4 1 Safety Safety 1.1 Safety precautions This manual contains basic instructions for the commissioning and operation of the HL 50 system. Therefore it is important to ensure that the manual is always available to the authorized and trained operator. The user needs to read the manual thoroughly. The manufacturer is not liable for damage to material or any injury of individuals due to non-observance of the instructions and safety advices provided by this manual. Local regulations have to be taken into consideration. 1.2 Labeling of safety instructions The following symbols may be present on the packaging material, on the instrument and in the manual: Symbol Description Caution (refer to accompanying manual for instructions)! Indicates a potential danger that may lead to slight or moderate injury. CAUTION The notes contain important information and useful tips for using the system. Failure to observe them can render the measurement results useless. 1.3 Check contents Check the contents of the package for completeness and visible damage after you receive it. In case of visible damage, the device must under no circumstances be taken into operation. If something is missing or damaged, please contact your local sales representative. 1.4 Working with products from SebaKMT It is important to observe national and regional laws and regulations of the country in which the device will be operated, as well as current company internal directives (work, operating and safety regulations). Use genuine accessories to ensure system safety and reliable operation. The use of other parts is not permitted and voids the warranty. 1.5 Repair and maintenance Repair and maintenance work has to be carried out by SebaKMT or authorized service partners (Vivax- Metrotech for US and Canada) using original spare parts only. The manufacturer recommends having the system tested and maintained at a service center once a year. 1.6 Special transportation requirements In general lithium containing batteries of any device are considered dangerous goods. The transport of devices which contain such batteries is subject to local regulations. Please inform yourself about local transportation requirements before shipping a device containing lithium batteries. Page 1 of 10

5 1 Safety 1.7 Safety instructions and warnings CAUTION The limits described under Technical Data may not be exceeded. Do not drop the device / the system s components or subject it / them to strong impacts or mechanical shocks. The device / system must be in a technically perfect condition for measurements of any kind. The indicated degree of protection can only be ensured if plugs or the provided protection caps are put in all sockets of the device. The plugs of the supplied connection cables are only compliant to the indicated degree of protection as long as they are plugged in. Plugs which are not connected or which are connected in a wrong way are not protected from water and dust ingress. Best advice: keep the instrument and components in a protective case while not in use. Page 2 of 10

6 2 Function and Design Function and Design 2.1 Function The Hydrolux HL 50 is an easy-to-use and handy device for acoustic leak detection. It comes with an integrated acoustic sensor. The pipe noise can be recorded via the probe tip, amplified, filtered (if needed) and put out via headphones. At the same time, the measured noise level is shown on the display of the device. During the measurement the operator can select three frequency filter settings. The probe tip can be removed so extension rods or other probes can be attached. Using the sensor socket, an external acoustic sensor can be connected to the HL 50, e.g. a ground microphone. Corded headphones can be used. 2.2 Design The following picture shows the probe tip, sensor and the connection sockets of the device. 10 4 Headphones Headphones 4.1 Wired headphones Via the audio socket (4) any wired headphones can be connected to the HL 50. The headphones are recognized automatically by the device when they are plugged in before turning on the device. The volume of the headphones can be adjusted via button and. Page 7 of 10

11 5 Power Supply Power Supply The device is comes with the following batteries:2 x 1.5 V AA LR6 Alternatively, rechargeable 1.2 V NiMH batteries can be used (min mah). When the battery level is low, a flashing battery symbol appears at the top of the display. Empty batteries can be replaced. For this purpose, loosen the screw at the backside of the device and remove the cover. Please pay attention to the correct polarity when inserting new batteries. Re-attach the cover and tighten the screw carefully. Don t overtighten! CAUTION Be cautious to not over tighten the screws to avoid damaging the components. Page 8 of 10

12 6 Operation Operation 6.1 Measurement using the probe tip When conducting a measurement with the internal sensor, the noise is recorded via the probe tip or another adapter (1). Any adapter can be removed. If needed, you can unscrew (right-hand thread) and replace it with another probe. You also can attach the supplied extension rod. 6.2 Measurement using an external sensor Via the 5-pole socket (3) at the bottom of the device, an external sensor can be connected to the HL 50, e.g. the universal microphone PAM B-2. (There are more sensors available. Page 5). When connecting an external sensor the HL 50 has to be switched off. The marks on the plug and socket show the correct line up. The plug needs to lock tangibly. When the HL 50 is switched on it recognizes the external sensor automatically. From that moment on the values of the external sensor are indicated on the display. After removing the external sensor, the HL 50 does not automatically switch back to the internal sensor. The device needs to be restarted for this purpose. Then the values of the internal sensor are shown in the display again. 6.3 Frequency filter By clicking the button the user can switch between the three frequency filter settings during the measurement: Designation Range Description LO Hz High frequencies are cut; (allows to listen to large leaks and greater distances) HI Hz Low frequencies are cut; (allows to listen to midsize and smaller leaks) ALL Hz Broadband measurement without filter Page 9 of 10

13 7 How to conduct a measurement How to take a measurement For best results we recommend the following procedure: Headphones Connect headphones to device without wearing them Switch the HL 50 on via I/O-button Set the volume to the lowest level via the button and put the headphones on Press the I/O-button in order to "mute" the headphones; the symbol appears in the display Set the frequency filter to "ALL" with the button. In order to conduct a measurement, press the I/O-button. The headphones are reactivated and the actual sound is audible. The level of the noise is shown on the display. Change the frequency filter if needed. Before every re-location click the mute button. This symbol indicates that the product should not be disposed of as normal household waste. As it is a B2B product, it may also not be disposed of at civic disposal centres. If you wish to dispose of this product, please do so properly by taking it to an organisation specialising in the disposal of old electrical equipment near you. Page 10 of 10
