2 Return of Investment (ROI) With our solution you will save up to 43x of storage stored (GB) TSM stored (GB) TSM stored (GB) with dedup This picture illustrates a full backup to disk (red lines), and how much the storage increases in gigabyte of a 10 gigabyte sized database, with 30 days of retention. With our soluton you do not need to run full backups every day. You can execute it every week, with an incremental execution in-between, which is illustrated in the (yellow lines). If you enable TSM version 6, with deduplication and compression, the volume will be dramatically lower (green lines). Note: We have not taken into consideration that additional space is required for the local backup dump (the space occupied the file system for the dump); we have only calculated with the amount of space used in TSM.

3 Backup Window Asynchronous versus Synchronous backup There is no guarantee that the Progress backups are protected with TSM with a backup to disk solution (see illustration below) Asynchronous backup without taking care of different scheduled tasks Progress backup in progress TSM file backup in progress In this example, the Progress backup can still be in progress while TSM file system backup is running. 4 Recovery Point Objective (RPO) You can perform more frequently backups as the volume is smaller on the incremental backups. Maximum data loss will be 1 hour The example above illustrates how if you perform an incremental backup every odd hour.

5 Recovery Time Objective The maximum downtime for the application during a restoration will be shorter due to that the data is retrieved in parallel directly from TSM into the Progress Server. The illustration above shows a restore of 4 databases in parallel into the Progress Server. The grey boxes is the incremental (transaction logs) restore and recovery on the Progress Server. If this would have been done manually, the downtime would be much longer due to that it might not be done in parallel, and that you have to do the restoration, and recovery in different steps. 1) Restore the local backup dump files from TSM (red boxes) 2) Restore the incremental backup files from TSM (grey boxes) 3) Restore the Progress database (yellow box) 4) Recover the Progress databases from incremental backup file (green boxes)
