2 Purpose of this Manual This document is the NIM slot 5U CERN Compliant NIM Crate User's Manual; it contains information about the installation, the configuration and the use of the unit. (this obviously applies only to the boards marked "Made in Italy", we cannot attest to the manufacturing process of "third party" boards).

4 1. NIM8303 Overview The CAEN Mod. NIM8303 is a 5U Non ventilated NIM crate (19"-12 slot) available with both pluggable 300W and 600W power supplies. Safety features include: short circuit protection, Over / Undervoltage protection, Over temperature protection. The Unit is powered by 115 or 230 Vac, Hz. The Mod NIM8303 is equipped with a Control panel with mains switch, status LEDs, FAIL output (LEMO 00) and test pin for all DC voltages. Fig. 1: The Mod. 6 Front Panel Components Fig. 2: Mod. NIM8303 Front Panel Control Unit The Front Panel Control Unit includes the following sections: ±6V, ±12V, ±24V: each section includes one green LED that lights up as the relevant power supply is present and one 2mm banana connector which provides the relevant voltage, across a 1kOhm load (referred to the crate GND). 7 OVERLOAD LED: red LED that lights as one of the power supplies exceeds is current limit by more than 15%. ALARM: LEMO connector, provides an alarm signal (~100mA across a 100Ohm load, see figure), as an OVERHEAT/ OVERLOAD status is detected. 9 Monitor connector Power supply monitor connector is located on the N8360 and N8330 units; refer to p 11. Read thoroughly this section before starting any procedure of installation or operation of the product. Safety Terms and Symbols on the Product These terms may appear on the product: DANGER indicates an injury hazard immediately accessible as you read the marking. 10 Injury Precautions Review the following precautions to avoid injury and prevent damage to this product or any products connected to it. To avoid potential hazards, use the product only as specified. Only qualified personnel should perform service procedures. Caution The following safety precaution must be observed during all phases of operation, service and repair of this equipment. Failure to comply with the safety precautions or warnings in this document violates safety standards of design, manufacture and intended use of this equipment and may impair the built-in protections within. CAEN shall not be liable for user s failure to comply with these requirements. To avoid electric shock or fire hazard, do not apply a voltage to a load that is outside the range specified for that load. 11 Grounding This product is a Safety Class 1 instrument. To minimize shock hazard, the instrument chassis must be connected to an electrical ground. The instrument must be connected to the AC power supply mains through a three conductor power cable, with the ground wire firmly connected to an electrical ground (safety ground) at the power outlet. For instruments designed to be hard-wired to the supply mains, the protective earth terminal must be connected to the safety electrical ground before another connection is made. Any interruption of the protective ground conductor or disconnection of the protective earth terminal will cause a potential shock hazard that might cause personal injury. The power supply section houses two 2mm connectors: CHASSIS GND and CLEAN EARTH (A8360 and A8330 power supplies shown): A8360 A8330 Monitor conn. Monitor conn. Fig. 7: Grounding scheme CHASSIS GROUND: connected with internal PROTECTION EARTH and to Power Supply and Crate mechanics. CLEAN EARTH: connected to Backplane Connectors CLEAN EARTH Pins (see 0); it is independent from CHASSIS GROUND, unless they are purposely shortened. Input ratings Do not use AC supply, which exceeds the input voltage and frequency rating of this instrument. For input voltage and frequency rating of the module see 0. For safety reasons, the mains supply voltage fluctuations should not exceed above voltage range. Output connectors Output connectors deliver high energy; be careful to not short them, when cable connectors are not plugged, otherwise big sparks will occur. 11 NIM slot 5U CERN Compliant NIM Crate

12 Live circuits Operating personnel must not remove the instrument cover. No internal adjustment or component replacement is allowed by non-caen personnel. Never replace components with power cable connected. To avoid injuries, always disconnect power, discharge circuits and remove external voltage source before touching components (wait 15 min at least). Parts substitutions and modifications Always disconnect power, discharge circuits and remove external voltage source prior to fuse replacement (wait 15 min at least). Other parts substitutions and modifications are allowed by authorized CAEN service personnel only. Installation This Chapter contains instructions for initial inspection, preparation for use and repackaging for shipment. Preparation for use In order to be operational the unit must be connected to an appropriate AC source. The AC source voltage should be within the unit specification. Initial inspection Prior to shipment this unit was inspected and found free of mechanical or electrical defects. Upon unpacking of the unit, inspect for any damage, which may have occurred in transit. The inspection should confirm that there is no exterior damage to the unit such as broken knobs or connectors and that the front panel and meters face are not scratched or cracked. Keep all packing material until the inspection has been completed. If damage is detected, file a claim with carrier immediately and notify CAEN service. Rack mounting The Mod. NIM8303 is an equipment for BUILDING-IN: it must be ventilated and installed in a 19 equipment rack. Use the front panel rack-mount brackets to install the unit in the rack. It is necessary to provide the Mod. NIM8303 the proper ventilation; for this purpose, we suggest to use the Mod. A83xx 19" Rack mount 1U fan unit. Thanks to three ventilation fans able to provide a 450 m 3 /h air flow, it is a suitable yet cost effective solution to properly ventilate NIM modules operating in NIM bins that are not provided with a fan tray.
