Performance Counters Technical Data Sheet Microsoft Exchange Overview: Key Features and Benefits: Key Definitions: Performance counters are used by the Operations Management Architecture (OMA) to collect data and answer the questions posed to the various devices by the polling engine to determine its state of wellbeing. These counters provide the OMA with the data and information it needs to establish how well an application, server, service or driver is performing and whether there are any issues. By comparing the counter result with the defined threshold, the OMA is able to determine a problem or predict a future problem. They are also used for capacity planning. Performance analysis Capacity planning Determine system bottlenecks Performance Counter: A performance counter is that part of a modern microprocessor or other device, system or software that measures and gathers performance relevant events of the device, system or software without affecting the Sourcing has spent a great deal of time building an expertise on this complex subject both in its OMA and its people. There are thousands of performance counters for each device, system or application and the selection of those counters which will provide the customer or technical team with the most value is where the complexity lies. To some degree, the selection of the counters is considered an art. The selection depends on what the application, device or system does for the organisation and how important that role is to the business. Monitoring for the sake of monitoring is a waste of resources, time and money. System fine-tune Application performance performance of a program. For example, one performance counter might count the number of level 1 data cache misses while another performance counter might count the number of data reads or data writes.
Performance Counters: The following performance counters are used by Sourcing and the OMA for the monitoring of Microsoft Exchange: Exchange MTA Connector Counters o Inbound Rejected: Indicates the number of inbound messages rejected by the specified Receive MTA connector o Queue Bytes: Indicates the number of message bytes in the queue. o Queue Length: Indicates the number of messages in the queue. o Received Messages Sec: Indicates the rate at which messages are received from the connected entity. o Sent Bytes Sec: Indicates the rate at which bytes are sent to the connected entity. o Sent Messages Sec: Indicates the rate at which messages are sent to the connected entity. Exchange Information o Active Anonymous User Count: The number of anonymous users (those that do not authenticate) who have connected to the server and been active in the last 10 minutes. o Active Connection Count: The number of connections that have been active in the last 10 minutes. Generally, the active count is less than the total connection count. o Active User Count: The number of unique users that have logged onto the server and been active in the last 10 minutes. If the server maintains public folder replicas, remote users may connect to these replicas and increase the active user count. The count also includes remote users who connect to calendars on the local server. o Anonymous User Count: The number of anonymous users currently connected to the store.
o Connection Count: The number of current connections to the store. A user may maintain multiple connections if they use different protocols such as MAPI and IMAP. o Maximum Anonymous Users: Maximum Anonymous Users is the maximum number of anonymous users simultaneously connected to the NNTP Server. o Maximum Connections: Maximum Connections is the maximum number of simultaneous connections to the NNTP Server. o Maximum Users: Maximum number of anonymous and nonanonymous users simultaneously connected to the NNTP Server. o User Count: User Count is the number of users connected to the information store. Exchange Queue o Deliverys Per Minute: Indicates the rate that messages are delivered to all recipients. o Receipts Per Minute: Indicates the rate that recipients receive messages. o Receive Queue Size: Indicates the number of messages in the public store's receive queue. o Send Queue Size: Indicates the number of messages in the public store's send queue. o Sends Per Minute: Indicates the rate of Message sends per minute. o Submits Per Minute: Total number of LDAP searches that the categorizer submits per second. Page 3 of 8
Exchange Event Counters o Avg Event Time: Indicates the average time spent in each event. o Notifications Executing: Indicates the number of notifications happened that are currently executing. o Notify Queue: Indicates the number of pending update notifications that have been queued, but not yet transmitted to clients. o Total Events: Indicates the total number of events. Exchange Message Counters o Deferred Delivery Msgs: Indicates the number of messages with a deferred delivery date in the future which are held in the channel queue until they either expire and are returned or the deferred delivery date is reached. o Inbound Messages Total: Indicates the total number of messages received from the Internet that are waiting to be converted to Exchange format. o Message Bytes Per Sec: Indicates the number of message bytes being processed by the MTA every second. o Messages Per Sec: Indicates the number of messages being processed per second. o Outbound Bytes Total: Shows the total number of bytes sent by the server. o Outbound Messages Total: Shows the total number of outbound messages sent. o Total Loops Detected: Indicates the number of message loops detected. The system automatically creates a message queue for each thread. If the thread creates one or more windows, a message loop must be provided; this message loop retrieves messages from the thread's message queue and dispatches them to the appropriate window procedures. o Total Recipients Inbound: Shows the total number of recipients per inbound message received. Page 4 of 8
o Total Recipients Outbound: Shows the total number of recipients per outbound messages sent. o Total Recipients Queued: Indicates the total number of message transfer agent (MTA) recipients queued exceeds a given threshold. o Work Queue Length: The maximum number of recipients permitted in the MTA inbound and outbound queues for the information store, the Directory, and any connectors. o Work Queue Bytes: Shows the total volume of message content in bytes currently stored in the message transfer agent (MTA). Exchange Services Counters Exchange Information Store: Reflects the state of the information store service. The Information Store is the most critical component of Exchange Server 2000/2003. The core data storage repository for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, which contains both mailbox store and public folder store data. The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service uses a database engine called Extensible Storage Engine (ESE), a transaction-based database technology. The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, as its name implies, implements the Exchange store. The Exchange store hosts mailbox and public folders. The responsibilities of the Exchange store also include public folder replication. o Service Operating State Microsoft Exchange Management: Reflects the state of the management console Page 5 of 8
service. This service provides Exchange management information using Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). If this service is stopped, WMI providers implemented to work in Microsoft Exchange Management, such as message tracking and Active Directory access, will not work. Exchange MTA Stacks: Reflects the state of the MTS stacks service. The Message Transfer Agent (MTA) Stacks service in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is frequently used to provide backward-compatible message transfer services between Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 servers and Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 servers in a mixed-mode environment. Exchange POP3: Reflects the state of the POP3 service in Exchange. POP3 is the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) service. POP3 is a very simple and limited protocol. It has a set of approximately 11 commands, 10 of which are supported by Microsoft Exchange Server. When you install Exchange, the POP3 service is not started. You can use the Services snap-in in Microsoft Management Console (MMC) or the Exchange Management Shell to set the POP3 service to start automatically. Exchange Routing Engine: Reflects the state of the routing engine service. The Routing Engine service provides topology and routing information to servers running Exchange Server The advanced queuing engine within the SMTP transport subsystem uses this service to provide nexthop information when routing messages within the Exchange organisation. If this service is stopped, Page 6 of 8
optimal routing of messages is not available. Exchange Site Replication: Reflects the state of the site replication service. The Site Replication Service (SRS) provides directory integration between Exchange Server 5.5 and Exchange Server SRS runs on Exchange Server 2003 and serves as a modified Exchange Server 5.5 directory. Exchange server 5.5 responds to SRS as another Exchange Server 5.5 directory replication partner. SRS is automatically enabled on the first server that joins an Exchange Server 5.5 site. Exchange System Attendant: Reflects the status of the Exchange System Attendant service which is primarily a collection of subcomponents that work together to proxy Active Directory requests and to regulate internal Exchange Server functions. It is critical to Exchange Server's performance, since many Exchange-related services will not function without it. o Service Operating State Simple Mail Transfer Protocol SMTP: Reflects that state of the SMTP service. The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service, which transfers , is installed as part of E- mail Services, along with the POP3 service. SMTP Counters o SMTP Local Queue Length: This rule uses the SMTP Server object and Local Queue Length counter to track the queue of messages awaiting delivery to the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. Page 7 of 8
o SMTP Remote Queue Length: This value tracks the SMTP Server object and the Remote Queue Length counter. It tracks the remote queues, which send messages to other servers. This is a total number for all remote queues. General System Counters o System Up Time: The time (in hundredths of a second) since the SNMP agent was last re-initialised Technical Specifications: Contact Information: Learn More: Microsoft Exchange performance counters.
