5 Why take a backup? Depends on how much you value the information. Personal s and photographs tend to have more value. Contacts and calendars are often valuable too. 6 What constitutes a backup? Same principle for Windows, Mac, Tablet or Smartphone A backup is a copy of what is stored on your computer system or device. If your device becomes unusable, you can recover data from backup. Multiple forms of backup no single solution. 17 Time Machine on Mac Backup occurs with Time Machine every hour, but this is not easily adjustable. Backups are retained as long as there is room. Mac can use the Cloud to backup, but oddly, not the icloud! 18 File History on Windows File History backup occurs every hour and is easily adjustable. Backups are retained forever unless otherwise specified. 20 Extra-ordinary Backups on Mac client dictates where messages are stored. If using default client, individual messages are backed up by Time Machine. You should periodically export the entire mailbox to maintain context. MS Outlook messages are not backed up by File History either. Periodically export the MS Outlook PST File. Always take backup before running SCANPST. 23 Summary If your hard drive fails a technician can replace it. A technician cannot recover your data unless you have backups. Recovery is a slow process and therefore takes time.
