14 1 Introduction to the Sylantro Communications System Understanding the Adapter The Sylantro adapter must be installed at the client site to enable service for analog and digital phones. The Sylantro adapter, installed at the customer site, converts voice traffic into IP packets for transmission to the carrier network. The Sylantro adapter turns your telephone into the ultimate thin client allowing the delivery of advanced applications to your telephone. The Sylantro adapter provides the following features to ensure the highest voice quality possible over an IP network: G.711 CODEC, which converts analog voice traffic from the connected telephones to IP packets and incoming IP packets from a media gateway or another adapter back to analog voice traffic. Jitter buffers The network can inflict a packet-by-packet time delay, which may be different for each packet. Jitter buffers deliberately delay incoming IP packets in order to create a fixed spacing, and also fix any out-of-order errors of the packets by looking at the sequence number in the RTP frames and reassembling the voice stream in the correct order. Echo cancellation Echo is the reflection back to the sender of a telephone call. This echo is eliminated by signal processors called echo cancellers. They sample the transmission and echo signal and insert an out-of-phase cancellation signal into the return channel, thus eliminating echo. 1-4 Sylantro 24-Port Adapter Installation Guide

36 3 Installing the 24-Port Adapter Configuring the Adapter Caution: Do not connect the adapter to the network until you have completed configuring the adapter address as described in this section. Using a Telephone to Configure an Adapter To configure the adapter using a telephone, you must first connect a telephone to any port on the adapter and enter a series of numbers. The adapter can then communicate with the Control Server and obtain its configuration. To configure the IP address using a telephone, follow these steps: 1. Connect an analog or digital telephone to any port on the adapter through the punch-down block. On a digital telephone with a display, the display prompts you through the configuration process. When you first connect a digital display phone, the display phone shows WELCOME TO SYLANTRO SYSTEMS. You connect an analog telephone to an analog adapter, and a digital telephone to a digital adapter. 2. With the adapter powered on, lift the handset or press Spkr to go off hook and listen to the telephone, you should hear a fast busy tone. Note: Enter digits slowly so they are properly shown on the display. 3. On the telephone, enter the following password: * # * # 1 * 2 * 3. The display shows only * s as you enter the password. You will hear a stutter dial tone to confirm that you have entered the configuration mode and the display shows CFG MAIN MENU Sylantro 24-Port Adapter Installation Guide

40 3 Installing the 24-Port Adapter Table 3-4 Command ip-tos save Description of Configuration Commands (Continued) Description IP Type of Service represents an 8-bit field in the IP header that allows the network to prioritize IP traffic based on the value of this field. The recommended setting is 188 decimal ( binary), based on each of the six fields described below. The 8-bits are ordered 0 7 and are composed of the following parts: Precedence (bits 0,1,2). Valid values include the following: Network Control Internetwork Control CRITIC/ECP Flash Override Flash Immediate Priority Routine For realtime voice communications the maximum application setting of 101 (5 decimal) is recommended. Levels 6 and 7 are normally reserved for network equipment only. Delay (bit 3). Valid values are: 0 (normal delay) and 1 (low delay). Recommended setting is 1. Throughput (bit 4). Valid values are 0 (normal throughput) and 1 (high throughput). Recommended setting is 1. Reliability (bit 5). Valid values are 0 (normal reliability) and 1 (high reliability). Recommended setting is 1. Reserved (bits 6 and 7). These bits must be set to 0. Saves the configuration you just entered. 5. Unplug the adapter Sylantro 24-Port Adapter Installation Guide

41 AC Power ETHERNET RS-232 Installing the 24-Port Adapter 3 Making the Network Connections The adapter should be connected directly to the first Ethernet switch or router that is connected to the incoming broadband IP connection from the service provider. After the incoming line is terminated in the customer s wiring closet, a connection is made from the termination box to a device that converts the incoming line to 10/100-BaseT Ethernet. The 10/100-BaseT line is then connected to an Ethernet switch. The data subnet and the voice subnet (adapter) are then connected to the switch. This configuration allows both data and voice traffic to pass to the service provider network using a single physical line. The network connections are made using Category 5 cables. To connect the adapter to an Ethernet switch, connect one end of a Category 5 cable to an open port on the Ethernet switch, and the other end to the Ethernet port on the back of the adapter as shown in Figure 3-5. Ethernet switch Data network Incoming network termination DIGITAL PORTS 9-16 DIGITAL PORTS DIGITAL PORTS 1-8 Adapter-front Adapter-back Integrated access device adapter_net_connect Figure 3-5 Connecting the Adapter to an Ethernet Switch This configuration applies to any incoming broadband connection such as a DSL line or T1/E1 line from the service provider. The network connection provided by the service provider should have sufficient bandwidth to support the customer data and voice requirements. Sylantro 24-Port Adapter Installation Guide 3-15

42 3 Installing the 24-Port Adapter When adapters are connected to a DSL network, the incoming DSL line is connected directly to a DSL modem. A connection is then made from the DSL modem to an Ethernet switch using a Category 5 cable. In some cases, the DSL modem can contain an internal hub; in this case, the adapter should be connected directly to one of the hub ports within the DSL modem. Note: Make sure the service provider network connection is already installed and verified before the adapter is installed. Table 3-5 shows the signals for the Ethernet port connector on the adapter. Table 3-5 Ethernet Port Signals Pin Signal Direction Description 1 TxD+ Transmit data + 2 TxD- Transmit data - 3 RxD+ Receive data + 4 None No connection 5 None No connection 6 RxD- Receive data - 7 None No connection 8 None No connection Completing the Installation Plug the adapter back into the power source. After all of the configuration numbers are entered, the network connection is made, and the adapter is powered on, the adapter connects to the Control Server and obtains its configuration information. You can monitor the status LEDs on the front of the chassis to determine if a connection is made, see Table 1-2 on page 1-8. If the LEDs do not indicate that a connection is established with the Control Server, see the troubleshooting information in Chapter 4, Verifying and Troubleshooting the 24-Port Adapter Installation Sylantro 24-Port Adapter Installation Guide

43 Installing the 24-Port Adapter 3 Another way to confirm that the adapter is properly configured is to go off hook on port 1, if the addresses are accepted, you hear normal dial tone. If they are not accepted, you hear a fast busy tone. If you hear a fast busy tone, verify the numbers given to you by the service provider and repeat Using a Telephone to Configure an Adapter on page To complete the installation, you must connect each of the customer telephones to the front of the punch-down block. It is important that the person responsible for configuring the customer services knows which physical telephone connects to which port. Assigning Extensions to Phones After you have installed and configured the 24-port adapter and connected the phones, the last step is to assign an extension number to each phone. Usually, the office administrator at the customer site is responsible for doing this task. You can assign an extension number using one of the phones you just connected, or you can use the Management Portal. For information on assigning extension numbers to adapter ports using the Management Portal, refer to the Sylantro Communications Management Portal User s Guide. To assign extension numbers to telephones directly on each phone, follow these steps: 1. Go to the first telephone that you want to assign to an extension number, and go off hook (that is, lift the receiver or press the Spkr button). 2. Enter the following numeric series: *51, tenant reg code, registration password, extension number. For example, * where 1111 is the tenant reg code, 2222 is the registration password, and 2351 is the extension number you are assigning. The tenant reg code and registration password are initially supplied by your service provider. If you do not know these numbers, contact your service provider or use the Management Portal to assign extension numbers as described in the Sylantro Communications Management Portal User s Guide. Repeat these steps for each telephone that you want to assign an extension to. Sylantro 24-Port Adapter Installation Guide 3-17
