9 Message Handling A,B,Cs Accurate Brief Clear Use plain language for signal reporting Loud and Clear (log as LC) Good Readable (log as GR) Fair Readable (log as FR) Weak Readable (log as WR) Weak Unreadable (log as WU) Precedence: Urgent, Immediate, Routine Do not send operator notes or comments during message text Originating station must work with an original signature to verify responsibility for message contents and enabling authentication Example: might not be JCDEM policy or procedure

11 Message Formatting Originate all outgoing messages on ICS213 ICS213 widely used Similar to an message JCDEM has a slightly modified form Not completely compatible with flmsg application Do not reformat incoming messages Handle as received, including typos However verbal messages should be distilled Example: might not be JCDEM policy or procedure
12 Transmitting Message Header Sending Message number Precedence After sending each line say Break, OVER If receiving station needs a fill, Say Again Word before (or all before) Word after (or all after) Word (or all) between and Repeat until that line received If line received correct, say GO Receiver can say Confirm Echo Sierra Papa? 13 When to use Proword I Spell Do not automatically spell familiar words or acronyms like EOC or RACES unless operating conditions are poor enough that it is needed Necessary for proper names There is no common spelling Jones, I spell Juliet Oscar November Echo Sierra Clarify homonyms such as to, I spell Tango Oscar Punctuation Period ends a sentence. Not spelled out unless conditions poor Dot, I spell Delta Oscar Tango Decimal, I spell Delta Lima such as in a radio frequency Dash, I spell Delta Hotel for a hyphen Atsign, I spell Alpha November Example: might not be JCDEM policy or procedure
14 Delivering the Message Read the text and signature of the message to the recipient If leaving message on an answering machine or with a third party, leave your callback number or other method of contacting you Example: might not be JCDEM policy or procedure
