1 The University of Jordan Faculty: Business Department: Management Information Systems Semester: 1 st and 2 nd Academic Year: Each academic year Database Management Systems (2) [ ] Credit hours 3 Level Undergraduate Prerequisite Database Management Systems(1) [ ] Course Description While the subject of Database Management Systems (1) (DBMSs 1) [ ] covered many of the core concepts behind database management systems, there are many other considerations that should be addressed in the field of databases. This course will expand upon what was learned about SQL in DBMSs 1 and introduce various other advanced topics. This advanced module of information systems subjects provides the students with a deeper and broader view of the topic deals with implementation aspects of relational database systems. Through the subject, students will be gain the needed knowledge to model, plan, design, and implement a fully workable application using methods, tools, and concepts under Oracle environment, including PL/SQL, Oracle Forms, and Oracle Reports. Learning Objectives 1. Examine advanced concepts and issues in database modeling and design. 2. Develop further knowledge and experience about Structured Query Language (SQL). 3. Plan, analyze, design, and use a relational database objects under the Oracle environment. 4. Become familiar with Oracle development products, specifically SQL*Plus, PL/SQL, Oracle Developer Forms and Reports. 5. Gain practical experience through the design and implementation of a working project using Oracle development products. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): Successful completion of the course should lead to the following outcomes: A. Knowledge and Understanding: Student is expected to: A1- Demonstrate an understanding of advanced database concepts and principles; A2- Understand the creation of database models from the relational databases; and A3- Develop a working database application using Oracle DBMS software. 1 /5

Intellectual Analytical and Cognitive Skills: Student is expected to: B1- Be able to discuss the benefits offered by relational database management systems in many different business areas and issues associated with these technologies. C. Subject- Specific Skills: Students is expected to: C1- Be able to employ the gained knowledge in his or her life and through his or her professional carrier as part of building RDMSs projects; and C2- The deployment of technical skills in complex and changing databases and business environments. D. Transferable Key Skills: Students is expected to D1- The transferable/key skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied; D2- The exercise of initiative and personal responsibility in the world of business and computer databases; D3- The communication of advanced database concepts, ideas, problems, and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences; D4- The ability to undertake appropriate further training of databases professional practice or practices of equivalent nature (e.g., data warehouses); and D5- The ability to carry out an extended piece of databases projects related to business wants and needs. Learning Methodology The learning methodology in this subject is pillared on a blended learning strategy that relies on the following: Interactive classroom lectures and discussions; Student self-directed learning approach; Collaborative group-based activities; Laboratory exercises; Practical DBMS project implementation; and Evaluating exams. Projects and Assignments Each student, individually or as a group (3 students max), will be required to plan, analyze, design, develop, test, and implement a database application using Oracle DBMS software. The Database Implementation Project is one of the best ways to provide the student with the opportunity to practice and gain experience with DBMS tools, especially with the well-known Oracle development tools. The students, or the group, will discuss their project at the end of the semester. Discussion and marking for each project is expected to last for about 30 minutes. There will be a midterm exam and a final exam. Exams may cover anything, from the material provided to the students or from discussions raised earlier in the lectures. 3 /5

Main Reference/s: Documents will be provided by the lecturer throughout the lecture/lab times. The material will cover the theoretical and practical aspects of advanced Database Management Systems (DBMS) topics and issues in addition to an extensive laboratory exercises. Most of the material is attained from Oracle Technology Network and Oracle s Official Database Documentation library. References: Additional related material is assigned to students based on the selected business proposal for the implementation project. 4 /5
5 Intended Grading Scale (Optional) 0-39 F D D D C C C B B B A A Notes: Concerns or complaints should be expressed in the first instance to the module lecturer; if no resolution is forthcoming, then the issue should be brought to the attention of the module coordinator (for multiple sections) who will take the concerns to the module representative meeting. Thereafter, problems are dealt with by the Department Chair and if still unresolved the Dean and then ultimately the Vice President.
