7 SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION 1-1 GENERAL This technical manual provides installation and operation information for the Diagnostic/Control Kit. This technical manual contains only the information that is applicable to the Diagnostic/ Control Kit. Other information about the Model 64, Buffered VLDS, or VLDS systems is in the specific manuals supplied with these systems. It is assumed that the user is familiar with the Model 64, Buffered VLDS, or VLDS system that is to be used with the Diagnostic/Control Kit, and with the operation of a personal computer. NOTE Unless otherwise noted, information in this manual is applicable to Model 64, Buffered VLDS, and standard VLDS systems. As used in this manual, the word "unit" denotes all configurations of all of these systems. 1-2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION DIAGNOSTIC/CONTROL KIT The Diagnostic/Control Kit is intended to provide local control of a Model 64, Buffered VLDS, or standard VLDS system from a personal computer regardless of the normal mode of control TYPOGRAPHICAL CONVENTIONS Throughout this manual certain typographical conventions have been followed to illustrate computer interaction. The items that the user will type are shown in bold, capital letters (for example; TYPE THIS). Function keys and other specific keys strokes will be enclosed in brackets (for example; [Enter], [F1], and [Esc]. 1-3 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT The user must provide an IBM PC or compatible personal computer with the following characteristics: Windows 95/98/NT/2000 operating system One uncommitted peripheral expansion slot for the interface module CCA 1-4 EQUIPMENT SUPPLIED NOTE Depending upon your unit's system software/firmware configuration/revision and the diagnostic/ control software revision, there may be commands/items in the diagnostic software that may not execute on your specific unit. The Diagnostic/Control Kit contains the items shown in Table 1-1. PART NUMBER Table 1-1. 9 SECTION 2 INSTALLATION 2-1 GENERAL This section contains the installation and setup procedures for the components of the Diagnostic/Control Kit. CAUTION This equipment contains ESDS devices. Proper ESDS device handling procedures must be followed. Refer to the ESDS DEVICE HANDLING information at the front of this manual. 2-2 UNPACKING Removal of the components of the Diagnostic/ Control Kit from the shipping carton requires no special instructions, except to exercise normal care. 2-3 CLAIMS After unpacking, carefully inspect the components of the Diagnostic/Control Kit for visible evidence of shipping damage. If damage is found, immediately notify the carrier, initiate a claim procedure, and notify your Sypris Data Systems representative. 2-4 SETUP DIAGNOSTIC PERSONALITY CCA When removing the Diagnostic Personality CCA from its protective antistatic bag, be sure to follow proper ESD procedures. Diagnostic Personality CCA component locations are shown in Figure 2-1. A crystal with a frequency exactly eight times the per channel byte data rate must be installed in socket U44 on the Diagnostic Personality CCA. The per channel byte data rate at time of manufacture is printed on the system unit identification label. For Buffered VLDS and Model 64 units, the crystal frequency should be exactly eight times the desired data rate providing the data rate is the streaming rate. If the control cables remain connected on the rear panel of the system unit, jumpers J5 through J20 must be removed from the Diagnostic Personality CCA. If the control cables are disconnected, leave the jumpers in place. Two methods of unit control are available when using the Diagnostic/Control Kit; host computer or thumbwheel switches. The method of control is selected by jumper J4 on the Diagnostic Personality CCA. See Table 2-1. Table 2-1. Jumper J4 Control Selection POSITION 1-to-2 2-to-3 SELECTION Control is via a host computer connected to P3 on the Diagnostic Personality CCA. Control is via thumbwheel switches on the Diagnostic Personality CCA METRABYTE P1024 DIGITAL INTERFACE CCA When removing the Metrabyte P1024 Digital Interface CCA from its protective antistatic bag, be sure to follow proper ESD procedures. The base address for the Metrabyte P1024 Digital Interface CCA must be set for an unused address. Set the base address as follows: DIAGNOSTIC/CONTROL INSTALLATION 07/03 2-1

This may require removing any plug-in cards and comparing jumper and switch settings to the associated manuals. b. Set the BASE ADDRESS switch on the MetraByte P1024 Digital Interface CCA to an unused address (refer to Figure 2-2). Use address if possible, as this will simplify use of the program /03 DIAGNOSTIC/CONTROL INSTALLATION

11 Figure 2-2. Digital Interface Base Address Selection c. Leave the INTERRUPT jumper in the X position (disabled). 2-5 INSTALLATION DIAGNOSTIC PERSONALITY CCA a. Set the system unit power switch to OFF and disconnect the unit from facility power. b. Remove the system unit top cover. c. Following proper ESD precautions, remove the personality CCA from slot A1A8 (slot nearest the back of the system unit, refer to Figure 2-3). Pull the personality CCA from its slot using the extractors. Place the personality CCA in a protective antistatic bag. NOTE If it is not desirable to disconnect the control cables from the rear panel of the system unit, jumpers J5 through J20 must be removed on the Diagnostic Personality CCA. Therefore, perform either Step d or Step f. d. Disconnect all data and control cables from the rear panel of the system unit. e. Following proper ESD precautions, remove the Diagnostic Personality CCA from its protective antistatic bag. NOTE Either Step d or Step f must be performed. f. If installed, remove jumpers J5 through J20 from the Diagnostic Personality CCA. g. Verify that the Diagnostic Personality CCA has a crystal installed in socket U44. For standard systems, the frequency of the crystal should be exactly eight times the per channel byte data rate. Buffered VLDS and Model 64 systems should be in the streaming mode, and the frequency of the crystal should be DIAGNOSTIC/CONTROL INSTALLATION 07/03 2-3

Carefully install the Diagnostic Personality CCA in the personality slot (refer to Figure 2-3). Make certain that the Diagnostic Personality CCA is fully seated in the backplane connector METRABYTE P1024 DIGITAL INTERFACE CCA a. With the computer power off, remove the top cover from the computer system. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for details and precautions. NOTE Computer systems with 16-bit microprocessors may have peripheral expansion slots with both single and dual connectors. The Metrabyte P1024 Digital Interface CCA may be installed in either a single or dual connector slot. b. Select an unused computer peripheral expansion slot. Remove the rear panel slot cover. Save hardware removed for use when the circuit cards are removed. c. Install the Metrabyte P1024 Digital Interface CCA in the selected slot. Secure in place with the screw removed from the rear panel slot cover. d. Replace the top cover on the host computer METRABYTE TO DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTION CABLE a. Connect the 37-pin end of the Metrabyte to Diagnostic Connection Cable to the connector on the Metrabyte P1024 Digital Interface CCA. The connector is accessible at the rear of the host computer /03 DIAGNOSTIC/CONTROL INSTALLATION

13 b. Connect the 25-pin end of the Metrabyte to Diagnostic Connection Cable to interface connector J3 on the Diagnostic Personality CCA. 2-6 PACKING CAUTION Diagnostic/Control Kit components are subject to damage from electrostatic discharge. Follow the ESDS HANDLING instructions at the front of this manual to ensure proper handling and transportation of ESDS (electrostatic discharge sensitive) components. If any of the Diagnostic/Control Kit components are to be shipped and the original container is not available, pack them as follows: NOTE This procedure conforms with the regulations and specifications of most carriers. However, prior to packing, check with the intended carrier. a. Enclose the component in an ESD protective plastic bag or sheet to prevent packing and materials from entering. b. Place the component in a heavy-duty corrugated cardboard carton having approximately the same inner dimensions as the outer dimensions of the component. c. Pack dunnage on all sides of the component so that all open spaces are filled and tightly packed. d. Seal the inner carton and place it in an extra strength outer carton or wooden crate. The outer carton must be large enough to allow a minimum of two inches for dunnage on all sides of the inner carton. e. Be sure the dunnage is packed tightly and that no empty spaces remain. f. Seal the outer carton, then mark it FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP to designate the normal operating position of the component. 2-7 SHIPPING The method of shipment is selected by the shipper. Address properly packed items to: Sypris Data Systems, Inc S. Revere Pkwy Centennial, CO Mark repair/exchange items, Attn: REPAIR/ EXCHANGE. A shipping label listing Sypris Data Systems address is included with all repair/ exchange items shipped from the factory. If available, use this label to return repair/exchange items. 17 SECTION 4 PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION 4-1 GENERAL This section contains a brief functional description of the Remote Diagnostic/Control Kit. This functional description is referenced to the block diagram shown in Figure PURPOSES DIAGNOSTIC PERSONALITY CCA The Diagnostic Personality CCA (circuit card assembly) provides a means of controlling the VLDS and a method of verifying the VLDS, Buffered VLDS, or Mod 64 system data path integrity. It furnishes the required user reference clock (CLKIN) to the system so that no external source is required. It also provides known data patterns for input to the system unit. Control of the system unit can be accomplished manually through switches on the Diagnostic Personality CCA, through the control port connector on the Diagnostic Personality CCA, or through the control port connector on the back of the system unit. Control using the Diagnostic Personality CCA connector is identical to the standard system unit control interface and can be used to bypass other interfaces. In addition, the Diagnostic Personality CCA provides test connections for the Direct Channel METRABYTE PI024 DIGITAL INTERFACE MODULE CCA The Metrabyte PI024 Digital Interface Module CCA provides a means of interfacing an IBM-compatible personal computer to the Diagnostic Personality CCA. With this interface, it is possible to control the operation of the system unit and to monitor its operation with the personal computer. A computer program to assist in the control and monitoring of the system unit using the personal computer is provided on the Diagnostic/Control Software Diskette. Figure 4-1. 18 4-3 DATA PATH The normal data path is interrupted by the Diagnostic Personality CCA. When RECORD is selected, the Diagnostic Personality CCA sends data to the unit in either a RANDOM, FIXED, INCREMENT, or A5 data pattern as selected by jumpers J21 and J22. The same data pattern used to make a recording should be selected for reproduction. The jumper positions for pattern selection are shown in Table 4-1. Table 4-1 Pattern Selection PATTERN S1 S2 JUMPER J21 POSITION JUMPER J22 POSITION Random - Press Fixed Press Press Increment - Press A5 - Press When using the "FIXED" pattern, LOAD button S1 on the Diagnostic Personality CCA must be pressed after pressing S2 and just before issuing the record command. Reproduce operation must begin at the same principle block as which the original recording was started. Also, LOAD button S1 must be pressed just prior to the reproduce operation. If the improper started principle block is selected, the data error indications are meaningless. 4-4 ERROR INDICATORS During reproduction, data coming from the system unit is compared to the pattern selected by jumpers J21 and J22. Any difference detected between the reproduced pattern and the generated pattern is indicated on the error LED's and the byte error displays (7-segment). The yellow LED's flash each time an error occurs. The red LED's light when an error occurs and remain on until cleared. The errors are counted and displayed on the byte error displays. The red LED's next to the byte error displays are overflow indicators. All error indicators are cleared only when CLEAR button S3 is pushed. LED's DS1 and DS2 monitor channel 1. LED's DS3 and DS4 monitor channel 2. On a single-channel unit, error information for channel 2 is invalid. 4-5 DIRECT CHANNEL DATA PATH BNC connectors J1 and J2 can be used to record and reproduce on the direct channel. Connector J2 allows data to be fed into the unit with direct channel record active. Connector J1 brings the direct channel data reproduced out of the unit with direct channel reproduce active. The normal direct channel input signal is 1 Vrms into a 600 ohm input impedance (maximum is 10 Vrms). When a 1 Vrms signal is reproduced, the normal output level is 1 Vrms (+3 db, -5 db, 100 Hz to 300 Hz) (±3 db, 300 Hz to 10 KHz) into an output impedance of 600 ohms. The direct channel bandwidth is 100 Hz to 10 KHz. When RANDOM, INCREMENT, or A5 pattern reproductions are selected, the reproduction may start anywhere in the recorded block /03 DIAGNOSTIC/CONTROL OPERATION

To initiate a service call, contact Sypris at and give the customer service manager the following information: Name Site location Equipment description by model number and serial number Description of problem Name, telephone, and of primary contact person A field engineer will return your call to confirm and estimated on-site arrival time. Factory Service Factory service is available at the Sypris Data Systems corporate headquarters for products which do not require immediate on-site service. For information call A customer service manager can provide current diagnostic fees and labor rates for your equipment. You will also receive instructions on shipping your equipment to Sypris. Specific cost estimates cannot be provided without a diagnostic evaluation to determine the condition of your equipment. You must deliver or ship your equipment to Sypris for this evaluation, for which you will be billed a diagnostic charge. After the condition of your equipment is determined, a service technician will contact you with a cost quote for the required service and an estimated completion date. *This includes products manufactured by Honeywell Test Instruments Division, Metrum, or Metrum-Datatape. 20 Technical Support Factory trained technicians, experts on your specific equipment, are available to help you resolve equipment problems by telephone and . Call Sypris at and ask for Technical Support. The Customer service manager will ask for your name, telephone, address, and the model and serial number of your equipment, and then, direct your call to a technician who is highly specialized with your equipment. If the technician is not immediately available to assist you, your call will be returned in a timely manner. Spare Parts and Repair/Exchange Parts Call when you need to order spare or repair/exchange parts. The Customer Service Manager will direct your call to the appropriate parts specialist. To Add/Delete Equipment on Service Contract Periodically, it may be necessary to add or delete equipment to your on-site service contract.
