Introduction Dell OpenManage Power Center () management console provides increased visibility over power consumption, anomalies, and utilization through fine-grained instrumentation. This enables increased control, improved rack density, faster response times, greater accuracy, and broader decision-making intelligence than would otherwise be possible. When used with a 12th and 13th generation PowerEdge server with an idrac Enterprise license on a system with an Intel chipset, leverages Intel Node Manager technology for platform-level power reporting and capping of Intel chipsets. Power Center then communicates with the Dell idrac on each managed server to provide node, rack, row or data-center level aggregation of power-management data, as well as execution of control policy - making it easy for IT professionals to identify areas to gain efficiencies and cut wasteful costs. Latest version of is v3.2 and is available as a free download. Key Benefits of Dell OpenManage Power Center are: Measure energy consumed by IT equipment at a server, rack, row, or room level Mitigate Risk by reducing power consumption per a pre-defined policies that maximize the uptime of business critical applications by reducing non-critical consumption Increase data center density by identifying racks with equipment not using the power capacity that has been wired into it. When used with Dell PowerEdge servers with an idrac Enterprise license these additional features are available: Enable oversubscribed power supply configurations Customers can set power caps individually or in groups Millisecond fast power capping before tripping a circuit breaker (additional license required for 13th generation Dell servers) Key new features available with 3.2: Hardware Support: o New 13G PowerEdge Servers o Additional PDU models. o Ability to chain PDUs. 24 Lab 9 Device location based on physical location modelling idrac or CMC provide configurable fields to let the user specify the physical system location in a data center. There exist a set of users who had pain to populate this information. This feature aims to make the job of capturing the physical organization of the data center easier in and vice versa. 1. Go to Devices-> Managed Group 2. Select the datacenter 3. Click Update Device Location button in lower pane i. Click Update button. ii. Upon completion you will get the device status summary Page 24 of 37
One of the advantage of Device location feature is you can re-create the hierarchy at any time. There is an option in discovery task wizard to do that. 1. Delete the existing Managed group contents from Device-> managed group-> Delete 2. Create a new Discovery task by providing the name and discovery range. Make sure you have checked Replicate Device Path box. 3. Follow the other screens as mentioned in Lab You can notice that the group hierarchy created automatically in Devices > Managed Group. (You have to set the Estimated Max Power and Rack capacity as soon as the task is finished ) Page 25 of 37
Lab 10 PDU outlet assignment It is difficult to know how servers are connected into the Datacenter s power grid via the PDUs at the rack. Additionally, for non-monitored devices, it s difficult to measure that a device in a certain rack slot is using x amount of power. However can detail the PDU connections to the various devices in the rack, which will aid in power usage reporting when the customer has bought and implemented per-outlet metered PDUs. 1. Select any rack in managed group and click manage rack. 2. In associated devices tab, click add to rack. 3. Select one of the PDU and click finish, close the Manage rack wizard. 4. Go to all devices tab and click Add New. 5. Add an unsupported device with following details. 6. Add the newly created device to the rack that you have selected in step 1 7. In managed Group tab select the rack that have PDU associated in step 3 Page 26 of 37
8. Select Outlet Assignment 9. Click assign 10. Select the PE2900 model and Apply. 11. Click Close. 12. You can see power threshold will be visible for unsupported device. Page 27 of 37
Lab 11 Analysis and Planning From 3.1 onwards users will be able to do the analysis and planning based on Center monitored data. Server Characteristics Power consumption per server model is very useful for planning future expansion in the data center, both from a capacity and a power planning perspective. Current practice is to use a nameplate value supplied by the manufacturer, or an estimate that typically tends to be very conservative. Since has access to power consumption information across all devices in the data center, it can characterize power consumption across server models based on actual usage. This characterization will be reflective of the typical configuration deployed in the data center and will account for the typical workload that gets executed in the setup, due to the fact that it is based on actual data. 1. On the left tree click on analysis->server Characteristics. 2. You may select the graphical view to see the power distribution. Page 28 of 37
3. You can view the Active idle power and peak power for per server models Page 29 of 37
Underutilized Servers One of the ways can help customers is identifying underutilized ( ghost ) servers in the data center based on power consumption patterns. With a global view of power consumption across devices in the data center, helps identify servers that are running little to no workloads, and can be consolidated. 1. On the left pane click on analysis > Underutilized Servers (It may take some time to estimate and load the underutilized servers) 2. You can change the Utilization Classifications by modifying the settings. Page 30 of 37
Power & Space Analysis In the left pane, click Analysis > Power Analysis. The Power & Space Analysis page is displayed. Capacity Planning Allows you to identify the number of servers of a specific device model that can be accommodated in the selected group. 1. In the left pane, click Analysis and then click Power Analysis. The Power & Space Analysis page is displayed. 2. In the Capacity Planning section, click Launch. From the Group Selection tab, select the data centers by clicking + to analyze the availability of power and space. Click Next. 3. In the Model Selection tab, the server models are displayed in Server Model Selection section. Select the required server model for analysis. Click Next. Page 31 of 37
4. In the Capacity Allocation section, the analysis result is displayed. Click Add Another Model to repeat the same procedure with a different server model. Click Next. 5. The summary of the analysis is displayed in the screen. Click Finish. Page 32 of 37
Placement Suggestions Based on Available Power and Space Provides placement suggestions based on the available power and space availability. 1. In the left pane, click Analysis and then click Power Analysis. 2. In the Placement Suggestions Based on Available Power and Space section, click Launch. 3. From the Group Selection tab, select the data centers by clicking + to analyze the availability of power and space. Click Next. 4. In the Placement Type tab, select the type of placement required from the drop-down list. The available options are Auto and Manual. By default, Auto option is selected. Select the server model from the Server Model drop-down list for which you require placement suggestions. Enter the number of servers in the Server Count Text field. Select the criteria in which the racks are selected and click Next. Page 33 of 37
5. In the Rack Placement tab, information about the availability of power and space before and after allocation is displayed. You can set the weightage of the racks by typing the required value in Weightage column of the Set the rack placement priority section and click Next. 6. The placement suggestions are provided in the Rack Placement Result section. Analyze the result and click Next. Click Add Another Model to repeat the same procedure with a different server model. 7. The summary of the analysis is displayed in the Summary screen. Click Finish. Page 34 of 37
Power And Space Gains from Underutilized Server(s). Allows you to estimate the power and space that can be saved from the underutilized servers. 1. In the left pane, click Analysis and then click Power Analysis. 2. In the Power and Space Gains from Underutilized Server(s) section, click Launch. 3. From the Server Selection tab, details about the underutilized servers are displayed. Select the servers by clicking the + next to each server. You can also select all the servers by selecting Consider all underutilized servers option. Click Next. 4. The summary of the analysis is displayed in the Summary screen. Click Finish. Page 35 of 37
Cooling Analysis You can use this page to view and analyze the potential cooling issues of all the rooms in the data center. 1. In the Hot Spot Room section, you can view the rooms that are the hottest in the data center. Click on any room that is listed. 2. Room1: Device(s) Under Hot Spot Room window is displayed. This window will give you the hot spot reason and its resolution Page 36 of 37
