3 Introduction In this manual you will find the instructions for the installation, connection and use of dynamic lighting LED fixtures featuring the TARGETTI LUCEVIVA technology. These products allow to modify the colour of light through the additive colour mixing process of the three primary colours (Red, Green, Blue), better known as RGB, and they are named intelligent fixtures because they are equipped with electronics for power supply and for the RGB process control. The main features of LUCEVIVA technology, applied to LEDs, are the following: - PWM technology (Pulse Width Modulation) used for controlling the intensity of the 3 colours by switching LEDs on and off sequentially, at a rate that is higher than what human eye can perceive (nearly 200 Hz); perceived intensity is proportional to the difference between the time when the LED is turned on and off. - 8-bit resolution for colour intensity control, corresponding to 256 steps and 16,7 millions of colours that can be obtained by synthesis. - Easy-Run-Menu function allowing the selection of a colour sequence (show) among the 16 that are stored in the fixture s memory with 5 different playback speeds. - DMX input socket for programming and controlling the fixture through any external DMX 512 (USITT 1990) compatible device (controller or recorder). - DMX output socket for a daisy-chain connection to other DMX fixtures - Master/Slave configuration with other fixtures connected to the DMX output - Wireless synchronization of the show replayed by a group of fixtures, provided that: all units include the LUCEVIVA technology, all are connected to the same power line and can be switched on/off simultaneously, the same show and the same playback speed are selected on all of them (in this case the synchronization is granted by the internal quartz). The first part of this manual provides instructions that are common to all intelligent products in the series. 4 Basic instructions for using the dip-switches LUCEVIVA intelligent fixtures have different functioning modes which can be selected by the user by using the dip-switches included in each product. IMPORTANT NOTICE Always read carefully, in the pages dedicated to each fixture, the instructions on how to open the body for having access to the dip-switches. In this instruction manual, the ON (1) position is conventionally meant to be the up position of the dip-switch and the OFF (0) the down position. DMX operating mode (DMX/Slave) See next section for additional information regarding the DMX protocol. In this mode the operation of the fixture is controlled by an external DMX controller or recorder. Each fixture must have a DMX address and it is controlled by three DMX channels (R-G-B). The DMX connections for each specific fixture must be done as explained in the dedicated sections hereafter. Dip-switches position in the DMX/Slave mode: Dip switch 12 of DIP2: Dip-switch 2 of DIP1 : Dip-switch 3 of DIP1 : OFF OFF ON Any component that has to function as an independent unit inside the system controlled by the external DMX device must receive its own DMX address. The address can be set via the dip-switches of the DIP2 Group. The resulting ON/OFF sequence is a series of 1 and 0 that corresponds to a binary number. The reference table in the next pages allows to associate each single binary configuration of the nine dip-switches to the correspondent number between 1 and 511. Note: the DMX channel 1 is selected both by setting the binary number 0 and the binary number 1 (the DMX channel zero doesn t exist). Finally, insert the DMX line termination resistor by positioning the dip-switch 4 of DIP1 Group ON, each time the fixture is the last one of a DMX line or DMX line section. A DMX line consists of a group of fixtures wired in daisy-chain. The line begins at the output socket of an external User s manual

6 controller (or at the output socket of a splitter) and ends at the last connected fixture. A DMX line section is the part of a DMX line included between two Buffers. DMX wiring quality can be monitored through the red LED indicator D2 placed near the dipswitches: - If the LED is OFF, there is no incoming DMX signal - If the LED is blinking the DMX signal is good - If the LED flashes twice only, the DMX cable is inverted or the connection is wrong Example 1 DMX mode, DMX address 1 with no termination resistor inserted. In this operating mode the Easy-Run-Menu function is used, allowing the automatic playback of one of the many colour changing sequences (shows) already stored in the fixture s memory. The show can be selected by setting the switches of the DIP2 Group. The show playback speed is set via the dip-switches of the same DP2 Group. The DMX data signal corresponding to the show that is presently replayed is sent also to the DMX-OUT socket; therefore the fixture will take control, as a Master unit, of any DMX device which is connected to this output. 8 In the Stand-Alone/Master operating mode, when the lighting system consists exclusively of fixtures featuring the LUCEVIVA Easy-Run-Menu function, the system synchronization is possible even with no DMX data wiring. At this purpose all units must be connected to the same power line and the same show/speed have to be set on all units. In such a case the synchronization is provided by the internal quartz. 9 About the DMX 512 protocol and DMX connections LUCEVIVA lighting fixtures can be controlled by external control devices using the DMX 512 protocol (like the Targetti My-Scenario package). DMX 512 is a universal protocol introduced in 1986 by USITT (U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology) and improved in It offers many advantages, due to the fact that a huge quantity of data pass through a single cable. DMX programming, used to create colour changing sequences and shows, offers the following advantages: Any DMX fixture can be included in the lighting system, even those of other lighting manufacturers and even those featuring very complex functions (moving-lights, for instance). It allows complete freedom to creativity. Every fixture, if necessary, can be individually programmed and controlled. DMX address When using the DMX protocol, every lighting fixture must be identified by one digital address, which can be set using the dip-switches included in the fixture. The DMX address is also named base channel, as it corresponds to the number of the first control channel dedicated to the control the lighting fixture. For every intelligent LUCEVIVA lighting fixture the digital address is a number between 1 and 511. It can be set through the dip-switches 1-9 of the SW2 group. Each ON/OFF sequence can be considered as a 1/0 string, i.e. as a binary number. The enclosed table allows to associate each binary configuration of the nine dip-switches to the only corresponding number between 1 and 511. DMX cables A DMX control data system consists of a serial daisy-chain wiring where the control cable exits from the DMX output of one fixture, enters in the DMX input of the following fixture and so on. For the connection it is necessary to use a special cable, specified for EIA RS485, specifically designed for the data transmission at 250 Kb/s. The recommended cable is a one twisted pairs shielded cable and has the following electrical features: Nom. Impedance 120 Ohms Nom. Conductor to Conductor 1 KHz 12.8 pf/ft Nom. A reference on the market may be the Belden The shield should be used (connecting it to the GND terminal) only when the wiring length between fixtures is longer than 50 m: in this case, it is recommended to connect the shield only at the beginning of the line section (DMX OUT). It is better not to connect the shield on both sides of the wiring User s manual

10 Length of a DMX line and DMX amplification The maximum distance of the last fixture from the DMX signal emitting source (where the DMX signal is generated or extended) must not exceed 100 m. Almost all the LUCEVIVA intelligent fixtures include a buffer on the DMX output which regenerates the DMX signal before sending it to the next fixture; with this buffer it is possible to extend the transmission distance. In the following pages of this manual which refer to these specific products, two different possible connections for the DMX output cable are shown: (A) connection to the amplified DMX-OUT output; (B) parallel connection to the DMX-IN connector, without amplification. The criteria for deciding which kind of connection has be used are the following: 1) The maximum number of intelligent fixtures (or Secs 75) connected in a daisy-chain, on which the internal buffer can be used is 20. Each time there is a buffer, the DMX line section ends and a new line section begins. 2) Within a DMX line section the maximum number of fixtures connectable without using their internal buffer is 15. 3) This number decreases according to the length of the DMX line section. If the overall length of the line section is more than 50 m, the maximum number of fixtures not using the internal buffer is reduced to 5. 4) As a consequence: The maximum theoretical length of the DMX line is 2500 m The maximum number of line sections (within one DMX line) is 20 The maximum number of fixtures in a line section (< 50 m) is 320 The maximum number of fixtures in a line section > 50 m is 120 In case the DMX line includes also fixtures without the internal buffer (like Kaleidos and Vetroluce) the same rules have to be considered; if the DMX line has more than 15 fixtures it is necessary to introduce an external buffer or a splitter. DMX line termination resistor For optimizing the DMX data transmission it is recommended that a termination resistor is inserted on the DMX output (unused output) of the last fixture of every data line. It is a 120 Ohm resistance sold across pin 2 and 3 of the DMX cable or connector, to prevent signal reflection. All LUCEVIVA intelligent fixtures have a built-in termination resistor that can be activated by setting ON the dip-switch 4 of the SW1 group. 11 IMPORTANT RULES FOR A PERFECT DMX CONNECTION 1. The connection has to be serial (daisy-chain) 2. Use the proper DMX cables (see page 8) 3. Connect up to 15 fixtures for every data line section 4. The DMX line length must not exceed 100 m 5. To extend the DMX line use a buffer 6. To split the DMX line use a splitter (see the note below) 7 Every DMX line must be terminated with a termination resistor (120 Ohm) Note: SPLITTER A splitter is a device allowing to create more branches out of a DMX line. A splitter with 4 outputs, allows to generate up to 4 DMX branch-lines out from one single line. The splitter has also the function of creating a galvanic insulation of the various lines, between each other and to the input line.
