CGeneral Information 1.1 gprinciple of Operation The 0IIR-FRE 0II 0Smart 0Sensor 0is 0a 0microprocessor 0controlled 0FRE 0gas 0Sensor 0or Transmitter using infrared sensing technology. The concentration of Freon is measured by determining the amount of absorption of light in a specific frequency band. As 0most 0gases 0have 0their 0characteristic 0spectra 0in 0the 0infrared. 0Those 0spectra 0derive 0from the 0molecule's 0composition 0in 0such 0a 0way 0that 0no 0two 0molecular 0gases 0have 0the 0same 0IR spectrum. 0IR 0spectra 0are 0the 0fingerprints 0of 0gases, 0and 0thus 0allow 0gases 0to 0be 0uniquely identified. By 0transmitting 0a 0beam 0of 0IR 0radiation 0through 0the 0air, 0or 0through 0any 0particular 0gas volume, and recording how much is transmitted at selected spectral lines, one may decide which 0gases 0are 0present 0and 0how 0much 0of 0each. 0This 0is 0a 0standard 0and 0well-proven principle, 0routinely 0used 0in 0laboratory 0analyses 0of 0chemical 0species, 0and 0is 0also 0the 0basis on which our sensors are made. An 0IR 0detector 0is 0essentially 0a 0temperature 0sensor 0and 0is, 0therefore, 0potentially 0very sensitive 0to 0changes 0in 0the 0ambient 0temperature. 0However, 0our 0IIR-Freon 0II 0smart 0sensor modules 0do 0it 0better, 0faster, 0and 0more 0precisely. 0The 0IIR-FRE 0II 0smart 0sensors 0are entirely electronic with no moving parts, and are built around our unique QT Gas Sample Cell with constant temperature control integrated with IR Source and IR Detector together. This makes our IR smart sensors work from -45 C to 65 C without being susceptible to ambient temperature fluctuations. IIR-FREO N II O p e r a t i o n Ma nua l 2

6 2. Installation 2.1 Sensor Location Several factors should be considered when selecting locations to install sensors. The following general suggestions should be considered to assure the detection of the target gas. Select the most suitable location for each sensor. 1. Air Currents: If there are fans, winds, or others sources of air movement, gases may tend to rise or collect in certain areas of a facility. The local air currents should be assessed to aid in selecting the sensor location. In outdoor situations considerations such as prevailing winds should be accounted for. Air convection can often be more important in determining gas concentrated areas than factors of Vapor Density. 2. Vapor Density: R11, R22, R123 and R134a are heaver than air. Detecting location should be 9-18 inch (0.23m to 0.46m) above the floor. 3. Gas Emission Sources: As a rule, at least one sensor should be located in close proximity to each point where a leak is likely to occur. This is particularly important when a liquid having a low volatility is monitored. 4. Environmental Factors: Designed to rugged outdoor use consider the following in selecting locations. Install sensors where they will be protected from wind, dust, snow, water, vibration and shock. 2.2 Physical Dimensions IIR-FREO N II O p e r a t i o n Ma nua l Rev A

9 2.4.3 Wire and Cable The terminal block plug TB1 accepts 12 AWG to 24 AWG wire, Use 16 AWG or 18 AWG wire for Power Supply in long wiring runs, which can be up to 1km (1,000 meters) long. We recommend using BELDEN 9841 for communications. This wire has 120 ohm input impendence, which will eliminate RS-485 communication problems Digital Connection RS-485 Terminator The terminator on each end of the RS485 loop is designed to match the electrical impedance characteristic of the twisted pair loop, and will prevent signal echoes from corrupting the data on the line. The terminator should be enabled on BOTH ends of the RS485 loop. Short and medium length modbus/485 loops can operate without the terminating resistor. Longer runs may require the terminating resistors. But adding terminator dramatically increases power consumption. IIR-FREO N II O p e r a t i o n Ma nua l Rev A
10 Factory default setting is disabled terminator. The IIR-FRE II smart sensor supplies this resistor on the main board, and it is chosen using a jumper at J6. 12 3. CFunction and Configuration 3.1 giir-freon Working Mode IIR-FRE II has four kinds of working mode: Warm-up Mode: It allows IIR-FRE II to heat up Optical Block and initialize components Monitoring Mode: SW1 position 6 is switched OFF. It allows IIR-FRE II to measure the gas concentration and output signals. Calibrate ma Mode: SW1 position 6 is switched It allows IIR-FRE II to calibrate 4mA and 20 ma outputs. Adjust ma Mode: A key is pressed and hold when in Calibrate ma Mode It allows IIR-FRE II to adjust 4mA and 20 ma outputs. 3.2 gsystem Initialization When the IIR-FRE II smart sensor is turned on, it initializes hardware and software. Normally, it takes 5 minutes during the warming-up procedure. After 0warming-up 0procedure, 0the 0transmitter 0automatically 0starts 0testing 0for 0errors. 0If there are no errors, the Status LED is turned constantly. If there is an error, the Status LED 0blinks 0once 0every 0second 0and 0the 04-20mA 0analog 0outputs 02.5mA. 0An 0error 0message will display on the M-Controller or Q4 Controller panel. NOTE: 1If 1the 1Status 1LED 1blinks 1twice 1every 1second, 1check 1SW1 1position 16, 1make sure the position 6 is switched OFF, which makes the IIR-FRE II work in Normal Monitoring Mode, rather than in Cal ma Mode. When the transmitter is powered up, the IR Source LED on Lamp Board blinks all the time. If the IR Source LED is always or OFF, that means the IR Source in the optical block has problem or the driver for the IR Source has problem. Refer to Section 5: Troubleshooting for IR Source. 13 Keys IIR FREO N II O p e r a t i o n And Ma i nt e na nce Ma nua l 3.3 g and Pots IIR-FRE II has two keys and two pots on main board. Key SW3 is named Zeroing CAL, CAL 4mA and - Key SW2 is named Span CAL, CAL 20mA and + Pot W1 is named ZERO POT Port W2 is named CAL POT The two keys perform different functions in different working mode: In Monitoring Mode: The two keys are used as Zeroing CAL and Span CAL. o When key Zeroing CAL is pressed, it will perform zeroing calibration. o When key Span CAL is pressed, it will perform span calibration. In CAL ma Mode: The two keys are used to calibrate 4mA and 20mA output. o When key CAL 4mA is pressed, it will output 4mA or 2VDC. o When key CAL 20mA is pressed, it will output 20mA or 10VDC. o When key CAL 4mA is pressed and held for 3 seconds, it will enter Adjust 4mA Mode. o When key CAL 20mA is pressed and held for 3 seconds, it will enter Adjust 20mA Mode. In Adjust ma Mode: The two keys are used to adjust 4mA and 20mA output. o When key - is pressed, it will decrease the output signal. o When key + is pressed, it will increase the output signal. In Warm-up Mode: The two keys cannot be used as Zeroing CAL and Span CAL, but they can be used for calibrating 4-20mA output. The two pots are used to adjust zeroing gain and calibration gain when the unit is in the factory calibration procedure. Do not attempt to modify or adjust the two pots in the field.
