A $100 million effort launched by the Rockefeller Foundation on its Centennial in Created to help cities around the world build resilience to the social, economic and physical challenges that are an increasing part of the 21st century. 100RC is a non-profit entity, managed by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (RPA). 3 Why was 100 RESILIENT CITIES created? To help cities respond to the impacts of three worldwide trends: URBANIZATION Urban populations are growing rapidly: an estimated global population of 9 billion by mid-century, 70% will live in cities. Many are in fragile ecosystems, and the number of people at risk is unprecedented. GLOBALIZATION Cities are more interconnected than ever before, and a system failure in one city can cause problems across the globe. CLIMATE CHANGE Climate change places new social, fiscal and political pressures on urban systems. Bangkok, Thailand 3

Address the impact of growing urbanization, globalization and climate change by accomplishing three key goals: Catalyze social, economic, and physical resilience in our member cities. 8 What is Urban Resilience? Shock or Stress The capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems within a city to survive, adapt, and grow no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience. 8

11 The Chief Resilience Officer The CRO is a catalytic force, transforming the way cities organize themselves to better meet the challenges of building resilience in the 21st century. The CRO will lead the city s resilience building efforts, including: Work across silos to create and implement resilience strategy Serve as a senior advisor to the mayor or city manager Promote resilience thinking and act as both a local and global thought leader Coordinate resilience efforts across government and multi-sector stakeholders Liaise with other CROs, 100RC staff, and service providers via the network and platform 11

12 What is the 100RC Resilience Strategy? A structured activity of 6-9 months resulting in an actionable set of initiatives that will build the city s resilience and signal the market A process to engage a broad and diverse range of city stakeholders A holistic preliminary assessment of a city s resilience, followed by a deep diagnostic on particular focus areas A deliberate objective to leverage existing plans, actions, and programs A process that establishes the ongoing practice of resilience and helps define the role of the CRO in the city A process that leverages global strategy partners and produces similar outputs to aggregate Workshop in Semarang, Indonesia 12

14 What is the 100RC Platform? 100 Resilient Cities provides member cities with access to a suite of resilience-building tools and services supplied by a carefully selected platform of partners from the private, public, academic, and non-profit sectors who are donating their efforts to: Help individual cities access resilience-building tools and services, leveraging resources beyond Rockefeller s core investment. Facilitate the growth of a marketplace for resilience tools. Once Platform Partners better understand what cities need, they can build new tools and improve old ones resilience building tools that will be available to all cities. 14

By being part of the 100RC Network, cities and CROs will be able to: Share best practices Solve problems collectively Learn from each other These network activities will make CROs global resilience ambassadors, and facilitate the creation of a global practice of resilience building.
