This publication is intended to provide information on ethical standards and expectations, regulatory compliance, and other practical matters related to the animal care and use program. Recipients are encouraged to share the Animal Care and Use Newsletter with colleagues, students, staff and others in the research community at Cornell University. esirius Version 10A Updates As you may have heard (or seen), the updates from Version 10A of esirius have been released, and a number of the protocol system updates have been recently implemented. These should provide some notable improvements in the use of the protocol management system. This edition of the Animal Care and Use Newsletter is dedicated to providing descriptions of the most recent updates and instructions on how to use the new features of the protocol system. Also included with the descriptions are screen shots to help illustrate the changes. 3 December 2007 Page 3 Multiple Major Surgeries Information about multiple major surgeries will now be entered on page Surgery rather than on page Surgical Procedure. This change in location was made because it is more consistent with the information being requested. When using this section, please be sure to click on Save MMS Info before clicking on Continue.

4 Page 4 Copy Species A new function available with the Verstion 10A updates is the ability to copy detail information from one species to another. This will alleviate the necessity of typing in redundant information (procedures, drugs, housing location, etc.) as you add another species on which you will be performing similar procedures. Please be sure to verify the accuracy of information and update all the necessary pages when you copy information to another species, because not all information is copied. Particular attention should be given to the breeding information, surgeries and number of animals. Training As illustrated on the following page, there is a new section which lists training requirements for each person on the Protocol Personnel List. This list is not necessarily a comprehensive list of all training requirements for this protocol. Other training, as recommended by the Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE), may be required for IACUC approval.
