Ongoing EPRI Plant Modernization and Configuration Management Initiatives Presented by Cristian Marciulescu Principal Technical Leader CMBG Conference Chattanooga, TN June 26, 2018
Summary Overall Plant Modernization Effort Specific I&C Research areas for existing fleet Automated Chemistry and Use of Indoor Positioning System Initiatives Configuration Management and Plant Information Turnover Project 2
EPRI Born in a Blackout Independent, nonprofit center for collaborative, public interest energy and environmental research International membership funds ~25% of EPRI research 45% for nuclear sector EPRI programs engage ~80% of nuclear operators worldwide New York City The Great Northeast Blackout, 1965 EPRI members EPRI members generate > 90% of the electricity in the U.S. 100% of U.S. nuclear electricity 3
Plant Modernization Initiative Achieve economic viability through radical and timely innovation for the existing operating reactors Help reduce O&M costs aggressively which will enable achieving local market competitiveness New modernization / transformation research efforts Common enablers (wireless infrastructure and common digital processes) can be applied to help Use demonstration tasks to assess the feasibility of the proposed methods/technologies Collect lessons learned and develop business cases tied to specific savings 4

Instrumentation and Controls Utilize advanced instrumentation, controls, information & communication technology to improve safety and reduce costs in nuclear power plants The Economic viability of nuclear power plants around the world is being challenged The goal is to help reduce O&M costs aggressively. 7

Evaluation of Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) study Identification and evaluation of key nuclear plant operation and maintenance (O&M) tasks that would benefit greatly from the incorporation of IPS technology This work was performed as part of the Advanced Nuclear Technologies Program (ANT) While ANT s work is primarily focused on work targeted at new builds, we are always evaluating possible applications of new build research to the existing fleet Primary purpose is to decrease the technological risks, schedule risks, improve supply chain and increase economic competitiveness Addresses multiple stakeholders 13 Focus on targeting issues where EPRI can have an impact
Evaluation of Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) study This evaluation considered implementation of the IPS technology at plants that are under construction and at existing plants Assessment of the technical capabilities of each available (off the shelve) IPS technology, as well as infrastructure requirements, costs, and limitations Examples are discussed for how to select a specific IPS technology once the application and key functionality elements have been defined. Several applications have the potential to provide significant value to the nuclear industry, primarily through staffing cost optimizations 14 EPRI Report published in February 2018
Assessment of Automation Technologies to Reduce Chemistry and Radiochemistry O&M Costs Automation of plant chemistry and radiochemistry activities such as chemical/radiological sampling and analysis has the potential to significantly reduce O&M costs (ANT Project) Automation of chemistry and radiochemistry activities could be especially beneficial at plants that load follow or conduct flexible power operations The technical and economic feasibility of automating chemical/radiological sampling was evaluated, including other candidate plant chemistry and radiochemistry activities that would be enabled by automated sampling and analysis 15 EPRI Report published in December 2017
What is Configuration Management (CM)? Design Requirements Inspection & Testing Processes Conformance Licensing Change Processes Physical Plant Design & Field Change Processes Facility Configurati on Information Work Processes must ensure that elements conform all of the time, all changes are authorized, and conformance can be verified. 16
Data-Centric Configuration Management Project Approach Plant personnel spend up to 40% of their day searching documents Decisions are made on data, not documents Data must be centralized, accurate, change controlled, and easily accessible A Data-Centric Configuration Management (CM) system provides a variety of plant activities with reliable, controlled data the single source of truth Benchmarked 22 Different Organizations including operating plants, new construction, U.S and International, Non-Utilities, Solution Providers, and then National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Validated the costs to build a data centric model with different end states based on industry best practices Use benchmarking to define the opportunity for savings and validated against other industry studies and experience 17
