2 Why do we need to use reliable sources? Where can you go for information that you KNOW isn t FAKE?

3 There are many sources to use when you are researching. Newspapers & Magazines Books Interviews Surveys Library Databases Websites

4 Library Subscription Databases Peer Reviewed, Academic & Scholarly Sources, for free.

5 What are Library Databases?

6 Databases are digital libraries that allow you to access searchable lists of the following: Historical and current newspapers Magazines Books Encyclopedias Scholarly and peer-reviewed journals Images Audio and video clips Databases are online subscriptions services and usually password protected. Each database contains thousands of articles and resources like those above.

7 Scholarly & Academic Sources & Peer Reviewed Journals Find scholarly or peer-reviewed journals in library databases Journals are published periodically (monthly, quarterly, yearly) Articles are written by an expert (scholar, professor, researcher, etc.) in field covered Textbooks, encyclopedias, and books written for commercial use are generally not considered academic or scholarly.

8 Peer Reviewed Journals Peer review process: A qualified author submits an original paper to a journal. The paper is reviewed for accuracy by the editor and experts in the same field of study. The article is either published or rejected.

11 The Bryant Library offers over 100 databases and electronic resources. Use your Bryant Library card number for access. If you do not have your library card, you may use one of the guest logins located on the password sheet.

13 Confirms your IP address NOVEL-NY databases are free to anyone who lives in New York. They are found on RHS Library s website and Bryant Library s website.

18 Type a keyword in the search bar. You can use limiters to narrow your search.

19 DON T FORGET TO CITE! Every database has a citation tool. Citation tool appears when you click on your article. You can download the citation or copy and paste it into NoodleTools!

20 Use the Bryant Library, FindIt!, NOVELNY or the HS Library to find TWO databases that pertain to the topics given to you. Write the names the two databases you choose and give reasons why you feel these are the best databases to use based on your topic. (ex. General Science Collection, Facts on File, Biography in Context, etc.) Bonus: Find a database article about one of the topics.
