1 Limitations of the trial version? Posted by arpad.andrassy - 02 Jan :47 Hi, Just played around the last few days with version and after I successfully did an export(to avi), all the following attempts to export(the same project) are played back as static and noise (I didn't install or uninstall any codecs in the meantime). I tried many export options but the result is the same. Is there a limitation in the number of exports? Another question: recorded video clips of the same device(phone) appear with different fps's on the import list, without any change of settings: 29.7 fps,25fps, 48hz, etc. How can this be? I like workflow of ligthworks, overall seems intuitive to me, but there are such "small" things that make not much sense. You may have accidentally changed something in your export settings, it seems odd to me, maybe some others have some suggestions on how to fix your problem. Some new phones these days will record with varying frame rates. About the small things that don't make much sense, Just remember, Lightworks operates very differently from traditional windows programs. Take your time to learn Lightworks, the little will make a lot more sense once you really figure out what is going on in the program. 2 I know that the iphone uses variable frame rates (don't ask me why). You could try importing into a 24 fps project which is the only Lightworks project type that can handle footage with different frame rates. Basically what I want to do is use the VOB files from my crappy Sony cam (writes on minidisc), edit and export them in a more friendly format. Lightworks seemed to be the answer but I'm having lots of problems: - no audio was imported as the source file was in Dolby Digital, but somehow solved it with the AC3 filter (btw is there a way to add all 6 audio channels into the editor?); (unsolved) -an issue I see in Lightworks, the imported VOB image and sound are not in sync, sound seems to lag around half a second. - Export to AVI is not working for me. Video seems fine in Lightworks but the exported file is noise and static (all video players show error of video). - export to AVCHD. is giving bad results, deinterlaced(jagged) image and the sound lag issue is there -export to AVCHD.mov gets rid of deinterlace but sound is still not in sync. 2 / 10

Thanks again Posted by shaunthesheep - 05 Jan :37 You can set 6 channel audio import in the AC3Filter Config preferences. The default settings in: Start > Programs > AC3 Filter > AC3Filter Config > Main tab > Output Format is 2 channel stereo audio. Change it to 6 channel or 5.1 surround. Alternatively, you could register for the latest Lightworks v11.5 Beta which has AC-3 audio support built in without the need for the third party filter. You don't need to uninstall the Lightworks v release version as long as you install the Beta into a different installation directory. Is your source footage interlaced or progressive scan? If you are unsure, use MediaInfo to analyse the source file. See this post for instructions. If you are using progressive scan footage, select "optimise for frames" in the Export Tool options. I had some problems with some codecs of VLC that I didn't have before, but it was not Lightworks the problem. I wanted to ask you if it's worth upgrading to HD for family stuff. It looks good, but won't editing be a pain with those huge files conversions, extra costs with extra need for storage etc? Most of my TV programmes are still broadcast in SD and half the time I can't tell the difference between them and the ones shot in HD. I think that might have something to do with modern LED TVs converting interlaced footage into progressive scan on the fly. I suppose it depends on your existing hardware. If you have an old XP era computer it will probably have to be replaced to manage HD. The minimum and recommended hardware specification is listed here. I am not a hardware expert but if you do go for a new computer, a 64 bit system, as good an NVidia graphics card as you can afford (with 1-2 GB of its own dedicated ram), an SSD system drive and 10,000 rpm media drive(s) along with plenty of ram (12+ GB) would definitely help. Alternatively, if you already have a reasonably modern computer, you should be OK. Mine is a 3 year old office-type Dell desktop with far from cutting edge hardware and I manage HD OK. Lightworks has improved its performance significantly with playback of AVCHD files. HDD storage is relatively cheap so I don't think that would be a problem. You can get a 1 TB external drive for $US75 and the prices are coming down all the time. 4 / 10

Why I asked the quesiton, is that I tried on my desktop to edit some footage from an HD camera I'm thinking of buying: Panasonic HC v720(i'm not sure about it though) My PC specs: Intel E8500 Dual Core 3.16 Ghz, Vista 64, 4gb RAM, Vide Card Asus Nvidia GeFOrce 650GTX I downloaded 3 samples off the net of under 1 minute each (.mts format at 50fps), imported them in lightworks and wasn't even able to play them properly. Only after converting to 25fps.mp4 I was able to start using them, but even then, it is was pain to edit properly. Did I miss some steps in the process, I have to convert to very low res and then use the project edit on the full size files? If the case how longer will this take compared to the SD files I'm using now? Thank you. Arpad Posted by shaunthesheep - 10 Jan :55 Can you provide a MediaInfo report of the MTS files you downloaded? See this post for instructions. Coming from a professional film and broadcast background, Lightworks "expects" footage to adhere to standards and it can be very choosy about what it imports. Clips from the Web may not adhere to these standards. 5 / 10

6 A duel core CPU is at the lower end of the hardware required for HD files and might struggle to play them. Ideally you would upgrade to an i7 CPU based computer. But Eyeframe Converter was specifically designed for low spec computers to use a proxy workflow for HD. It is a more time consuming workflow. I am guessing that 25 fps (which I use) is easier on the hardware than 50 fps. Try to find some 25 fps MTS files and test them. EDIT See this page for some HD 25i MTS and MP4 samples. I am just doing some testing on my machine. On the above page there is an MTS 50p Panasonic file which my machine (Core 2 Quad CPU) struggles to play. It does play but NOT smoothly. It plays with a regular skip or jerk. Jump, jump, jump, jump. My camera writes to 1080i MTS files which play smoothly in Lightworks. I am happy with the quality they produce. But if you want to edit progressive files you may need to upgrade your PC. MY iphone files are 30p and play somewhat less smoothly in Lightworks than my 25i MTS files but I find it tolerable. Conclusion: with your CPU you may find that 25i MTS or MP4 rather than progressive files play best. If you don't want to upgrade your PC, you might want to bear that in mind if you purchase an HD camera. Progressive files obviously will be better quality than interlaced if you want an arty look. HDSLR cameras generally write to progressive scan and as you may be aware they are very popular because of the optics which enable a cinematic look with the possibility of a shallow depth of field etc. But you would need a more modern computer ideally with an i7 CPU. 7 Thank you shaun, sorry for reacting so late. Yes, seems that the interlaced/progressive has a big impact on performance. My only issue was that I was thinking of buying a Panasonic camera (HC v720) that has only progressive, so I have to reconsider because upgrading the PC is not an option for me right now. So, I guess sticking with SD is the most confortable option at this stage. I wouldn't mind the resolution of my current SD camera, but being a mini DVD one, it is also writing a lossy version on the DVD even at the high quality setting, causing this typical pixelation due to compression, during the fast moving images.
