1 1.Overview Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI) is a communication protocol for lighting control in buildings. The interface was first described in the IEC60929 standard for fluorescent lamp ballast, Annex E. The standard was subsequently updated to include other lighting devices, such as LED, HID, etc., to become IEC The complete standard for control interface of electronic control gears was published in June 2009, while the standard for lighting control devices is scheduled to be published in Only a pair of wires are required to form the bus for communication to all devices on a single DALI network. Each piece of operating equiment with a DALI interface can be communicated with individually. Using a bidirectional data exchange, a DALI controller can query and set the status of each connected lighting device. As a standalone system, DALI can be operated with a maximum of 64 devices. System : Brightness control within large open - plan office, lecture halls or conference rooms. DALI can provide zoned or localised control of lighting. Control could be offered through infrared remote control or a software control with GUI support, or used together as an easy configuration tool to group loads together. 2 2.General information 2.1 This software enables you to: Have 4 steps to a good install Addressing and management system for up to 64 DALI units Easily create and edit individual light scene Easily create and edit individual light group Define fade time for each light scenes Define fade rate for dimming up and down Set the basic brightness Save and load DALI address in a file Run the software on Windows XP or windows Technical data DALI Link Communication: USB 2.0, no driver needed Power supply via USB : 5 VDC <20 ma 3LEDs indicate state The max. permissible length of the DALI control line is 300 m 2 x 1.5 mm² Outputs: 1 x DALI port The DALI output is compliant with the DALI standard. 3 3.Getting started The DALI Workbench software is designed to provide the controls device the facility to send DALI commands to the connected control gear. Installation is only to be performed once, using the file: DALI Workbench.msi The following figures step through the DALI Workbench tool installation process. 5 Figure 6 Screenshots of DALI Workbench 4.How the DALI Workbench software is organized 4.1 Connecting the DALI Link Once the recommended hardware setup has been completed, DALI Link can be used. Figure 7 shows how to connect to the DALI Workbench. Clicking on Connect initiates connection to DALI Workbench Clicking on Disconnect initiates disconnection from DALI Workbench Figure Four steps to correct installation 4.2.1Step 1: Test Installation 5

6 This step checks that the wiring is correct for the installation.after the test has been started the DALI commands Recall min.level and Recall max. Level are sent alternately to all the devices in the DALI circuit, causing the connected devices to flash. This test determines whether communication is working properly in the DALI circuit and whether all the devices in the DALI circuit are connected Step 2: Finding devices There are two ways of searching for new devices on the DALI circuit. Install new( system expansion): A search is carried out for devices that have already been addressed and devices that have not yet been addressed (i.e. devices that have been added). The devices that have already been addressed remain unchanged, and the new devices found are assigned to the next free DALI addresses. IMPORTANT: If the system is being expanded the new devices that are added to the system must not already have a DALI address otherwise there may be problems with duplicated addresses. All new installation: The short addresses in all the DALI devices in the DALI circuit are deleted and then the devices are readdressed. Start the Addressing Wizard Search the DALI circuit for devices already addressed 6

8 4.2.3 Step 3: Changing addresses In step 3 you can change the randomly assigned addresses to suit the installation plan. Highlight the device to be given a new address, change the address in the field Change address and apply the change by clicking on the Yes button. NOTE: To change an address there must be at least one address free on the DALI circuit(maximum of 63 addresses used) Step 4: Delete addresses Delete selected address : Deletes the selected short address. Delete all addresses : Deletes all short addresses. 8

10 5.2 Light control and status functions Configuration commands are used to set the global parameters for the DALI devices. Light level : Changes the current brightness value between the minimum and maximum values. available to read or set up light level by R/W button also. Up : Increases the light value by the dimming steps defined in the fade rate. Down : Reduces the light value by the dimming steps defined in the fade rate. Step up : Increases the light value by one step. Step down : Reduces the light value by one step. ON / step up : Switches the light to the Minimum Level if the device was already off. If the device is on, the light value is increased by one step. Step down / OFF : Reduces the light value by one step. If the device is at Minimum Level it is switched off. Scene recall : Calls up lighting scene x. Status : Current status values of the DALI device. Blink sequence : Flashing sequence area. 10

11 5.3 Parameters and configuration panel Paramters: Extended information for the DALI device ( device type, production date,...) Configuration : Configuration commands are used to set the global parameters for the DALI devices. Power on level: The Power ON Level corresponds to the light value that the DALI devices adopt when the lighting system is powered up. System failure level : The System Failure Level corresponds to the light value that the DALI devices adopt when a bus fault occurs. Min level : Changes the minimum dimming value. The brightness value cannot go below this value. Max level : Changes the maximum dimming value. The brightness value cannot exceed this value. Fade rate : The fade rate is used in connection with the DALI commands up and down. It indicates by how many dimming steps the light value is changed. Fade time : The fade time is the time in seconds that is needed to reach a particular brightness value. NOTE: Changes to the configuration parameters lead to changed behaviour of the lighting system. Care must be taken when changing configuration parameters, especially with components of safety and emergency lighting. 11

12 5.4 Groups area In the Groups area is shown in BLUE to which of the 16 DALI groups the selected participant is assigned to. Clicking on a group field on the display assigns or removes the selected participant to or from the group. The group configuration is transmitted by save button. 5.5 Scene programming Each of the 16 DALI scenes is displayed on its own line in the general section of the device configuration. Selects the scene for selected device to be set or removed(mask). To set the scene level, user can enter desired scene level in the level field provided. Save button : the scene light value stored in the selected participant. Read button : Reads out the scene light value stored in the selected participant. 12
