5 Course Components Lectures cover the basic material for the course. Labs Tutorials and Lab Exercises complement the course and will be given during the scheduled lab hours. They contain information and exercises that are necessary to do the project. Lab exercises have to be done during the lab hours and will be marked by the TA in the lab. Assignments deepen your understanding of the course material through exercises. Project hands-on experience with a web-based database application. 6 Evaluation and Grading Component Weight Assignments 15% (3 assignments, 5% each) Lab Exercises 4% (2 exercises, 2% each) Mid-Term Examination 19% Project 24% Final Exam 38% A bell-shaped distribution will be applied to determine your final grade, i.e., your final grade will depend on the entire profile of the grades in your section. All appeals to marks, except to that of the final exam, must be registered with the instructor or TAs before the scheduled final examination starts. No re-examination, except as per regulation. 7 Code of Student Behaviour and Collaboration Plagiarism (work submitted by a student that is the work of another person), cheating, misrepresentation of facts and participation in such offences are viewed as serious academic offences by the University and by the Campus Law Review Committee (CLRC) of General Faculties Council. Sanctions for such offences can be as severe as expulsion from the University. Collaboration on Assignments and Lab Exercises You are encouraged to collaborate, form study groups and discuss assignments. However, each student must produce his/her own solution for assignments and lab exercises. Also, do not give machine-readable contents of your programs, or listings of any parts of the assignment answers to others so they can merely copy! 14 Course Objectives for CMPUT 391 To understand fundamental concepts and advanced technology underlying modern database systems expected from expert users and database administrators: Database Design / Normalization System issues such as Transactions, Concurrency Control, Crash Recovery, Query Optimization, etc. Support for special data types such as multimedia, spatial data, XML documents etc. Support for complex applications and data analysis such as Data Mining, Data Warehousing, Information Retrieval etc. To gain hands-on experience with a web-based database application system. 17 Course Project The objectives of the course project are to gain hands-on experience in design and implementation of Web-based information systems using technologies such as: ORACLE, Java, Servlets or JSP, JDBC, HTML forms, etc. Lab tutorials and lab exercises will introduce the basic technologies used to implement the project The topic of the project is a management information system using Online Analytical Processing for a fictive business.
