TABLE OF CONTENTS 1 Introduction What is an Edit? EDIR 1.1 Edit Changes Best Practices Edit Use Description and Best Practices Edit Class Description and Best Practices Made For Region Description and Best Practices Edit Details Description and Best Practices Supplemental Referent Type Best Practices Mapping Best Practices from EIDR 1.0 to EIDR Mapping 1.0 Edit Classes to 1.X Fields... 8
1 Introduction With the release of EIDR 1.1, there have been some additions in functionality. These changes are: Addition of fields and controlled vocabulary to Edits to better support Versions o New Edit Use o New Edit Class o Made for Region o Edit Details Addition of a referent type Supplemental to better support trailers and value added material. These changes were made to meet both the use cases required by the studios and their partners and the basic EIDR principles of simplicity and utility. 1.1 What is an Edit? The following are the criteria for what constitutes (or should constitute) an edit: Timing differences in main body should trigger a new Edit Timing differences in titling and credits may trigger a new Edit Audio or Video differences, with same timing, may trigger a new Edit, e.g. American Pie DF Content that has different data (ex. Left and Right of 3D) should constitute a new Edit. Content that has more or differing data (IMAX) from the same parent should constitute a new Edit. Re mastering that changes the timing should trigger a new Edit. Colorized content of a previous version should constitute a new Edit. Changes to main title and end credits may trigger a new Edit. Changes to Production Logos may trigger a new Edit when they are stored in a form integral to the content. Older versions of a work that include Intermission, Overture, and/or Exit elements should be considered a different Edit. 2 EDIR 1.1 Edit Changes Best Practices The EIDR 1.1 release splits Edit Use and Edit Class into two different elements to allow a small, well defined set of Uses to facilitate searching, and a longer list of new Classes to provide a formalization of common defining characteristics of versions (a.k.a., Edits). EIDR Best Practices
Edit Use new field to express the original, intended use of the Edit. Edit Class revised field to express the elements that commonly distinguish Edits. Made for Region new field to express the original, intended region for which this Edit was created. Edit Details new text field to express differences not captured in the Edit Use, Edit Class, or Made for Region Edit Uses and Made for Region act as grouping tools for searches that let you find a set of Edits. The much larger set of Edit Classes then tells you what is different about a particular EIDR record, but in a more structured form than the Details field. In this view, consistency of use for Edit Class is less important than consistency of use for Edit Use. 2.1 Edit Use Description and Best Practices This field captures the original, primary, intended use for the Edit. In many cases, the actual uses will be different, e.g. itunes using the Theatrical cut. Below is the list of best practices for the values for Edit Use: Value Theatrical Home Video Broadcast Hospitality Web Unknown General Use/Best Practice For theatrical exhibition and similar public performance For retail, VHS, DVD, BD, EST, streaming services (e.g., Netflix), SVOD, TVOD/PPV, etc. For broadcast, cable or satellite networks including syndication For airplanes, ships, hotels, or armed forces For Edits of Web Titles or Web-specific Edits of others, e.g., web syndication For use when an Edit is required for data model practices, but the true nature of the Edit is not known For non-specific, wide use releases Cardinality of Edit Use (1): 2.2 Edit Class Description and Best Practices The Edit Class field is intended to enumerate the primary, distinguishing characteristic(s) of an Edit. The values are listed below. EIDR Best Practices
Value Original Unrated Censored Sanitized Sanitized Audio Sanitized Picture Extended Shortened Director s Cut Colorized Restored Restored Audio Restored Picture Anniversary Rereleased Creative Technical Use/Best Practice Indicates the version originally created for distribution Not reviewed or not rated Edited or cut for rating or region Censored, but not cut, for expletives or sexual content E.g., blanked or bleeped out E.g., blurred or pixelated Edited primarily to lengthen the content Edited primarily to shorten the content, e.g., for additional commercials Made for distribution as the Director s Cut Colorized version of originally B&W content Made to include both restored audio and picture Made primarily to include restored audio Made primarily to include restored picture Made for distribution as an Anniversary edition Reissued for other reasons Made primarily for other creative reasons Made primarily for other technical reasons Alternate Ending Includes an alternate ending Recap Product Placement Dialog Music Sound Effects Credits Dubbing Credits Logos Includes recap of previous episodes or split segments Includes additional or different product placement Includes changes in dialog Includes changes in music Includes changes in sound effects Includes different title or end credits Includes changes in dubbing credits Includes changes in production logos EIDR Best Practices
Overture Intermission Exit Other Includes overture Includes intermission Includes exit Differences not enumerated above. Should describe in Details field. The Edit Class has a cardinality of 0 8, so that a registrant can use more than one Edit Class value to define a record, o e.g., an Edit could be the Restored, Anniversary cut. 2.3 Made For Region Description and Best Practices EDIR 1.1 added a field to Edits that indicates the region(s) for which the Edit was originally made. (This does not imply anything about where the Edit was actually distributed.) The values are ISO country codes, plus two additional values: Domestic and International. The allowed values are: Value(s) Domestic International ISO country codes Use/Best Practice Originally made for the country of origin. Originally made for broad use outside of the country of origin. Originally made for one or more countries, specified by two character country codes (ISO Alpha 2 Code). The Made for Region has a cardinality of 0 8 to allow multiple regions to be specified. 2.4 Edit Details Description and Best Practices The Edit Details field is used to express details not captured in the Edit Use, Edit Class, or Made for Region. Unlike the Description field, which is also an optional field on Edits, this field is used in matching to distinguish one Edit from another. Any difference will be considered distinguishing. The field is a 128 character string and can provide descriptive text or structured text to facilitate parsing. It includes a domain attribute, e.g., lionsgate.com, so that a reader of the record can identify the provider of the details and possibly the associated structure or semantics. To allow for the case in which co distributors each need to track Details, multiple instances could be specified with different domains, e.g., lionsgate.com and nbcuni.com could each tag the record with its version of the Details. Cardinality of this field is 0 8. EIDR Best Practices
3 Supplemental Referent Type Best Practices To support Trailers and Value Added Material (VAM), EIDR has added a new Referent Type alongside Movie, TV, Short, Web, Series, Season, Composite and Interactive Material. The new Referent Type is called Supplemental and applies to secondary content items whose primary purpose is to support, augment, or promote other content. It encompasses the following types of content: Value added material (ex. director s commentary, outtakes, making of, etc.) Trailers Other promotional material The best practice is to register these as title level records with the new referent type of Supplemental. A Supplemental item will have one or more lightweight relationships connecting it to the records(s) for which it is a trailer, promotion, or value added material. IsPromotionFor (to relate trailers and other promotional material to one or more other records IsSupplementTo (to relate VAM to a feature to one or more other records) The record that is the target of the relationship is a title level or Edit record, but could also be a Series or Season. Objects further down a hierarchy (such as Clips, Edits, etc.) can also still serve as Promotions or Supplemental material. This works for items that really are children of the original media, while commentaries, etc. often are not. 4 Mapping Best Practices from EIDR 1.0 to EIDR Mapping 1.0 Edit Classes to 1.X Fields The table below shows how EIDR 1.0 values translate into EIDR 1.1 values. 1.0 Edit Class 1.1 Edit Use 1.1 Edit Class 1.1 Made for Region Theatrical release (original) Theatrical Original Domestic Theatrical release (local censored) Theatrical Censored Broadcast release (original) Broadcast Original Domestic Broadcast release (local censored) Broadcast Censored Cable/Satellite release (original) Broadcast Original Domestic Cable/Satellite (local censored) Broadcast Censored EIDR Best Practices
