19 Outputting EDLs About the EDL Option Offline Editing Supported EDL Output Formats Video Edits Reported in EDLs Audio Edits Reported in EDLs Producing EDLs Viewing and Printing EDLs
Chapter 19 About the EDL Option Media 100 s EDL Option allows you to output standard-format EDLs from your programs. You can use EDLs when performing either online or offline editing. When you import EDLs and create programs directly from Media 100, you are using Media 100 as an online editing tool. Chapter 7, Importing EDLs, describes how to import EDLs into Media 100. When you use Media 100 to create an EDL of the program for final production at a post-production facility, you are performing offline editing. This chapter describes how to output EDLs from Media 100. Note: The features described in this chapter are available only if you have the EDL Option. Offline Editing If you are using a post-production facility (such as CMX, Sony, or Grass Valley) to produce your master videotape, you can create EDL files of your Media 100 program in the desired format. source cassettes (digitize at high compression rates) EDL (electronic & printed) Workprint (rough-cut video) Offline Editing WARNING! If you use Media 100 as an offline system and take the EDLs to a post-production facility, it is recommended that you use Media 100 as a cuts-only editor. EDLs may have difficulty representing many of the transition effects that you can create in a Media 100 program, and therefore they may be an imperfect transfer medium. In addition, the EDL Option does not support color effects or titling. 558
Outputting EDLs Supported EDL Output Formats You can create EDLs for your Media 100 programs using any of four industry-prevalent EDL formats: Grass Valley, CMX 3400, CMX 3600, and Sony BVE. Grass Valley CMX 3400 CMX 3600 Sony BVE This format allows four audio tracks and uses a sixcharacter (alphabetical or numerical) reel assignment. This format is limited to two audio tracks and refers to different reels of videotape by using reel number assignments from 001 through 253 (although a suffix of B can be added). This format allows four audio tracks and uses an eightcharacter (alphabetical or numerical) reel assignment. This format is limited to two audio tracks and uses reel assignments from 1 to 999. Note: Sample EDL on page 156 provides an example of a CMX 3600 EDL and EDL Contents on page 158 describes EDL file contents in detail. Video Edits Reported in EDLs An EDL output from Media 100 reports video edits as if it were writing the contents of the Media 100 V (video) track to tape. The V track represents either a cuts-only, single-track stream of video edits or a composite of edited clips present on virtual video tracks a and b, and transitional effects, if any, represented on virtual video track fx. Although many of the transitional effects available with Media 100 cannot be adequately described in an EDL, the name of the effect is always presented in a comment. Effect settings (for example, border width and softness) are typically not reported. 559
Chapter 19 Audio Edits Reported in EDLs Media 100 supports three options for specifying how audio edits are reported in an EDL. Regardless of the option selected, the audio is reported as if it were being recorded on tape in stereo (both channels enabled). Audio edits on tracks A1 and A2 always appear unless a respective track is disabled. Audio edits on tracks A3 and A4 are not reported unless tracks A1 and A2 are disabled. The three options are Audio Follows Video, Audio Separately, and Audio At End. Audio Follows Video This option essentially reports only video edits. Audio edits are assumed to occur at the same points as the video edits. Audio fade controls are not reported. Audio Separately Each video event is followed by the EDL interpretation of audio edits associated with that event point. The following rules govern how the EDL reports the audio edits. (Refer to Chapter 12, Working with Audio, for information about audio nodes and levels.) If a clip in track A1 completely overlaps a clip in track A2, only the track A1 clip is reported because track A2 is considered to be obscured. An overlap of clips on tracks A1 and A2 results in a transitional fade from the starting clip source to the ending clip source. Clips on tracks A3 and A4 are reported unless they are obscured by clips on tracks A1 and A2, or tracks A1 and A2 are disabled. Note: Fading down to 100 db (fully attenuated) in any audio clip effectively splits that clip at the fade-out node point. Rather than reporting audio that has no sound, the EDL reports the audio edit as two separate events. The EDL interprets audio level settings and fades as follows: An audio level of 0, or off, in any non-overlapping area between tracks A1 and A2 simulates the action of a switcher by creating a fade from full-off to full-on at the next nearest node point in the clip, regardless of the actual 560
Outputting EDLs value that was specified for the nonzero point. All other nonzero fade points are ignored. Level notes in the EDL associated with the event report the actual fade settings. Settings at nodes in areas of overlap between tracks A1 and A2 are not reported except in the level notes. Audio At End This option groups all audio edits at the end of the EDL. This option follows the same rules as the Audio Separately option (see page 560) in how it interprets which audio clips to report and how it reports fades and level settings. Producing EDLs Your Media 100 Program window must be open and active before you can produce an EDL record of the program. Also, your digitized media files must be online and recognized by the program. Perform the following steps to produce an EDL: 1. Choose Hardware Settings from the Edit menu. The Hardware Settings dialog box displays. 2. Select the desired EDL format from the EDL Type pop-up menu and click OK. Media 100 retains the selected EDL type (indicated by a bullet next to the menu item) until you either quit the application or choose another type. 561
Chapter Choose Print to EDL from the File menu. The Print to EDL dialog box displays. Note: For PAL programs, the frame rate is 25 FPS, and the Drop Frame checkbox is dimmed. 4. Choose the disk and folder in which the EDL is to be saved. 5. Enter the file name for the EDL. 6. Enter the representative title you want displayed in the header section of the EDL file. 7. Enter the starting timecode. You can use the Media 100 default starting timecode of one hour, zero minutes, zero seconds, and zero frames (01:00:00:00) for the program, or override it with your own starting timecode. 562
Outputting EDLs 8. (For NTSC programs only) Select drop frame or non-drop frame timecode. When the Drop Frame checkbox is checked, drop frame is enabled; when it is blank, non-drop frame is enabled. Media 100 recognizes drop frame or non-drop frame timecode in digitized NTSC source input material; however, you must use the checkbox to select whether the final program is to be output as drop frame or nondrop frame. Timecode in the EDL is presented in the appropriate format. 9. Choose the desired Audio Processing option from the pop-up menu. These options allow you to choose how audio edits in the program are reported in the EDL. (Refer to Audio Edits Reported in EDLs on page 560 for additional information.) Audio Follows Video essentially reports only video edits; audio edits are assumed to occur simultaneously with the video edit points. Audio Separately reports edits on video and audio tracks as separate edits at edit event points. Audio At End groups all audio edits at the end of the EDL. Note: The selected setting is not remembered between programs. Check that the setting is correct before you save the EDL. 10. Choose the desired Level Notes option from the pop-up menu. The Level Notes option refers to the settings established at node points in audio clips. 563
Chapter 19 None omits level-note audio and keying information from the EDL. (The term keys refers to superimposed video clips. Background keys are in the video track and are treated as video clips. Foreground keys are in the graphics (G) track. ) Audio Only includes audio edits and omits keying information. Keys Only includes keying information only. Audio and Keys includes both audio and keying information. Note: The selected setting is not remembered between programs. Check that the setting is correct before you save the EDL. 11. Click Save to save the EDL file. Viewing and Printing EDLs You can use any of the following methods to view and print EDLs: You can use Edl Pro, an EDL translation utility, to view and print the contents of EDL files. Edl Pro translates the structures of EDL files for input to CMX, Grass Valley, and Sony editing systems. The utility offers the following capabilities: It formats floppy disks for transferring EDL files to CMX or Grass Valley editing systems. (Sony editing systems require MS-DOS formatting.) It cross-translates a Sony, CMX, or Grass Valley EDL file structure from any one of these formats into any other of these formats. It translates an EDL file into a compatible file structure and then writes the file to a floppy disk or hard disk. It displays and prints the contents of any EDL file, including the binary format of Sony EDLs. Refer to the Edl Pro Edit Decision List Utility manual included with your Media 100 package for information on installing and using this program. 564
Outputting EDLs You can use a word processor or SimpleText to view and print CMX 3400, CMX 3600, and Grass Valley EDLs. (You cannot use this method with Sony BVE EDLs, as these are written in a binary format.) Take care not to introduce extraneous characters if you intend to use the EDL in an online editing suite. If you have Adobe Premiere, you can use its EDL capability to view and print the contents of an EDL. 565
