You cannot use the Animation Key button to remove animation on a clip, track, or timeline effect when there are expressions in that effect.

1 Avid DS 11.1 Known Issues and Limitations This section provides information on known limitations that were not addressed in this release. Any available workaround procedures are also documented, when possible. Animation CANNOT REMOVE ANIMATION ON AN EFFECT USING EXPRESSIONS You cannot use the Animation Key button to remove animation on a clip, track, or timeline effect when there are expressions in that effect. TRACKER ANIMATION PROCESSED IN FIELDS The tracker animation of fast-moving objects may break intermittently when processed in fields. Workaround: Process the tracker animation in frames. Audio TIMELINE TO MC MONO AUDIO TRACKS DO NOT ALLOW RELINK TO MEDIA If you export your tracks to AAF using the Timeline to MC option in Avid DS, and you have mono audio tracks in the timeline, Media Composer will not be able to relink to this audio media. If you must use mono tracks, then you will need to manually move the MXF files from where they were created to an indexed folder such as \Avid MediaFiles\MXF. 1

2 Avid Interplay INTERPLAY ACCESS LICENSE AND AVID DS When Avid DS is started in an Interplay environment, it also consumes one Interplay Access license for as long as Avid DS is running. AVID DS ON INTERPLAY - TIMELINE CONFORM IS SLOWER When Avid DS is within an Interplay environment, the timeline conform may be slower when you conform within a sequence that does not have the same compression setting as the AFE's sequence. MEDIA COMPOSER SOFTWARE NOT SUPPORTED WITH INTERPLAY Media Composer Software is not supported on Avid DS systems that are participating in an Interplay environment. This is because the Interplay Media Indexer cannot be installed on the Avid DS system as it conflicts with the Avid DS Media Indexer. Media Composer can still be used but it must be installed on a separate workstation. CAN ONLY PLAYBACK AIRSPEED HD MEDIA IN REALTIME WITH INTERPLAY v1.6 Avid DS v or later can only play Airspeed DNX HD media in realtime if using the Interplay Media Indexer v1.6 or later. Avid Unity ISIS PLAYBACK OF 1080p59 DNx90 MAY DROP FRAMES WITH 1GB CONNECTION TO AVID ISIS. For a 1GB connection to Avid ISIS with a broadcom card, playback of 1080p59 DNx90 video may drop frames. HD CAPTURE AND PLAYBACK For a single connection to Avid Unity ISIS, only compressed HD capture and playback is supported. If the sequence is set to uncompressed, any ISIS video media will appear as non real-time playable. 10GB connections can playback sequences in real-time. CAPTURE INTERRUPTION On remote storages, ISIS capture in 720p 59 might be interrupted after a few minutes (message displayed is "Hardware overrun error"). Workaround: Disable the viewer (little "grid" button at the bottom right of the right-hand screen). This will give the workstation the necessary processing bandwidth to achieve a capture. 2

3 Color Management COLOR MANAGEMENT COMPATIBILITY ISSUES BETWEEN AVID DS 8.4 AND 10.x OR LATER For 4:4:4 sequences, the media captured in Avid DS version 8.4 may not show the same colors when used in version 10.x. If you have an HD RGB sequence in version 8.4, you can restore it in version 10.x. The color management functionality will be partially disabled to make the captured media compatible. You will need to go to Viewer Properties and disable the viewer LUT, for the viewer to show the same colors displayed in version 8.4. The media captured in version 8.4 can only be used in the restored sequence, and not in a new sequence. If you restored a sequence from version 8.4 in version 10.x, and need to recapture the media, create a new sequence using the default LUT. Drag and drop the old sequence into it, and then delete the old sequence. During the recapture process, select Recapture with Options and use the Capture Tool LUT, instead of the master clip LUT. This will ensure that the correct LUT is used when recapturing from tape. NOTE: Contact customer support if you require help with the upgrade and project conversion. Web Support: COLOR WHEEL CHROMA REGION RESET In the Secondary Property Page of a color correction, if you match a color and then click between the Colorwheel and the Vectorscope buttons, the Chroma region will return to where it was before the color match. Compositing VIEWER SHOWS A BLANK SCREEN WHEN EXITING A COMPOSITE CONTAINER Exiting a composite container while the DVE is in view mode may cause the viewer to show a blank screen. Workaround: Reopen the container and exit again. 3

4 Conform SEQUENCES WITH MIXED FRAME RATES NOT FULLY SUPPORTED FOR FILE-BASED MEDIA Conforming sequences with file-based media that do not match the sequence frame rate, will lead to unpredictable results. In this case, you will need to create a new sequence in Avid DS and recapture all the clips at the same frame rate. CONFORMING AAF/AFE/EDL WITH ALTERNATE SOURCE ERROR If you are conforming an AAF/AFE/EDL with the alternate source pointing to a DPX folder where the pattern of a series of the DPX files does not fit the span of the timecode, you will receive an error. For example, if the name of the first file is test1.dpx with a head and tail of 10 frames. Workaround: Use a third-party tool to rename the file(s) to match the span of the timecode. For example, rename the file mentioned above to test10.dpx. CONFORMING XDCAM WITH DROP FRAME MATERIAL When conforming XDCAM drop frame material, Avid DS will convert the media to non-drop frame, which may cause an incorrect conform of the sequence, and the media to be offline. AVID DS CANNOT READ P2 AVCIntra MEDIA IMPORTED AND CONSOLIDATED BY MEDIA COMPOSER MXF files with AVCIntra compression, that are created by Avid Media Composer will not relink in Avid DS. Workaround: When conforming AAF containing AVCIntra clips, configure the storage to point directly to the native P2 card media, and not to the MXF files created by Avid Media Composer. SUBCAP AND TIMECODE BURN-IN EFFECTS WILL NOT CONFORM IN AVID DS The two effects in Media Composer located under generator, respectively named SubCap and Timecode Burn-in will not conform in Avid DS. Workaround: For SubCap, export the effect from Media Composer using File of Type "Avid DS Caption File". On Avid DS, import the file using the standard procedure for importing subtitles. You will need to browse to the location where you exported the file. MULTI-CHANNEL CONFORM When conforming projects with multiple audio channels (stereo) from Media Composer 5, you should create a new user to obtain the new default template settings for the user preferences. AVID DS DOES NOT RELINK TO SPANNED MXF MEDIA FILES Sequences conformed from Media Composer 5 may have difficulty relinking to clips that have split MXF media files--only the first part of the clip relinks to the first mxf file, and the second is ignored. 4

5 Effects 3D DVE PARAMETERS ON PAGE CURL ARE NOT DISPLAYED When applying a 3D DVE effect to a clip, the parameters on the Page Curl page are not displayed. NVIDIA QUADRO FX 3700 DOES NOT PROPERLY HANDLE SOME 3D DVE EFFECTS You may notice some unwanted artifacts when you use 3D DVE effects on an Avid DS system that uses the NVIDIA Quadro FX These same effects have been tested with an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800, and found to work correctly. PRECAUTIONS WHEN PROMOTING AN AVX1 TO AN AVX2 When reloading sequences with AVX1 effects from a previous version of Avid DS, Ensure that all AVX1 effects are installed on the new system before trying to promote the effects from AVX1 to AVX2. Failure to have the AVX1 effects installed will cause the animations to be lost. 5

6 Installation and Configuration KNOWN ISSUES WITH QUICKTIME CODECS Please refer to the Avid DS Support Site for a list of qualified codecs because certain QuickTime codecs do not work correctly with Avid DS. If non-qualified codecs are required, Avid recommends archiving your previous projects and testing the codecs before starting a new project. USING THE AVID DS ARTIST COLOR CONTROLLER IN AN INTERPLAY ENVIRONMENT When using Avid DS with the Avid Artist Color controller in an Interplay environment, you will get the message that the "Remote procedure call failed" when you try to connect to an Interplay Media Indexer. This is due to contention with the Euphonix/Eucon software that was previously installed. This typically occurs when you have an existing Color or Transport installation for Media Composer. Make sure that you follow these steps in order to properly configure the shared controllers in an Interplay environment: 1. Stop all Eucon applications and services (there are 3, and they can all be stopped by right-clicking their icons in the Windows taskbar). 2. Unplug the device (both the power cord, and the Ethernet cable). 3. Restart the DS services (Service Location Protocol, Media Indexer, Project Indexer). 4. If required, run the DS Workgroup Configuration tool in order to join a DS Workgroup (any existing workgroups will now display properly). 5. Launch Avid DS to configure its storages (it will now be possible to add an Interplay media indexer, and/or any desired DS media indexer from workstations that are on the same workgroup as this workstation). 6. Quit Avid DS. 7. Plug in the Eucon device (power cord and Ethernet) and turn it on. 8. Start up the Eucon application (from Start Menu > EuControl, pick the EuControl shortcut icon). 9. Launch DS. NOTE: You will be able to add storages if needed after this point, but if you remove an Interplay media indexer from the list, you won t be able to add it back. INSTALL AVID ARTIST TRANSPORT CONTROLLER WITH AVID DS SETUP Please install the Avid Artist Transport Controller with a complete Avid DS setup. If you only modify the setup to include the Avid Artist Transport, it will not enable all transport functionalities. CANNOT LICENSE AND START AVID DS TRAINING EDITION The Avid DS Training Edition writes projects, presets, and users preferences as encrypted data that is not compatible with a licensed Avid DS. Follow the instructions on the Avid DS Support Center (see Troubleshooting section) to prepare your system for a licensed application. AJA DEVICE SERVICE (FROM DRIVER ) BREAKS AUDIO AND VIEWER INPUT WHEN IN CAPTURE MODE Avid recommends that you disable the AJA Device Service when running Avid DS. Please refer to the instructions and batch files in the AJA section of the application DVD, or the Avid DS Support Center. 6

7 Media Input & Output CAPTURE OF QUICKTIME FILES WITH AVID DNxHD CODEC MAY PRODUCE PICTURE ARTIFACTS When you capture QuickTime files using the Avid DNxHD codec in Video Levels mode, it may produce picture artifacts in Avid DS. The high pixels levels in YCC produce illegal RGB pixels which appear as blue dots and picture artifacts. The workaround is to convert the QuickTime file using RGB Levels instead. Workaround : - Use the application of your choice to convert the Quicktime file with the Avid DNxHD codec. Use the RGB Levels option. - Capture the converted QuickTime file in AVID DS. CAPTURING OR LOGGING A GROUP OF NON-SEQUENTIAL FILES You can log, link or capture a sequence of files based on the contents of a Group folder. However, if any of the files within the sequence are missing (i.e. there are non-consecutive numbers on the files), then the operation will not work if you choose to create individual clips for each of the files in the sequence. Workaround: You must open the group folder, select all the files, and then right-click to select capture, log or link. DO NOT USE MAIN EXPLORER LOCATION AS CAPTURE TARGET When capturing from file, if you choose the Capture Target setting as "Main Explorer Location", you will get an error message that a valid folder is not selected. Please choose any other folder to avoid this error. BACKWARDS COMPATABILITY ISSUE WITH RED FILES Avid DS uses the RED specifications and the gamma curve to color correct RED files. This results in more accurate color corrections, but means that linked clips from.r3d files created in previous versions will have their color components modified. There is no workaround for this. It is strongly advised to finish current projects using.r3d files before upgrading. AVID DS IN GL MODE DROPS FRAMES ON FIRST PLAYBACK When you are running Avid DS in the GL mode, there are some cases where the first playback performed upon opening a sequence may result in a few dropped frames. All subsequence playbacks work correctly. VIDEO ISSUES WHEN USING AVID UNITY Any 720p 10-bit uncompressed media captured to Avid Unity will be invalid. The image will shift horizontally across the viewer. Workaround: Switch to a different bit depth or compression. LEGACY GRAPHICS OPTION IN RGB SEQUENCE PRODUCES INCORRECT COLORS Using the Legacy Graphics option in the Output Tool in an RGB sequence will produce incorrect color levels. Workaround: Open or create a YUV sequence. 7

8 Media Input & Output CANNOT OUTPUT WMV FILES WITH VARIABLE BIT RATE SETTINGS If you use variable bit rate settings when outputting a.wmv file, the file will not be created on output. To be able to work with WMV files, you need the Microsoft Expression Encoder. Please see the Avid Knowledge Base for an article that provides these details. Note that Avid DS only supports constant bit rate (cbr). TIMELINE TO MC EXPORT WITH AUDIO WITH DS MIXER NOT FUNCTIONING Exporting the timeline to MC with audio when the audio in the mixer is set from 5.1 to 8 tracks will not be successful. Workaround: Set the Avid DS Mixer to Mono, Stereo, LCRS, or Quad. ACCURACY PROBLEMS IN 720P SEQUENCES You may experience accuracy problems when working with captured clips in 720p sequences. The captured clips may start one frame early. FRAME DELAY ON SD DOWNCONVERT On 1080 project types using uncompressed HD and DNXHD 10-bit, there is always a 1 frame delay on tape when doing an SD Downconvert. This is a problem due to delayed processing on the AJA card. As a result, the downconvert output will play 1 frame later than the HD SDI output. The embedded audio is nonetheless in sync with the video. 8

9 Media Management RECAPTURE ABORTS WHEN FILE IS MOVED The recapture process may abort when a file has been moved from its original location. You will get an error message instead of a floating DS browser. Workaround: Try again in a few minutes or restart the workstation. THE CLIP ICON IN THE AVID EXPLORER MAY NOT REFRESH AUTOMATICALLY The clip icon in the Avid Explorer may not refresh automatically after recapturing or purging media. Workaround: Perform one of the following: - Press F5 to refresh the bin. - Switch to another view, then return to the Details view. - Switch to another folder, then return to your project bin. CONFIGURING STORAGES AND NON-PURGEABLE OPTION PROBLEM Adding a non-purgeable storage may clear the Capture To drop-down list in the capture settings. Workaround: Select an available storage from the drop-down list. REINDEXING REQUIRED AFTER WORKSTATION REBOOT After a workstation reboot, the project indexer may need to rescan and reindex all the projects. Note that this operation could take some time. Workaround: Offload this process to a separate indexing machine to free up your Avid DS workstation. RECAPTURE FUNCTIONS NOT PERMISSABLE IF A CLIP IS IN THE SOURCE VIEWER If you drag a clip into the source viewer and then drag that same clip to the timeline without clearing the source viewer, you will not be able to perform any media management operations. For example, if you select the clip on the timeline and click Recapture Timeline Selection, the recapture list will not display. Similarly, if you do a Recapture entire Timeline, you'll get a "Nothing to catpure" error message. 9

10 Other ARCHIVE FAILURE Some rare occurences have been reported on previous version archives where some restored clips display a big red X. There is currently no solution to this problem. PROCESS EFFECTS BEFORE OUTPUT Avid DS does not guarantee fluid output of potentially real-time effects (i.e. any effects showing a yellow ribbon on the timeline). Therefore, before you output your sequence, process all non real-time effects and software real-time effects to guarantee that no frames are skipped. Refer to the section on Processing Effects in the Help. RETRIEVING ORIGINAL RGB 4:4:4 SIGNAL To get the original RGB 4:4:4 signal back once it has been converted, the SD downconvert must be disabled (set to none). AVID DS RP REMOVES USERS PREFERENCES When you run Avid DS RP on an Avis DS system and then go back to running Avid DS, the user preferences are cleared. To get the user preferences back, use the Restore Default Layout option. SYNC SOURCE LIGHT DOES NOT UPDATE IN PASSTHROUGH MODE When you are in passthrough mode, after the output starts and the sync switches to external, the Sync Source light (S light) does not update. REMOTE DESKTOP CONNECTION MAY INTERRUPT GRAPHIC COMMANDS Connecting remotely to an Avid DS machine may invalidate some DS functions and commands. RECORD-SIDE TRACK PATCHING NEEDS TO BE ENABLED The status of the tracks in the source-side view are not taken into account upon drag and drop operations to the timeline. Workaround: Use the Insert Clip shortcut (V) or the button underneath the viewer. 10

11 Workgroup CACHES NOT RELINKING WHEN PROJECT IS MOVED When you move a project from one workgroup to another, the caches may not link properly to the new location. Workaround: Open the Configure Storage tool, and select the appropriate media indexing service for your project. Then click Change and OK to exit the Configure Storage tool. This action resets the service and the caches reconnect to the sequence. USING AVID ARTIST CONTROLLERS IN AN AVID DS WORKGROUP You will not be able to configure an Avid DS worstation within an Avid DS workgroup if the Artist controller is already connected and running. You must first stop the Eucon services and application, then disconnect the controller and restart the Avid DS configuration to connect the workstation to the workgroup. Once the Avid DS workstation configuration is complete, you can then connect the contoller to the workstation and restart its services. To stop the Eucon services and applications (there are 3 running) : - Right-click on their icons in the notification area of the windows taskbar, and select quit, one by one. To restart the services once the controller is hooked up again after configuration, use the option from the Start menu, 11
