6 User Interface User Interface General Cncepts Placement f Actin Icns There are sme basic rules regarding the layut f the user interface which prvides cnsistency and ease f navigatin. In particular, actin icns (e.g., Search r View Reprts) are rganized int tw categries: Actins which relate t the panel verall (e.g., mdel r cnfiguratin) Actins which apply t a selected metadata element within the panel (e.g., a table r clumn in a mdel) and placed accrdingly in the UI: Overall panel icns are placed n the right hand side f the header fr the panel Selected metadata element icns are placed n the left in the tl bar fr the panel (underneath the header). Standard graphical navigatin tl bar Lineage verview, lineage traces and mdel diagrams are highly graphical results, and thus a standard graphical navigatin bar (see the diagram visualizatin r graphical lineage UI) is used cnsistently thrughut Oracle Metadata Management (OMM) fr navigating within these graphical presentatins. Yu may quickly navigate arund the diagram using the Overview, which may be cllapsed. Expand r cllapse using the Overview ( ) icn. Yu may click anywhere inside the Overview pane. One may als drag the display area rectangle arund the Overview panning the diagram Yu may resize the display area rectangle inside the Overview pane by dragging the bttm right crner. While ne cannt permanently alter a diagram (r create new nes) fr a simple mdel, nevertheless all f the layut, anntatin, display level, etc., features may be emplyed fr visualizatin. Yu may always return t the riginal published layut by clicking n the Shw riginal buttn. Oracle Metadata Management (OMM) supprts full business level lineage and impact analysis dwn t the classifier (table/entity/dimensin) and feature (clumn/attribute/measure) level. 37 Generally, there are tw types f lineage: Data Flw based upn cnnectin definitins t data stres and physical transfrmatin rules which transfrm and mve the data Semantic, e.g., detailing the relatinships frm a cnceptual t lgical mdel, r a lgical t physical mdel. Oracle Metadata Management (OMM) can allw users t display and analyze bth types f lineage. Abut lineage tracing Data Flw Lineage These are the reprting analysis type use cases, generally psed as questins such as: Given an item n a reprt, what data entry system fields impact these results? Why are the numbers n this reprt the way that they are? Hw d change the system data t get the crrect the results f this reprt? This type f analysis, i.e., asking where the infrmatin cmes frm, is a questin psed upstream in the dataflw. We refer t it as a reverse lineage questin. When cnsumers f these reprts ask these questins, a crrect and respnsive answer may be the mst valuable infrmatin prvided by a metadata management slutin. Semantic Definitin In this scenari, frm the same reprt ne may wish t simply discver what are the meanings f these reprt fields. Semantic Usage In this scenari, ne may wish t see the usage f the semantic element (e.g., business glssary term) in the architecture. Shw Reprts In this scenari, ne may wish t see the business reprts that use fields which are semantically related t a particular semantic element (e.g., business glssary term). Data Flw Impact Finally, business users may ask the frward lineage r impact analysis type f questins: If I make a change t this field, what reprts will be impacted? Hw is this identity infrmatin merged with the persnnel system infrmatin n these ther reprts? 38 In this use case, ne has fund a data element (a clumn in a table in a database fr example, r a field in a reprt) and wants t understand what it means. By defining the semantic links prperly, Oracle Metadata Management (OMM) can trace back thrugh the physical data flw (as lng as there is n transfrmatin which wuld change the meaning) t an element that is mapped t a term in the business glssary and thus find a useful definitin. The caveat that the abve nly wrks as lng as there is n transfrmatin which wuld change the meaning implies that sme subset f the fields in yur reprts will nt prvide a semantic definitin. The trace will simply stp at the transfrmatin and never get t a mdel (again likely the data warehuse) that has semantic lineage. S, in additin t this methd f trace thrugh the dataflw as lng as there is n transfrmatin which wuld change the meaning, there is anther which is search based r name matching based. In this case, if there is a field in a reprt named Net Accunt Amunt and it des nt have a gd data flw trace withut transfrmatin, ne culd still create a term in the business glssary named Net Accunt Amunt. When requesting a data element definitin lkup in that case, Oracle Metadata Management (OMM) will perfrm a search fr that term and reprt its definitin, even withut a clean lineage trace. In mst case, it will be necessary t fill in the blanks in sme f these cases by adding terms t the business glssary. Of curse, it is quite pssible that n term directly matches the reprt field by name. In this case, ne may define a direct semantic mapping frm a term in the business glssary t the field in the reprt. The advantage f this apprach is that ne may cntrl precisely what the preferred definitin will be versus the name matching methd. Als, it prvide a definitin, even thugh there may nt be a data flw trace that des nt cntain transfrmatins. Hence, it is the preferred methd fr fields fr which there is n equivalent in the warehuse r lake (i.e., calculated in the reprt) and there is n term r multiple terms that match by name. T summarize, there are three methds used t prvide an answer t a definitin lkup, applied in the fllwing rder: a. Direct semantic link frm a term in a business glssary b. Data flw lineage t the warehuse (r sme ther data stre in the physical architecture) and semantic up t a business glssary c. Name match between business glssary term and field name 1. Click n the area t the right f the Labels tag 3. Add a new label by typing it in (remember, each wrd is a separate label) 4. Assign already defined labels t this metadata element by typing ne r mre letters f that label and selecting frm the resulting pick list. 5. Unassign a label by simply deleting it. Search fr Label Assignments When searching in a mdel r cnfiguratin, ne may Filter the search results using the Filters panel t specific labels. Prvide feedback/cmments and review Cmments are free-frm text ntes which may be queried fr, reprted n, reviewed and managed by mdel. A cmment tracks its authr, creatin time, update time, imprtance and status. The user can attach any file including pictures and multimedia t the mdel and refer t them in a cmment. One can leave ne r mre cmment(s) per bject and see cmments made by thers. Unlike labels, cmments nly apply t the specific versin f the mdel they were entered in. The Business Glssary helps an enterprise t reach agreement between all stakehlders n their business assets (e.g. terms) and hw they relate t data assets (e.g. database tables) and technlgy assets (e.g. ETL mappings). The Business Glssary can be used t dcument lgical/physical data entities and attributes acrss IT cllabratively. Again, it invlves tracing dependencies between business and technical assets. The business glssary In Oracle Metadata Management (OMM), a business glssary is a self-cntained cllectin f categries and the terms sub-categries cntained within each categry.
