2 What is the data portal? The Asthma UK data portal is an interactive, digital platform that enables you to see the latest figures on asthma down to your local area, and where available, even down to your GP practice. You can find out how key indicators on asthma care and the impact of asthma on people s lives in your area compares to national levels, as well as how many people have asthma and the impact of asthma. The Asthma UK data portal is intended for everyone to use. It is a valuable resource for people with asthma, and of great value to researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals and commissioners. We have designed the portal with the aim of making it as intuitive and easy to use as possible, and have created this guide to help you get the most out of it. The Asthma UK data portal uses information from a range of sources. You can find further information about where the data is from and what it shows by clicking on the hyperlink for further info in the main text box of each page. Basic navigation The data portal contains a number of pages with different information on. You can navigate from page to page by clicking on the icon below, found in the top left-hand corner of the page: This provides a drop-down menu with a list of all the pages in the data portal. 2

3 Useful tips When navigating through the data portal, you will notice some recurring symbols on the pages. This section will explain how these will help you use the data portal. Gauges Gauges appear several times in the data portal. These are used to provide a comparison to the UK-wide figure for the data on the page. You can also see how the UK figure compares to the highest figure for any UK health area (CCG (England), Health Board (Scotland), Local Health Board (Wales) or Commissioning Group (NI)). This figure is represented by the black arrow, which is best viewed by expanding the gauge. The gauge and the black arrow changes when you select a different year. Maps Maps are a key way to present data in the data portal. Here are a few tips to help you get the best out of them. Each map is shaded on a gradient. The darker the gradient, the less desirable the data is. For instance, darker shading will indicate higher asthma prevalence. The range of shading is represented below the map. To zoom in on a map, use your mouse scroll wheel. Double click on the map to return to the original view of the whole of the UK. If you hover over an area on a map, information about the area and the data displayed (and any other relevant data) will appear. This is displayed below. 3

4 Where possible, data on a map interacts with the other charts on the page. This allows you to filter and view the data relevant to your requirements. In the example given below, the other objects on the page affect the data shown on the map. For instance, selecting the age range on the panel on the left will show the prevalence for that age range. Clicking on the gender selector on the top left will further filter the data that appears on the map. In the GP Practice data maps, there may be more than one GP practice registered at the same address. To see both values, zoom the map to the lowest level and move your cursor across the circle representing the practice to view the data. This is shown below: 4

5 In this case, two different practices are listed at the same address, and the details of both can be made visible. Drill down 5

6 This symbol indicates that you can drill down into the chart or map. This means the data has several different levels, and you can explore the data in finer detail. For instance, data for all of England may appear, and drilling down gives you the option of viewing data for English regions. You may also be able to drill down to different age bands on a pie chart. To do this, you need to double click on the data item, and the lower level will appear. To return to the previous level, use the level indicator (which will appear in the top left-hand corner of the data item) shown below: Clicking on the level desired (such as All Geography or England ) will allow you to return to that level. An alternative method of drilling down is by single clicking an area, and clicking on the drill option. This also allows you to see where the currently selected level fits in the hierarchy of data levels. The screenshot below illustrates this. Line graphs Line graphs appear several times in the data portal. The data that appears on these graphs is selectable by the lists and buttons around it. In the example below, the line graph can be selected by nation (top centre), condition (top centre right) and year (bottom). 6

7 Advanced tips to use the data portal in your work Maximising data You can make any element of the data portal full screen by clicking on the arrows symbol highlighted above. Exporting data We hope you find the data portal useful, and you wish to use the data in your own work. An easy way to do this is to export the data to an Excel spreadsheet. This would allow you to do your own analysis. To do this, click on the Export symbol (below). You can find this in the top right hand corner of a page. 7

8 After clicking on this icon, you will be presented with the screen below. Click on the Links button. After this, click on the External Link to download data text, and the data will automatically download. Referencing the data portal We hope you will find the data portal useful, and we encourage you to use in your work, campaigns or for your personal reference. All of the data sources used in the creation of the data portal are listed in the information window for each page and should be referred to if using the data. If you plan to use a graphic created in the data portal, data sourced from our analysis or text from the data portal, you need to reference it. We recommend you reference it in the following format: Asthma UK Data Portal. [Name of page source is from]. Accessed at Accessed on [date]. 8

10 FAQs Who is the data portal aimed for? The Asthma UK data portal is intended for everyone to use. We hope that those without experience of data visualisation will find it easy to use and find it informative. Will the data portal be updated? We aim to ensure the data portal is updated as soon as possible with the latest data published, or received by us via data requests. We will make a note of new data added to the data portal via a changelog. Why is some data presented differently to others? We have presented the data in a number of ways in the data portal. This is because each dataset has its own attributes, and using maps, for instance, may not be appropriate for some data sources. We have tried to present the data in the most informative and easy to understand manner for each dataset. This necessitates different ways in presenting the data. Why is some data missing for some nations? For the most part, data is collected separately for the four nations in the UK. Each nation collects and present data in a slightly different manner (for instance, using different age bands in health surveys), and we have attempted to ensure data is comparable across the UK. However, this is not always possible. There are several reasons for this: Some data is available, but is prohibitively expensive to acquire The data provided or available has not been of a high enough quality to provide real insight The data for this indicator is simply not collected in that nation, or may be collected but an asthma breakdown is not possible. 11 Why does some data only go back to 2012/13, and other data go back further? The health system in England underwent a series of organisational changes as a result of the Health and Social Care Act This established the CCGs and Area Teams used in the data portal. Data before this 2012/13 is not directly comparable, as different geographic areas were used, and representing this on a map would prove confusing. 11
