Chapter 1 Using advanced network searches, Avaya Address Manager helps you build, maintain, and display a centralized list of hosts discovered in the network with their MAC and IP addresses, and device port connectivity. In addition, Avaya Address Manager enables you to print or export the list. You can also import connections into Avaya Address Manager. Avaya Address Manager helps you rapidly locate a host or switch port on the network, and find duplicate IP addresses in the network. Starting Avaya Address Manager To start Avaya Address Manager from Avaya Network Management Console, select Tools > Avaya Address Manager. Avaya Address Manager opens. To start Avaya Address Manager from HP-OV NNM (UNIX or NT-OV), select Tools > Avaya > Avaya Address Manager. Avaya Address Manager opens. Avaya Address Manager User Interface The Avaya Address Manager user interface consists of the following elements: Menu Bar - Menus for accessing Avaya Address Manager management functions. For a full list of the menus in Avaya Address Manager, refer to Appendix A, Avaya Address Manager Menus. Toolbar - Toolbar buttons for accessing Avaya Address Manager management functions. 10 Chapter 1 Table 1-1. Avaya Address Manager Toolbar (Continued) Button Description Menu Item Opens the Modify Connection dialog box. Starts Connection Discovery Stops Connection Discovery. Opens context-sensitive help. Edit > Modify Connection Actions > Start Connection Discovery Actions > Stop Connection Discovery Help > Help On Network Tree When you place the cursor on a toolbar button for one second, a label appears with the name of the button. The Network Tree shows a hierarchical representation of the devices in the network. The Network Tree has 4 levels: My Network - The highest level is My Network. The number of switches in the network appears next to My Network. Subnets - The second level in the Network Tree shows the subnets in the network. Switches - The third level in the Network Tree shows the switches in the network. The switches are labeled with their IP address and the Best Name of the device. Modules - The fourth level of the Network Tree shows the modules in the switch. When an item in the Network Tree is selected, the Connections Table displays the connections for the part of the Network Tree selected. For example, if My Network is selected in the Network Tree, all connections in the network are displayed in the Connections Table. If a particular switch is selected in the Network Tree, the Connections Table displays only the connections from the selected switch. 10 Avaya Address Manager User Guide

Introduction to Avaya Address Manager Connections Table Dialog Area Status Bar The Connections Table displays the connections between the switch ports in the network and the hosts to which they are connected. The Connections Table also displays information about the connected ports and hosts. You can customize the Connections Table to include only the fields you want. For information on customizing the Connections Table, refer to Customizing the Connections Table on page 26. The area under the Connections Table is where all dialog boxes open. This area can be resized by dragging the horizontal splitter bar with the mouse. When a dialog box opens, it replaces the current dialog box open in the Dialog Area. When no dialog box is open, the Dialog Area disappears, and the Connections Table expands to take its place. The Status Bar shows the communication status between Avaya Address Manager and the devices on the network by displaying a status message and an appropriate graphic. The Status Bar also displays an icon if filtering options are active. The table below shows the Status Bar icons with their descriptions. Table 1-2. Communication Statuses Status Graphic Description Ready Communicating Communication Error Filter Active The application is ready to communicate with the devices in the network. The application is currently communicating with the devices in the network. The last attempted communication with the device in the network was not successful. Filtering options are currently active. In addition, when discovering connections, a progress bar is displayed in the Status Bar. Avaya Address Manager User Guide 11

Chapter 1 Using Tooltips Avaya Address Manager includes a tooltip feature which allows you to display additional information about objects in the Network Tree. 15 Introduction to Avaya Address Manager Searching in Avaya Address Manager Avaya Address Manager enables you to search the Network Tree and Connections Table for switches, ports, hosts, and connections. You can search using up to 7 search criteria. Only those elements meeting all of the search criteria are highlighted in Avaya Address Manager. Where possible, the Avaya Address Manager verifies the validity of search criteria. If the text in the field is appropriate for the field, e.g., a valid IP address next to By Station IP, the text appears black, and the checkbox next to the field is checked. If the text in the field is inappropriate for the field, e.g., non-numeric characters in an IP address, the text appears red, and the checkbox next to the field is not checked. You can use an asterisk(*) in IP and MAC addresses to signify a wildcard in the asterisk s position, but the address format must be complete. For example, *.* is valid for an IP address search expression, but * is not. Similarly, you cannot use a numeric expression and an asterisk as a member of an IP or MAC address. i.e *.42 is not a valid search expression. To search Avaya Address Manager for a switch, host, port, or connection: 1. Click. Or Select Edit > Find. The Find dialog box opens. Figure 1-4. Find Dialog Box Avaya Address Manager User Guide 15

Chapter 4 38 Avaya Address Manager User Guide

5 Importing and Exporting This chapter provides detailed instructions on how to import and export connections into Avaya Address Manager. It includes the following sections: Import/Export Overview Import/Export Overview - An overview of importing and exporting files into Avaya Address Manager. Importing Connections - Instructions on how to import connections into Avaya Address Manager. Exporting Connections - Instructions on how to export connections from Avaya Address Manager. Import/Export Format - A description of Avaya Address Manager s import/export format and its fields. Avaya Address Manager enables you to import and export connections from the Connections Table. If you have a text document or a spreadsheet listing the devices and hosts in your network with their names, IP addresses, locations, users, or other important information, you can merge this file with a file exported from Avaya Address Manager. If you import the merged file into Avaya Address Manager, all of the host information will be visible in the Connections Table. This makes it simpler to identify hosts. Importing Connections To import connections from a file into Avaya Address Manager: 1. Select File > Import. A file browser opens. 2. Browse to the directory in which the file is located. 3. Select the file. Avaya Address Manager User Guide 39

Chapter 5 4. Click Import. The connections in the file are imported into Connections Table. Any manually changed connections in the Connections Table are left unchanged, and all port information is saved. To enable Avaya Address Manager to display all imported connections, clear the Connections Table before importing connections. For information on clearing the Connections Table, refer to Clearing the Connections Table on page 33. Exporting Connections To export connections from Avaya Address Manager: Import/Export Format 1. Select File > Export. A file browser opens. 2. Browse to the directory in which you want to save the file. 3. Enter the name for the file in the File name field. 4. Click Save. The connections in the Avaya Address Manager are exported to the specified file. The format of files that are exported from Avaya Address Manager and can be imported into Avaya Address Manager is a comma separated value (CSV) text file. A CSV file can easily be imported into a word processor or spreadsheet program. The following table provides a list of the fields in the import/export file and their descriptions. Table 5-1.
