1 Bomb Threat Procedures

2 POLICY DATE This policy is effective 3 September 2017 Fire Safety & Evacuation Procedures SCOPE This policy applies to all Hotel Based Employees that are employed by The Coroner s Court Hotel Brisbane. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITY Director of HR is responsible for the development, amendment and administration of this policy. POLICY DETAIL Priorities..Keep calm and don t hang up. On receipt of a telephone bomb threat immediately refer to Bomb Threat Checklist held by the switchboard. IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK: WHEN the bomb is due to explode. WHERE the bomb is located. WHAT type of bomb it is, what does it look like. WHY was the bomb placed WHERE are you WHO are you and WHAT is your address. FIRST RESPONSE Contact the GM immediately (any time day or night) and Duty Manager The GM will decide what action should be taken. Notify Police (dial 000) or activate duress alarm. Ensure Bomb Threat Checklist has been thoroughly completed. Ensure that the Emergency Response Team are assembled at Reception for further instructions. The ER Team will follow Bomb Search procedures as outlined in attached Bomb Threat Management Guidelines. The Emergency Response Team Leader (GM or the designate) will be in charge of any subsequent evacuation if it is necessary. Notify Security Important In any communication to guests, the word bomb should NEVER be used. Suggested - A possible emergency situation exists in the Hotel

3 Fire Safety & Evacuation Procedures Bomb Threat Checklist Special instructions for switchboard operators Most bomb threat calls may not be directed to an individual, but rather to the person who first answers the call, normally the switchboard operator. It is imperative that switchboard operators (including relief operators) are fully aware of how to handle threat calls. They should concentrate on listening and directing others where required. As soon as possible after the call, a report should be prepared for investigators. The first consideration however should be the notification of the call to the Assistant Manager or Security Manager who will follow a predetermined course of action. During the call Keep calm. Act normally. Listen very carefully to the caller. Take down the exact words of the message. Date / Time of call: The Questions After the threat message has been delivered, ask the following questions unless information has already been given in the original message. When is the bomb going to explode? Where did you put the bomb? When did you put it there? What does the bomb look like? What kind of bomb is it? What will make the bomb explode? Who placed the bomb? Why was the bomb placed? What is your name? Who made the bomb? Where are you? What is your address? After the call Time call ended: Number dialled:

4 Immediately inform the Duty Manager. Additional information The caller should attempt to complete the following questions about the call. Sex / Age Man: Woman: Child: Young: Old: Speech Rational: Rambling: Impediment: Muffled: Soft: Emotional: Clear: Loud: Calm: Intoxicated: Accent: Background noise Traffic: Street noise: Machinery: House noise: Aircraft: Music: Typing: People in background: Other: Threat message Taped: Read: Serious: Jocular: Well spoken: Irrational: Incoherent: Abusive: Other: Type of call Local: Payphone: Long distance: STD: Mobile: Other Did you recognise the voice? If yes, was the caller familiar with the layout of the Hotel? Call recipient Name (print): Signature:
