1 About this Manual This manual is a comprehensive guide that contains all of the information necessary to install and operate the Balluff BDD-100 Position Display. Please read this manual completely. For technical assistance, please contact: Balluff, Inc Holton Drive Florence, KY Description The Balluff BDD-100 is a 6-digit digital display, used in conjunction with the Balluff P1 RS-422 START/STOP linear transducer. The BDD-100 and the Balluff P1 linear transducer form a low-cost, easy to use system for displaying linear position. Easy to understand prompts make programming from the front panel fast and easy. Programming can also be done via the RS-232 port. Setting Parameters The following parameters can be set via the front panel: ITEM DESCRIPTION DEFAULT Units Selects either INCHES (English) or English MILLIMETERS(SI) as unit of measure Resolution Expressed as number of digits after the 2 decimal point Count direction Expressed as POSITU or NEGATU. POSITU POSITU means that the count increases as the magnet moves away from the connector end of the transducer Gradient This is the calibration factor unique to µsec/inch each transducer. This number is printed on the transducer label. Depending on the unit of measure, this value is expressed in either microseconds per inch or meters per second. Offset Expressed in units Zero Set Enable Enables and disables the front-panel ENAB zero capability Save Saves the current settings to EEPROM n/a Factory Restores factory defaults n/a End Returns to the RUN mode n/a 4

5 Step-by-Step Programming Step1: Connect transducer and power supply per figure 2. Upon power-up, the display should show firmware version for approximately 2 seconds and then go into RUN mode with the current position being displayed. Step 2: Press and hold the and buttons simultaneously for approximately 1.5 seconds. The display should indicate Step 3: With displayed, press. Press the button to toggle between (inches) and (millimeters). Press to accept the desired setting. Step 4: Press the button once. The display should indicate. Press. The current display resolution is displayed. Use the or button until the desired resolution is displayed. Press to accept the value. Step 5: Press the button once. The display should indicate. Press. The display indicates either or. Use the or buttons to select the desired count direction. Press to accept. Step 6: Press the button once. The display should indicate. Press. The display will indicate the current gradient with the first digit flashing. Use the button to change the value of the flashing digit. Use the button to move the flashing digit one place to the right. Repeat this procedure until the desired value is displayed. Press the button to accept the value. If the unit of measure selected in step 3 is, this value will be displayed in microseconds per inch. If unit of measure is, this value will be displayed in meters per second. Note: The gradient factor printed on the transducer lavel is in microseconds per inch. Step 7: Press the button once. The display should indicate. Press. The current offset will be displayed with the first digit flashing. Use the button to change the value of the flashing digit. Use the button to move the flashing digit one place to the right. Repeat this procedure until the desired value is displayed. Press the button to accept the value. Step 8: Press the button once. The display should indicate. Press. Use the button to toggle between and. If is selected, pressing and holding the for approximately 1.5 seconds while in RUN mode will cause the display to read This feature can be disabled by selecting. Step 9: Press the button once. The display should indicate. Pressing will save the current values to non-volatile memory. These settings will be retained even after power-down. Note: If this step is not performed, the above settings will remain in effect only as power is applied to the BDD-100. Step 10: Note: Only perform this step if all factory default settings need to be restored, otherwise, skip to Step 11. Press the button once. The display should indicate. Pressing will restore the BDD-100 to factory default settings. Step 11: Press the button once. The display should indicate. Press to return to RUN mode. The display should now be showing the current position, using the settings just programmed. 5

6 Special Functions Remote Zero Pin 8 on connector J1 can be used to perform a remote zero. Momentarily connecting pin 8 to GROUND (pin 2) will cause the display to read This function cannot be locked out with the ENAB 0 parameter. Front Panel Lockout Pin 7 on connector J1 can be used to lock-out the front panel. Connecting pin 7 to GROUND (pin 2) will disable the keypad. This feature could be used with a key-switch to prevent unauthorized or accidental changing of stored parameters. Error Indications The BDD-100 has two possible error indications: This indicates no response fromthe transducer. Possible causes are: No transducer connected Faulty or incorrectly wired interconnecting cable between the BDD-100 and the transducer Faulty transducer This indicates that the transducer is responding, but there is either no magnet or the magnet is outside the active sensing range of the transducer. 6

7 Serial Communications The BDD-100 incorporates an RS232 port for serial communications. The RS232 port can be used for programming any or all of the set-up parameters. The port can also be used to retrieve data fromthe BDD-100. Wire the BDD-100 serial communications port (J2) per the table below. 8 Commands All messages sent to the display must begin with the $ character and end with a carriage return. All responses from the display end with a carriage return. The following command messages are recognized.
