11 Woe: The data center hardware (Blades, SAN and servers) are 6 years old and need to be refreshed Plan: Build a new data center infrastructure based on VMware and migrate the current environment Benefits: Data Center Consolidation and Virtualization Consolidate multiple single function servers into VMs to reduce power, space, cooling and hardware costs Easier backup, maintenance and disaster recovery Built to be scalable so that as new projects arise, the environment will be able to provide resources for new servers 11

13 Private Cloud APP-V Woe: 100+ software titles on the images Now: Approximately 70% of the applications are virtualized in App-V Benefits: Reduction of image size = faster imaging Virtual applications = minimum need to re-image Ability to publish applications district-wide in a matter of hours vs. months 13

14 Private Cloud APP-V Benefits: Once an application is packaged it can be used in several ways: On any image (Elementary, Secondary, Admin, etc) leveraging the power of the newer HWDSB machines to run locally In the cloud where it can be made available to those workstations which lack the power to run the applications locally In the cloud where it can be made available to BYOD clients or for at home access In a cloud hosted virtual desktop 14

16 Private Cloud Sunset Woe: Approximately 5000 machines which HWDSB considers Sunset (5 years old or older) Plan: Create a private cloud to provide new life for these machines Benefits: Political: Offer some support to these workstations Technical: Ensure consistency of end user experience and allow these machines to run applications which their hardware cannot support due to insufficient resources 16
