5 Data Center Industry Overview Data Center power is split into two categories: Compute Power Facilities Systems There have been tremendous increases in compute efficiency including: Server virtualization (up to 80% less power) Increased performance of processors Blade Servers (increased density of racks) Data Centers use between 15x and 30x the power per square foot of office buildings Power used by Data Centers is doubling every 5 years Efficiency in Facilities and Power loads is developing May 10, 2011 Slide 5

7 Overview of Date Center Industry IBM s Data Center revenues were $38B in 2008 (Data Center Dynamics newsletter 12-08) Mechanical and Electrical Costs are 70% of construction costs of Data Center (vs 15% in office building) PUE is a common measure of Data Center Power usage Ideal is 1.2 Current goal is 1.5 Observed is typically 2.0 or more (Source : The Green Grid White Paper Describing Datacentre Power Efficiency ) May 10, 2011 Slide 7

Which of the trends in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) are most relevant to your site? Are tier levels still relevant? Is a traditional BMS is required to manage your data center? 9 Myth Busting: Do Higher Voltages make Power Distribution More Efficient? European Voltages (230/400Y) are an easy way to increase power density using existing wiring. Servers come with universal power supplies typically V AC P=EI = Savings in Cu No less transformation Higher energy available = higher cost equipment Verdict: TRUE May 10, 2011 Slide 9

10 Myth Busting: Is DC Distribution the Wave of the Future? Computers are DC Devices DC (depending on topology) requires significantly less transformation and transformation losses NEC doesn t recognize DC only wiring (negates Cu benefits of no skin effect) DC equipment, if available, sold at a premium (lighting, drives, fans, motors) Verdict: Promising! Tier Levels were established by the Uptime Institute to define Power System topology, higher the tier level, the higher the resiliency Only 2 Tier IV accredited Uptime Institute data centers exist in North America Some info (ref 7x24 Fall 2010 conf) shows that dual redundancy leads to DECREASED availability Many customers are using tiered zones within their data center.
