Prefabricated Data Center Solutions: Coming of Age Steven Carlini - Global Data Center Marketing Director April 2014 Schneider Electric 1
Schneider Electric 2
Your ability to compete relies on the design, build, and operation of your large data center Speed Improve speed to operation Manage change quickly and easily Automate and orchestrate IT Cost Minimize or defer capital costs Optimize operating costs Maximize available whitespace Performance Design for desired uptime Maintain and monitor for desired uptime Deploy power, cooling, and IT capacity as needed Utilize energy saving technologies Safe environment Schneider Electric 3
IT Trends Relaxed operating standards Servers without UPS Social technologies Energy consciousness Lower Tiers Mobile devices Co-location Rising security concerns Converged IT Prefabricated modular data centers New cooling techniques Schneider Electric 4
The move to Cloud Computing is reinforcing the need for speed, cost, and performance Promises made by cloud providers >lower costs >more modularity and portability >instant scalability and capacity >greater application flexibility and portability Schneider Electric 5
Room for improvement in performance, cost, and speed in todays data center design and build process Top 5 Weaknesses 1. Long design time leading up to construction documents 2. Multiple design and/or equipment changes drive up cost and construction time 3. Multiple vendor management 4. Multiple markups driving higher overall cost 5. Coordination and integration challenges increasing both cost and construction time Lower Performance Higher Cost Slower Speed Schneider Electric 6
What we ve learned over 45 years We can t get this More efficient More reliable Higher density More predicable More cost effective Faster Deploy and scale Simpler experience by just making better components (UPS, switchgear, controls, air conditioners, power distribution, etc) Schneider Electric 7
The industry has many players and approaches Schneider Electric 8
Promises from the prefabricated data centers Lower Cost Faster and Easier Standardized Has this worked? Schneider Electric 9
What the players are saying about prefabrication We don't believe there's a good reason to go the traditional route the vast majority of the time "We're a huge supporter of modular. We're a limited supporter of containerbased data centers," (Google Search) the top drivers are the ability to scale capacity as needed and to stagger capital costs across a long period "We're just at the cusp of broad adoption, from 2008 new ultra-modular approach to data center design will enable 50-percent capital-cost savings associated with design and construction, in addition to dramatic reductions energy cost and deployment time. All of that also comes with a PUE of 1.18 Schneider Electric 10
Customers not convinced of benefits Many are satisfied with traditional data centre design and build process evolved over 45 years Unique requirements not aligned with the standardized offer from many vendors Early prefabricated solutions were strictly ISO containers and housed thousands of servers Initial product introductions just proof-of-concepts Initial prefabricated cost advantage claims were exaggerated When the industry provides the right pieces then prefabrication will get momentum. Schneider Electric 11
5 Barriers to success for prefabricated data centers Limited option of building block types and capacities to address various needs Lack of data center designs for the entire physical infrastructure solution Reliable comparison tools not available Vendors not offering complete solution Assess, Plan, Design, Build, Operate Little or no integration of DCIM into building blocks Schneider Electric 12
Applications for prefab are varied Do not have consistent requirements Large/Multi-tenant data center Scalable growth - improve cash flow Building retrofit Existing building infrastructure cannot support future growth Factory environment Harsh/corrosive conditions Small/Medium data center IT manager lacks staff to support infrastructure design Industrial and remote Standalone data center anywhere Latency reducing micro data centers Drop in place complete data centers with IT, SW, and physical infrastructure Schneider Electric 13
This range of applications demands different types of modules Need to be available in a range of configurations and capacities Multiple form factors and power ranges, inside or outside deployment Building Blocks used independently or together to form a data centre solution Configurable Power Modules Flexible Chilled Water solutions Spacious IT Modules High Capacity Power Skids Efficient Air Economization Modules All-in-One Modules Schneider Electric 14
Prefabricated building blocks should be defined first by overall design Cooling IT Power Schneider Electric 15
All Prefabricated Data Centres are not equal Traditional, Semi-Prefabricated and fully prefabricated options Schneider Electric 16
Example: Fully Prefabricated Data Center Reference Design # kw Tier II (2) 250 kw Power Modules (3) 250 kw Chillers (2) 240 kw, 22 rack IT Modules (1) 500 kw Hydronics Module Schneider Electric 17
Example: Fully Prefabricated Data Center Reference Design #30 1 MW Tier III (4) 240 kw, 22 rack IT Modules (4) 500 kw Power Modules (3) 500 kw Chillers (1) 1000 kw Hydronics Module Schneider Electric 18
Example: Fully Prefabricated Data Center Reference Design #36 2 MW Tier III (8) 240 kw, 22 rack IT Modules (8) 500 kw Power Modules (6) 500 kw Chillers (2) 1000 kw Hydronics Module Schneider Electric 19
Example: Semi-Prefabricated Data Center Reference Design #34 2 MW Tier III (2) 1000 kw Hydronics Modules (2) IT Halls (4) 1200 kw Power Skids (6) 500 kw Chillers Schneider Electric 20
Reference designs should be freely available Downloadable from a web site Library of engineered data center reference designs System level specifications PUE, Price, Density, Layout Complete schematics and BOMs Fully and Semi-Prefabricated data center designs Schneider Electric 21
Tools are needed to understand trade offs Cost analysis of traditional vs prefabrication Schneider Electric 22
And the impact based on densities. Cost analysis of traditional vs prefabrication Trade off tool can be used to validate when it makes sense to go with a prefabricated design Prefab cost per kw in IT space may exceed a traditional design Redundancy, capacity, future growth, financial risk all affect cost comparison Schneider Electric 23
Prefab deals need more assistance Assessment Services for existing or planned facilities or sites to understand viability of using prefabrication Planning Services to demonstrate where prefabrication could benefit performance, cost or timing Design and Build Services Reference design starting points Data centers with all prefabricated modules Hybrid data center with mix of prefabricated modules and traditional Project management including installation management, site coordination, and construction coordination Schneider Electric 24
All prefab should be smart out of box Fully instrumented and programmed in each building block Schneider Electric 25
And compatible and open with other tools Schneider Electric 26
Prefab can be complete Full data center infrastructure, SW and applications in the box Integrated Layers of a Micro Data Center Physical Infrastructure Servers and Networking Operating System Middleware, Applications/Services Schneider Electric 27
Site constraints and customer preferences require customization Modify individual modules Local code compliance changes, fire and security, power ratings, voltages, component preferences Layout, 3 rd party equipment, man traps, staging, environmental considerations Modify the solution configurations Redundancy levels, power levels, cooling preference, IT racks and density, module layouts Schneider Electric 28
Summary Schneider Electric 29
Prefabrication and reference designs simplify the data centre life cycle Reference Designs simplify the Plan and Design phases Design and Build are simplified with Prefabricated modular data centres Operations (remote management and maintenance) are simplified with Prefabricated modular data centers Schneider Electric 30
Prefabricated Data Center advantages...
