2 Lesson 3: Communicating on the Internet Objectives After completing this lesson, you will be able to: o Explain how works. o Write and send messages. o Manage messages.

5 GETTING AN ADDRESS o To exchange messages with other people, you need to have an e- mail address for yourself. o You can obtain an address by opening an account with an service provider (ESP). o Your ESP may be the same as your ISP or it could be a web based service such as Gmail or Hotmail.

6 OPENING A WEB BASED ACCOUNT STEPS 1. Open the web site for the ESP 2. Click the link for new account 3. Create an address 4. Enter your account information

7 PARTS OF AN ADDRESS An address has two parts separated by symbol: johndoe@example.com Information example.com Description Unique user name symbol separates the user name from the remaining part of the address. The domain name of the mail server, where all your messages are stored

8 SENDING AND RECEIVING o To send and receive you need the following 3 options: 1. Internet connection supplied by your ISP or Internet access

9 2. server A computer within your network that works as your virtual post office. It is provided by your ESP and it stores your messages.

10 3. client ( program) An application that runs on a personal computer or workstation and enables you to send, receive and organize Local Client Software is installed on your computer and messages are saved on your hard drive so you can only access the messages on that computer. Example: Microsoft Outlook Express Web Based Client Software is on a web server. Messages are saved on the web server and available from any computer. Examples: Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, GMail

15 ORGANIZING MESSAGES Most programs come with various options to allow you to manage and organize your messages. One option is a flag. You would flag s that required a follow-up action.

18 ETIQUETTE Today a majority of the Internet users use electronic mail to send messages both personal and professional. When composing messages, you need to follow certain rules of conduct called etiquette. etiquette helps simplify communication and avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation.

Bcc means you are sending a copy to someone to keep them informed but you do not want the recipients of the to know who got a copy.

27 ONLINE COMMUNITIES Online communities are formed by groups of computer users who have common interests and purpose to communicate with each other over the Internet.

28 TYPES OF ONLINE COMMUNITIES Online community Newsgroups Chat groups/rooms Blogs Social networking web site Description Newsgroups are online discussion forums dedicated to specific topics. They are like bulletin boards where messages and questions are posted for others to comment and respond to. Chat groups or rooms are Web sites that you can use to communicate instantly with other people who have logged on to the same Web site. Online diaries or journals you can use to post articles, daily events, or your thoughts on any subject. Web sites that facilitate building online social groups for people who share common interests. Example: Facebook

29 TYPES OF ONLINE COMMUNITIES Newsgroups online discussion forums dedicated to specific topics. bulletin boards where messages and questions are posted for others to comment and respond to.

32 PUBLISHING ON THE WEB The process of making Web pages available to other computer users is called publishing. Anyone can create a web site using Web authoring software such as Microsoft Expression Web. Web authoring software enables the user to develop a Web site in a desktop publishing format. The software will generate the required HTML coding for the layout of the Web pages based on what the user designs.

33 After you finish creating your web site, you use File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to upload the Web page files from YOUR computer to your ISP s server. Your Internet Service Provider can then transfer your new web site onto the World Wide Web

34 PUBLISHING ON THE WEB Web authoring software is used to create web pages Example Microsoft Web Expression File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to upload the files for the Web page to your ISP s server so the it can be displayed on the World Wide Web
