2 Laser Safety The 2600 laser scanner complies with safety standard IEC (1993) for a Class I laser product. It also complies with U.S. 21CFR1040 as applicable to a Class IIa laser product. Avoid long term viewing of direct laser light. Optical The use of optical instruments with this product will increase eye hazard. Optical instruments include binoculars, microscopes and magnifying glasses but do not include eye glasses worn by the user. Radiant Energy The 2600 uses a low-power laser diode operating at 670nm in an opto-mechanical scanner resulting less than 0.6 mw peak output power. Laser light observed at 13cm (5.1 inches) above the window through a 7 mm (0.28 inches) aperture and averaged over 1000 seconds in less than 3.9µW PER CDRH Class IIa specification. Do not attempt to remove the protective housing of the scanner, as unscanned laser light with a peak output up to 0.8mW would be accessible inside. Laser Light Viewer The scanner window is the only aperture through which laser light may be observed on this product. A failure of the scanner motor, while the laser diode continues to emit a laser beam, may cause emission levels to exceed those for safe operation. The scanner has safeguards to prevent this occurrence. If, however, a stationary laser beam is emitted, the failing scanner should be disconnected from its power source immediately. Adjustments Do not attempt any adjustments or alteration of this product. Do not remove the protective housing of the scanner. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. CAUTION: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous laser light exposure.

7 1 Before You Install The Jarltech Series 2600 is a high performance, omidirectional, hands-free projection laser scanner designed for the point-of-sale. The Series 2600 is available in two versions. Model 2600K features an interface for communication with PC through IBM PC keyboard wedge and an RS485 interface for IBM 468x/469x POS system. Model 2600R features a dual interface for communication with host through RS232C and OCIA interface. Model 2600R also supports an auxiliary port for interfacing with an serial handheld scanner. The Series 2600 can be fixed either on a counter surface or an angle adjustable universal stand. With its programmable sleep mode, the scanner turns off automatically if it is not used within a period of time. The scanner can easily be waked up just by pressing either the switch on the top of the scanner or the switch on the universal stand. Step 1: Turn off your computer By shutting off your computer, you will prevent any accidental damage to the scanner and computer. 3

If you want to install scanner on the universal stand, turn to Chapter 3 for installation instructions. 4

9 2 Installing Scanner On Counter Surface This chapter describes the procedure for installing the scanner on a counter surface. Step 1: Turn off your computer If you have not already done so, turn off your computer to avoid any accidental damage to the scanner and computer. Step 2: Open the scanner Find out the small hole at the back cover of the scanner. Press it with the tip of a stick to remove the back cover of the scanner as illustrated in Diagram

10 Installing Scanner On Counter Surface Step 3: Connect cable adaptor to scanner Plug the 8 pin end of the supplied cable adaptor (P/N 53110) into the appropriate port of the scanner. Refer to Diagram 2.2. Diagram 2.2 Step 4: Mark sacnner mounting hole Use the back cover as a template to mark the places for the mounting holes at the counter surface and bore two holes. Thread the cable through the slit of cover, then using two screws to fasten the back cover to the surface as illustrated below:diagram 2.3 6

11 Installing Scanner On Counter Surface Step 5: Place the scanner Make sure the cables are placed properly as illustrated in the figure(diagram 2.4) to allow easy attachment of the scanner to the back cover. Press the scanner until a click is heard. Diagram 2.4 Step 6: Install communication cable Plug in the communication cable, one end to the DB25 connector of 2600 and another end to the host. (see Diagram 2.5) Diagram 2.5 7

12 Installing Scanner On Counter Surface NOTE: 1. If the host is an IBM 468x POS, the model 2600K with IBM RS485 interface should only be connected to port 17 of the host. 2. If the host is an IBM 469x POS, the model 2600K with IBM RS485 interface should only be connected to port 9E of the host. Step 7: Plug in power supply and turn on the host Start up your host. It should boot up normally. The scanner will activate with a beep indicating a successful installation. you may now test your scanner by scanning any bar code. Step 8: Go to Programming guide You are now ready to program the scanner to meet the specific requirements of your application environment. Please refer to the programming guide for custom programming. 8

13 3 Installing Scanner On Universal Stand This chapter describes the procedure for installing the scanner on the universal stand. To install the scanner on the universal stand, the cables should be led through the central hole of the stand to be connected to the scanner. The stand should be mounted on the counter surface first and then the scanner to the stand. Step 1: Turn off your computer If you have not already done so, turn off your computer to avoid any accidental damage to the scanner and your computer. Step 2: Mark stand mounting hole You are strongly recommanded to use two screws to mount the scanner on a counter face. If you prefer to mount the stand with two screws, on the counter top where the scanner is to be installed, mark the two places for the mounting holes. Refer to the figure for the relative position and the diameter (see Diagram 3.1). Do not mount the stand to the counter face yet. Diagram 3.1 9

14 Installing Scanner On Universal Stand Step 3: Open the scanner Press the small hole at the back cover of the scanner with the tip of a stick to remove the back cover as illustrated in Diagram 2.1. Step 4: Connect cable to scanner Plug the 8 pin end of the cable from the stand into the appropriate data port of the scanner. (see Diagram 3.2) Diagram 3.2 Step 5: Fasten the stand Use either two screws or the double sided tape to fasten the stand at the bottom of the plate. 10

15 Step 6: Place the scanner Installing Scanner On Universal Stand Place the scanner onto the universal stand and rotate the scanner as described in Diagram 3.3. Make sure that the connectors and cables are placed as indicated in the figures to allow easy attachment of the scanner to the back cover. Press the scanner until a click is heard. 17 4 Operating Your Scanner The Jarltech series 2600 projection laser scanner may be operated in conjunction with your host computer or terminal using either a keyboard wedge interface or an RS232 interface. Step 1: Connect scanner to computer Step 2: Scan a bar code label Simply by presenting the label of the products to the scanner as illustrated in Diagram 4.1. Diagram

18 Operation Your Scanner NOTE: Though 2600 uses a sapphire coating window, to ensure that the 2600 can have the best performance, please prevent from touching the scanning target to the scanner window which might cause some scratches and consequently lower the scanning performance. 14

19 5 Commands If you are using RS232C interface, the model 2600R can be controlled by host. Controlling can be accomplished by transmitting the following commands to the scanner. The default setting of the commands are as follows: Command Descriptionn 0E Hex (CTRL N or Shift Out) enable bar code reading (resumes disable) 0F Hex (CTRL O or Shift In) disable bar code reading 05 Hex (CTRL E or ENQ) Reset, re-initialization 12 Hex (CTRL R or DC2) sleep & stop motor 14 Hex (CTRL T or DC4) wake up (resumes sleep) When the scanner is disabled, the motor of the scanner will stay on until the scanner goes into sleep mode. 15

21 6 Maintenance And Troubleshooting This chapter describes how to maintain the scanner and how to solve problems that you may encounter when operating the scanner. Rare maintenance is necessary for the series 2600 scanner. Only an occasional cleaning of the scanner window is recommanded in order to remove dirt and fingerprints. The cleaning of the scanner window can be done during operation with a soft lint-free cloth and a non-abrasive glass spray cleaner. Series 2600 troubleshooting Situation The scanner is on but can not read bar codes. The LED is red. Solution The scanner window is dirty. Clean the scanner window as described in the Maintenance section. The presented bar-code type is not enabled. Select the bar-code type with the programming Guide. The scanner is disabled by the host. Refer to Chapter 5. The bar-code type you presented to the scanner is not supported by the The scanner is on, but the motor is not rotating. A bar code cannot be read. The LED is intermittently flashing red. The scanner has entered into the sleep mode. Press the switch on the top of the scanner to wake up the scanner (or use the wake protocol. Refer to Chapter 5.) 17

22 Maintenance And Troubleshooting Situation The LED is alternating red/green and beeps are heard. The LED remains green. The scanner does not accept more than two or three bar-codes. The LED is orange. A bar-code is read by the scanner but not accepted by the host system. Solution Possible failure of the scanning safeguard circuit. Disconnect the scanner from its power source immediately and contact your dealer. The scanner is continuously detecting a bar-code. Remove all bar-code labels out of the scan window of the scanner and try again. The scanner can not send the data to the host system. There is no proper handshaking between the scanner and the host. Make sure that all cables are connected and your host system is ready to receive data. There is no proper handshaking with the host system. Switch the host system on and check connection and communication settings. The laser is not functioning. The laser is either defect or switched off by the temperature protection circuit. Turn off the scanner for 5 minutes and try again. Make sure the scanner has enough air ventilation and is not placed in direct sunlight. The communication cable is not connected to the serial port of your host system. Refer to the manual of your host system to locate the serial port. The communication settings of the host and scanner do not match. Adjust the settings in order to be equal for both device. The communication cable does not suit your host system. Contact your dealer for the correct communication cable. The data format of the label is not supported by the software running on the host system. 18
