Kao is the first major entrant to the wholesale data centre market for years T he 200m development will eventually provide 35MW of technical space in a cutting edge, resilient and highly efficient data centre. The data centre campus is situated on the former Nortel compound in Harlow fittingly the birthplace of fibre technology and now home to a technology business park. In close proximity to major transport infrastructure, the area is a major focal point for innovation.

3 DESIGNED TO BE SCALABLE FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW Paul Finch, COO, Kao Data Campus Kao Data s concurrently maintainable infrastructure provides customers a platform to deliver highly efficient IT architecture in an environment that meets volume server warrantees. The site has its own 43.5MVA utility supply, with transformers located on-campus. Kao s unique, Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IEC) units, provide highly efficient climate control, while offering a resilient back-up capability in the unlikely scenario of a unit failure. Customer cabinets are in enclosures and utilise hot aisle containment, which enables higher density racks, up to 20kW, to be optimised using industry leading cooling technologies. The advanced design of Kao Data Campus provides assured uptime and low operating costs.

4 MEETING AND EXCEEDING CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS GERARD THIBAULT, CTO, KAO DATA CAMPUS Kao Data Campus enables the requirements of a wide range of colocation and wholesale data centre customers to be met. All customers have individual requirements, so Kao Data Campus offers a range of solutions. If the requirement is small, we can provide a rack in a shared environment. If the requirement is larger, Kao offers a Technology Cell or a Technology Suite solution. And where rapid scalability may be needed, Kao s reservation service facilitates customers to grow their footprint and fill an entire Technology Suite. Kao s Technology Cell service provides a 34-rack cube up to 350kW (average 10kW/ rack to a maximum 20kW/ rack), with a contained hot aisle. The Kao Technology Suite service offers customers a 2.2MW dedicated data centre with its own fire zone, dedicated PDU and cooling infrastructure.

5 FULLY RESILIENT, HIGHLY EFFICIENT INFRASTRUCTURE The Kao Data Campus is designed for 100% availability. It has fully redundant UPS to provide up to 5 minutes runtime, and N+1 diesel generators with dedicated tanks to ensure operation at full load for a maximum of 48 hours, with priority refuelling contracts in place. In addition, the indirect evaporative cooling system is N+1, providing peace of mind in the unlikely event of a unit failure. The electrical and mechanical system has been designed to power and cool IT equipment in the most reliable and efficient manner, and an ultra-low PUE of 1.2 has been proven.

6 OPTIONS AND SERVICES TO MEET INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS Kao Data offers a full range of professional services to ensure customer satisfaction. For routine, out-of-hours or emergency assistance, the Remote Hands Service offers access to onsite engineers to investigate and complete a range of agreed tasks remotely within their own rack space. Other services include metered power service to monitor load levels in real-time and avoid potential PDU overloads; office space for customers who wish to house permanent staff on site; storage space, parking space, data cabling and installations services. We can even install your approved dish or antenna on the roof.

8 THE HOME OF INNOVATION SIR CHARLES KAO WAS AWARDED THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR PHYSICS The Kao Park site has long been synonymous with scientific discovery and innovation. In the 1940 s, it was the birthplace of wartime navigation system, OBOE. For many years it was home to the main research laboratory of UK telecoms pioneer, Standard Telephones and Cables Company. Innovation at Kao Park changed the world of communications forever and paved the way for broadband internet with Sir Charles Kao and George Hockham s invention of fibre optic cable in A discovery so significant that Sir Charles Kao was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in Today, Kao Data is determined to continue that pioneering legacy.
