1 ALUMINIUM IN THE GULF gac.ae NEWSLETTER October 2015 GAC New Office The GAC board members officially opened GAC new office on 6th October 2015, located in the Oberoi Center, Business Bay, Dubai. Market Update The annual market update for the aluminium industry was held on 6th October in Dubai. It was attended by Chief Executive Officers, Chief Marketing Officers, Marketing Managers and other senior executives from the primary and downstream members of GAC. This year s presenters were Julian Kettle - Vice Chairman of Metals and Mining, Wood Machenzie, Paul Adkins - Founder & Managing Director, AZ China Ltd, Natasha Kaneva -Executive Director, Global Commodities Research, Nick Madden - SVP & Chief Supply Chain officer, Novelis Inc, Georgina Hallett - Chief of Staff, London Metal Exchange.

2 INTERVIEW Khalid Laram CEO - Qatalum Q1. What changes should we expect? There are a number of priorities that we will be focusing on such as: Qatalum s main priority would be one of our key missions, safety with zero incident as the target. The aim is not only to maintain our excellent safety record but to improve it at every level throughout the operations. We will be setting highest standards of corporate social responsibility towards our staff and contractor alike to be the leading organisations in Qatar in this regard. With a view to lowering costs, diversification of raw material sources and qualification of new sources are a main objective. Alongside this, we are improving performance, productivity and assisting in developing the fledgling downstream market in Qatar. Governance would be one of the key principles that will determine our procurement policies, contracts and at all our activities. We will be working towards securing bigger share in the international market with high quality value added product mix, to meet our international customers need for quality and delivery. Q2. Where do you see Qatalum in 5 years time? Qatalum will be leaner and more efficient with improved cost curves in business and operation, through high quality product with minimum capital expenditure. With the efforts of operation and marketing teams, we will try to increase our share in the auto industry in five years time. We will also be even more advanced on all the aspects of sustainability measures through recycling of waste products, reducing energy and water consumption, through more efficient operation in the smelter and power station. Nationals at Qatalum are critical for long-term sustainability, therefore, with this in mind, Qatalum is working towards building a knowledge base within Qatar that educates the nation about aluminium. Q3. What are Qatalum s main challenges? Our main challenges would be attracting nationals to the aluminium industry, especially that Qatar can provide many other work opportunities, not to mention opportunities that already exist in oil and gas industry. Having said that we will be focusing on competency and knowledge to achieve our objectives. The second challenge is to improve the standards of competency and performance of local contractor to meet Qatalum expectations. We will be working very closely with them to achieve our objective, whether it s safety, work performance or behaviour. Q4. Will there be new downstream development in Qatar? There is considerable support at all levels of business in Qatar s vision 2030 and a big part of it is in growing nonhydrocarbon based industries. As part of Qatalum s role in the economic diversification plan, we see assisting and guiding of a domestic aluminium downstream industry as one of our marketing objectives. We have put several initiatives into supporting current and potential downstream industries including commitment to supply and technical services. Two extrusions plants are already in operation with more inquiries under discussion.

4 GARMCO receives CE Certificate AGM Meeting The CE marking is the manufacturer s declaration that the product meets the requirements of the applicable of EC directives. CE marking on a product ensures the free movement of the product within the EFTA & European Union (EU) single market (total 28 countries). AGM Meeting on 6th October at GAC Office GAC Health Committee GARMCO signs re-melt expansion contract with Fives Health committee attended a special meeting on 3rd September at Alba where they exchanged best practices as part of their periodic meetings. GAC Maintenance Committee GARMCO has awarded a contract worth $47 million to Fives to build a new state of art casthouse at GARMCO s Bahrain based facilities. The re-melt project is an EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) turn-key project, which will enable GARMCO to develop its metal recycling capability and lower the cost of metal casting. The project will run for a duration of approximately 21 months, starting September The first stage has already commenced and it s being managed internally by GARMCO with the support of a local supplier. This stage consists of the construction of a scrap area and segregation unit. The new project, once complete, will enable GARMCO to produce 120,000 tonnes of aluminium slabs. Maintenance committee met at Alba on 4th June to discuss plant reliability and maintenance issues of common concerns. They also toured the operational area of Alba.

5 CYBER SECURITY Cyber Security - Ten tips for companies to improve 1. Cybersecurity should not be treated as a subset of information technology or similar responsibilities. 2. Conduct regular security audits. At least once a year, bring in professionals to identify the most easily targeted parts of operation, the most likely methods for attack, and the strength of existing defenses. 3. Assume that if the company has not been hacked, it will be. Invest in software to monitor all network traffic and especially track outbound connections. Hackers not only have to get in, they have to get the data out again. 4. Identify your most critical digitized assets and isolate them. If at all possible remove them from networked machines. Develop a strict procedure for access. For other data, grant access only to employees who need them. 5. Acknowledge the death of the perimeter defence. Employees will bring in portable miniature drives that connect directly to networked machines, and some of the drivers are likely to be infected. You need a layered defense that works on multiple levels simultaneously. 6. Use active gateway protection. One of the easiest means of entry into a company is through a website with malicious content. Security programs that block websites with poor reputations are not enough. A better bet is defense software that checks every page visited for bad code. 7. Exercise caution with mobile and other remote access. It is always easier to compromise a consumer s machine than a workplace machine. Either assume full responsibility for securing all employee devices that can access company assets or set strict limits on what those machines can do. 8. Train your workforce - all of it. s to senior executives that appear to come from colleagues or customers, referencing relevant material, may be laden with programs that provide back doors for hackers. But the rank and file must be educated, too wherever they go on the internet and whatever software they use could expose the company. 9. Patch your systems. A great number of hacking incidents can be avoided with the timely installation of patches that have been issued by software makers that are aware of vulnerabilities. 10. Minimize the amount of power that employee machines have and the data they retain. Do not give out administrator ability to install new programs easily, and closely monitor those who have it. Reduce the data kept about customers to what is really needed, encrypt it, and delete it when there is no good reason for keeping it. Adopted from Financial Times
