1 How to import, edit, AVI files? Posted by curmudgeon66-02 Dec :33 Running Windows 7 64bit on HPE-450t, Intel core i7 CPU 870, ATI Radeon HD 5570 video card. The install appears to have gone just fine. I can go into Lightworks. I can create project, although I don't know if the default project values are what I should be using, but that always seems like a good starting place. I can not "import" or open up any of the AVI files that I want to edit. I have a Nikon D90 digital camera which creates video files as AVI files, at 24 fps. and has audio bit rate of 176 kbps mono. How do I import or use these files as the starting point for a project. The PDF manual says that Lightworks imports the video (only?) of avi files, but I can't figure out how. Please advise. The user interface looks good, the specs say this should do a fantastic job. But I can't figure out how to use it. Curmudgeon Posted by IsDonIsBest - 02 Dec :07 hmm. best thing i can think of is the default project settings won't match 24 fps - maybe try making a video only project and import video only, with 24 fps set anywhere you can see it? I tried opening the same file in premiere and it also fails and has a green matte with no audio. I fear it's the same problem as trying to edit any other video shot from a digital camera, there's just no codec that really does it in higher end programs. Spent forever trying to figure out a way to edit h264 natively and found myself running in circles. Was gonna try an updated klite install when I get internet Posted by Lafey - 02 Dec :29 Hello. well i have similar problem with lightworks and avi files recorded on nikon D90. first i created new project with 25 fps and failed to import avi, then i created again a new project with 24 fps and i import without problem my record.. well that what i thought..when i tried preview the avi ive got black screen and audio running. i don't know wheres the problem.. ive instal recomended matrox codecs. Im running win7_64 and no other codecs instaled on system - so maybe my problem is in lack of codecs.. or in creation project? avi is 720p and in creation of a project 720p has 50fps.. so i chose only 24 (sory right now im at work and i cant check) Posted by JamesBrown - 02 Dec :04 Hello from Germany, I have the same problem with any media-files. I can't import AVI, MOV or mpeg files. When I choose the filefolder after pressing the import button the folder shows no mediafiles although the folder is full of avi and mpeg files. My system is Win 7 Prof. 64bit. An I have also installed the Matrox VFW codec pack. Maybe we get help from someone 2 / 7

3 Greetings Frank Posted by Hammerhead - 02 Dec :16 If you click on the cogs icon on the import panel, do you have 'Only show metadata files' set to 'true'? If so, you need change that to false. The new patch (see Announcements) also fixes this. Posted by beorn - 02 Dec :28 I have the same issue (mine is a Nikon D5000). It uses the motion jpeg codec, which apparently LW doesn't like. They don't preview, and when you import them, they come in with only sound and no picture. Converting to h264 quicktimes via quicktime pro works, and I'm told using avisynth also works, but it would be great if you could just import files directly from the camera. I'll check some Nikon example files from the internet later. Make sure that: - You got Quicktime installed (check the install guide) - The frame rate of your project is the same as the frame rate of the videos. 4 / 7

5 In the import window (after you selected the files) if something's in red, it means there is an error (for example if the frame rates don't match, 30fps will be displayed in red) [edit] all right, I see that the D5000 makes AVI files, not MOVs. I'll still check it at home. Anyway, no need to worry, LW can handle HD MJPEG files, it just needs a good codec (I'm pretty sure it will be added later). Posted by beorn - 02 Dec 2010 basically the deal with the D5000 is that it makes 24fps 720p MJPEG AVIs. These files play fine in quicktime, (as well as VLC and WMP). Obviously LW doesn't use quicktime to handle AVIs, which is unfortunate, because I've found so far that using quicktime files in LW is the most stable and crash free way to go. Sure enough, when I use QT pro to convert them LW reads them with no worries. I guess that being new to the open source scene they haven't started to leverage from other FOSS projects like ffmpeg. I sure hope they figure this out soon, as more and more people start shooting on DSLRs and other equipment that uses various wrappers and codecs. J'ai fait la même chose et je vois les répertoires mais pas les fichiers je suis désolé je ne parle pas anglais, j'utilise google pour traduire Par contre la capture fonctionne I made the same thing(matter) and I see directories but not files I am sorry I do not speak English, I use Google to translate On the other hand the capture works cordialement Jacques Posted by kbarni - 02 Dec :16 Yep, I confirm too: while LW can decode MJPEG videos in MOV format, it can't decode them if they are in AVI format. Maybe installing other codecs will help? ( read this : it seems the H264 encoded files can be opened after installing the Xvid codecs) 6 / 7
