Optimizing the Data Integration Service to Process Concurrent Web Services 2012 Informatica Corporation. No part of this document may be reproduced or transmitted in any form, by any means (electronic, photocopying, recording or otherwise) without prior consent of Informatica Corporation.
Abstract You can optimize the Data Integration Service to process concurrent web services. The Data Integration Service processes concurrent web service requests based on how you configure the Data Integration Service properties, the Data Integration Service Process properties, and the application properties for each web service object. When you optimize the properties that impact web service concurrency, you can increase performance. Supported Versions Data Services Table of Contents Overview Step 1. Configure Data Integration Service Properties... 2 Step 2. Configure Data Integration Service Process Properties Step 3. Configure Application Properties Processing Concurrent Requests Example - Concurrent Request Limits Overview You can optimize the Data Integration Service to process concurrent web services. When you optimize the properties that impact web service concurrency, you can increase performance. The Data Integration Service processes concurrent web service requests based on how you configure the Data Integration Service properties, the Data Integration Service Process properties, and the application properties for each web service object. When you configure the Data Integration Service to run concurrent web services, consider the following points: Number of concurrent request that you want to run Response time requirements Number of CPUs on the machine that runs the Data Integration Service Amount of memory available on the machine that runs the Data Integration Service Tip: If the domain is setup for monitoring, verify that you have a separate Model repository to store the historical statistics. Performance may decrease when you use the same Model repository for Data Integration Service statistics and run-time processes. Step 1. Configure Data Integration Service Properties To optimize concurrent web service processing, consider updating the configuration of the Data Integration Service properties for web services. To configure the Data Integration Service properties, select the Data Integration Service in the Navigator of the Administrator tool and click the Properties view. The Data Integration Service properties display in the contents panel. Consider updating the configuration of the DTM Keep Alive Time property for the Data Integration Service properties for web services. 2
DTM Keep Alive Time The number of milliseconds that a DTM process remains active in order to process incoming web service requests. Even when there are no incoming web service requests, the DTM process remains active for the amount of time that you configure. When the time is exceeded, the existing DTM process is no longer active and the Data Integration Service starts a new DTM process for the next incoming request. Default is 5000 milliseconds. Set this property to a value that is greater than or equal to the average response time for the web service request. You can configure the DTM Keep Alive Time property in the Data Integration Service properties or the web service Application properties. If you configure a non-negative value for the DTM Keep Alive Time property in the web service Application properties, the value in the web service Application properties overrides the value in the Data Integration Service properties. Note: The ability to use an existing DTM process increases performance. However, the Data Integration Service requires additional resources to start a DTM process for each request on an operation. Keeping the DTM active consumes memory. Therefore, users should consider the memory consumption when configuring this option. Step 2. Configure Data Integration Service Process Properties To optimize concurrent web service processing, consider updating the configuration of the Data Integration Service Process properties. To configure the Data Integration Service Process properties, select the Data Integration Service in the Navigator of the Administrator tool and click the Process view. The Data Integration Service Process properties display in the contents panel. Consider updating the configuration of the following Data Integration Service Process properties: Maximum Backlog Requests Maximum Heap Size Maximum Execution Pool Size The maximum number of HTTP or HTTPS connections that can be made to this Data Integration Service process. Default is 200. You must restart the Data Integration Service to apply the changes. Set this property to a value that is less than the Maximum Execution Pool Size property. Note: This property impacts the number of requests that the Data Integration Services accepts before it sends the requests to the Data Integration Service backlog. Maximum Backlog Requests The maximum number of HTTP or HTTPS connections that can wait in a queue for this Data Integration Service process. Default is 100. You must restart the Data Integration Service to apply the changes. To prevent the Data Integration Service from rejecting request because the backlog is full, set this property to a value that is greater than the number of clients that connect to the Data Integration Service minus the number of concurrent requests. Maximum Heap Size The amount of RAM allocated to the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that runs the Data Integration Service. Append one of the following letters to the value to specify the units: b for bytes k for kilobytes m for megabytes 3
g for gigabytes Default is 512 megabytes. Consider increasing the maximum heap size when the Data Integration Service processes a large number of concurrent requests. Maximum Execution Pool Size The maximum number of requests that the Data Integration Service can run concurrently. Requests include data previews, mappings, profiling jobs, SQL queries, and web service requests. Default is 10. Set this property to a value that is greater than the property. Note: When you increase the pool size value, the DTM process of the Data Integration Service uses more hardware resources such as CPU, memory, and system I/O. Set this value based on the resources available on the machine and the data service requirements. For example, consider the number of CPUs on the machine that hosts the Data Integration Service and the amount of memory that is available to the Data Integration Service. Step 3. Configure Application Properties To optimize concurrent web service processing, consider updating the configuration of the application properties for each web service. To configure the application properties for a web service, select the Data Integration Service in the Navigator of the Administrator tool, click the Application view, and select the web service. The web service properties display in the details panel. Consider updating the configuration of the following application properties for each web service: Trace Level Trace Level The level of error messages that the Data Integration Service writes to the run-time web service log. Default is INFO. The number of web service log files that the Data Integration Service writes and maintains can decrease performance. Therefore, set the value of this property to OFF so that the Data Integration Service does not generate run-time web service logs. Alternatively, if you want the Data Integration Service to generate run-time web service logs in case of an error, set the Skip Log Files property of the Data Integration Service to true and set the value of this property to INFO or higher. The maximum number of requests that a web service can process at one time. Default is 10. To avoid maximum concurrency failures for web services, set the value of this property equal to the Data Integration Service. Processing Concurrent Requests The Data Integration Service processes concurrent web service requests based on the properties that you configure for the Data Integration Service, the Data Integration Service Process, and the web service object within the application. The following figure shows the process that the Data Integration Service follows when it receives a web service request: 4
A web service client send a SOAP request to the Data Integration Service. If the Data Integration Service can accept the request without exceeding the maximum number of concurrent requests, the Data Integration Service adds the request to its active queue. Otherwise, the Data Integration Service considers adding the request to its backlog. The Data Integration Service can add a request to the backlog when the number of request in the backlog is less than the maximum number of backlog requests. Otherwise, the Data Integration Service rejects the request. Requests in the backlog are added to the active queue as space becomes available. 5
After the request is in the Data Integration Service active queue, the Data Integration Service attempts to add the request to the Web Service active queue. If the Web Service module can accept the request without exceeding the maximum number of concurrent web service requests, the Data Integration Service adds the request to the web service active queue. Otherwise, the SOAP request fails. After the request is in the Web Service active queue, the Web Service module attempts to add the request to the DTM active queue so that the DTM can process the request. If the DTM active queue can accept the request without exceeding the maximum execution pool size, the DTM processes the request and returns the SOAP response to the web service client. Otherwise, the SOAP request fails. Example - Concurrent Request Limits You can configure the maximum number of concurrent requests for the Data Integration Service Process and the web service object. Web service requests fail when the number of concurrent web service requests exceed the maximum value that you configure for the web service. With the following configuration, the Data Integration Service Process can accept 200 concurrent requests and the web service can accept 10 concurrent requests: Property Type Property Name Property Value Data Integration Service Process Maximum Concurrent Request 200 Application: Web Service Maximum Concurrent Request 10 As a result, web service requests fail when the Data Integration Service Process receives more than 10 concurrent requests for the web service. Tip: Consider configuring the Data Integration Service Process and the web service object to use the same maximum concurrent request value. Or, set the web service maximum value to a value that reflects the number of concurrent web service requests expected in your environment.
