UK Rail Research and Innovation Network The Railway Supply Group Strategy, which was launched in February 2016 has the objective of transforming the supply industry making the UK a global leader in rail. By 2025, the rail supply industry aims to: More than double export volumes and values Attract the very best UK talent to create a sustainable skills base and to develop new technologies Harness the energy, drive and innovation of SMEs to meet the needs of the global railway market Be a global leader in High Speed Rail Have an entrepreneurial supply chain that innovates to meet customer needs RSG will prioritise innovation in its five key technology areas across the UK by developing a network of new Centres of Excellence in collaboration with government, universities and business growth incubators.

UKRRIN Objectives Support and build UK rail sector capacity and capability to develop, deliver and deploy new technologies Deliver a step change investment in rail innovation through a worldleading network of UK- based research and testing centres Radically increase UK rail productivity and performance by delivering transformational innovations and accelerating its uptake Develop new strategic relationships with the small medium sized enterprise supply chain, rail industry and wider transport sector

Partner Selection RSG formed a steering group which comprised members of RSG and TLG to select the universities to lead and collaborate in each of the Centres. In August 2016 the following universities were selected to develop each of the Centres: Lead: University of Birmingham Digital: University of Birmingham Rolling Stock: University of Huddersfield with Newcastle University and Loughborough University Infrastructure: University of Southampton with University of Sheffield, Loughborough University, Heriot Watt University and Nottingham University Testing: Network Rail with London Underground, Quinton Rail Technology Centre (Long Marston)

Capacity for Rail Centre of Excellence in Rolling Stock

Rolling Stock Centre Objectives The Centre of Excellence in Rolling Stock (CERS) will meet the current and future demands of the GB rail industry for research and innovation to support the next generation of railway vehicles. The Centre will link with other centres in the UKRRIN Network to provide a one stop shop for all rolling stock development. The work of the Centre will support the Four Cs of the Rail Technical Strategy and cover rolling stock of all types including passenger, freight, Light Rail, Metro, High Speed etc. In particular the research will accelerate innovations that will reduce cost and carbon emissions using emerging technologies including alternative materials, manufacturing methods, energy technologies and applied digital solutions for design, operation and maintenance.

Rolling Stock Centre Facilities The Centre will build on the expertise of the internationally recognised teams at Huddersfield, Newcastle and Loughborough Universities and will provide the following high quality research and worldclass testing facilities: The Traction Drivetrain and Braking facility The Pantograph Interaction Dynamics Facility The Structural Integrity and Crashworthiness Facility The Virtual Train Design Lab The Maintenance Reliability and Passenger Interaction Facility The Flexible Hardware in the Loop Facility

Capacity for Rail Centre of Excellence in Infrastructure

Infrastructure Centre objectives Establish a linked set of regional / national / international experimental facilities and associated (including analytical) expertise Interface with major rail infrastructure owners and providers of rail infrastructure services (design, construction, materials and component supply, repair, operation, maintenance) Enable railway infrastructure to be safe, affordable, reliable and resilient

National Infrastructure Laboratory 27

Infrastructure Centre facilities National Infrastructure Laboratory, Southampton (April 2019) structures laboratory: 15m x 30m strong floor geotechnical centrifuge Hydromechanics including wind tunnels; general geotechnical; high voltage; noise and vibration laboratories; autonomous vehicles Sheffield invest in increased capacity for testing of full size components rail materials and support new materials and friction management at the rail-wheel interface power supply infrastructure, primarily overhead line dynamics, design and maintenance Nottingham existing expertise for better understanding of asset degradation Loughborough existing HIL capability Heriot-Watt existing capability in track structure research (GRAFT II)

Capacity for Rail Centre of Excellence in Testing

Testing Centre Objectives The Centre of Excellence in Testing will support the acceleration of adoption and transformational change in rail systems technology, and new railway products and services. This Centre will link with the other 3 Centres in the UKRRIN Network to provide a one stop shop for testing and trialling. The work of the Centre will support the Four Cs of the Rail Technical Strategy, and in particular Key Capability 12 in the Capability Delivery Plan. This Centre, led by Network Rail, incorporates access to existing at-scale test facilities, including Network Rail s Rail Innovation & Development Centres (RIDC Melton and RIDC Tuxford), Transport for London (Acton & Stratford), and Quinton Rail Technology Centre (Long Marston).

Testing Centre Capabilities - RIDC Melton facility has been purpose-built to support both high and low speed testing of vehicles and infrastructure using 11 miles of 25kV overhead line equipment and 3rd/4th rail DC equipment. It has the capacity and capability to support new and modified technology demonstrators and trials, and now includes the recently added Telecom Innovation Lab.

Testing Centre Capabilities - RIDC Tuxford facility provide 10 miles of single-line test track with a three-mile double section, capable of testing up to 75mph. It offers a short section of non-live 25kV type catenary and a short section of non-live 3rd/4th rail.
