Students will develop an understanding of individual routing protocols and concepts and learn to configure, verify, and troubleshoot routing operations.

3 LEARNING OUTCOMES OUTLINE OF CONTENT LEARNING AND TEACHING LO1 Understand, configure and compare static and dynamic routes. LO2 Compare and contrast classful and classless IP addressing. LO3 Design and implement a classless IP addressing scheme for a network. LO4 Describe the purpose, nature and operation of a router and routing tables. The purpose and configuration of static and default routes and the role of dynamic routing protocols. Classful and classless IP addressing and classful and classless routing behaviours in routed networks. The purpose, nature and operation of a router and process of routing tables. The role routers play in enabling communications across multiple networks and the path packets will take through the network. Basic router configuration for a newly installed router. METHODS Interactive teaching will be the primary learning method, which will enable one on one contact, group work and greater group interaction and cohesion. Group computer simulation eg Cisco Packet Tracer will form the context for practical application of the material taught. This will be used for example based learning, problem based learning, practical design and testing. Group work will enable students to engage in class activities encouraging optimal use of the individual s ASSESSMENT VALID/RELIABLE Formative Assessment: Feedback is continuous throughout the course with on line interactive test questions on the LMS, group activities and lab progress feedback. This facilitates the opportunity for question and answer dialogue (both staffstudent and studentstudent). It also provides constructive feedback on an ongoing basis. The network engineering courses provide opportunity for ongoing formative assessment of student progress in theory and practical skills. For example end of chapter quizzes, simulator activities, lab exercises, RESOURCES REQUIRED TEXT, WEB LINKS, EQUIPMENT, COMPUTER LABS ETC AS APPLICABLE Networking devices. Computer laboratory. Computer software. There are no prescribed texts for this course, but a laboratory manual will be provided to students. Recommended text: CCNA Exploration Companion Guide for Routing Protocols and Concepts.
4 LO5 Configure basic router operations and correct common routing issues and problems. LO6 Configure and verify basic RIPv1, RIPv2, single area OSPF, and EIGRP operations in a small routed network. The characteristics of distance vector and link state routing protocols. The functions, characteristics, and operations of the RIPv1, RIPv2 and EIGRP protocols. The purpose, nature, and operations of the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) Protocol. preferred learning style while developing the students ability to work together as a team. The LMS functions as the home page of the course. It is used as a source of information and news, for revision, for both formative and summative exercises, and other on line activities. A wide range of resource material is uploaded for use by the students. The LMS is used as an assessment tool and to promote and reinforce learning. Usage of LMS and the Internet will also develop students knowledge of and competency in computer technology. Tutorials will enable knowledge to be consolidated and clarified. [LO1 6] Online Module Tests to continually test and monitor material taught in class. [LO1 Simulation Tests to assess all the work learned from the laboratory manual, and put it together in a realworld scenario under low pressure conditions. [LO1 6] Summative: Skills based Exam 40% to assess all the work learned from the laboratory manual, and put it together in a real world scenario under high pressure conditions. [LO 3,5 & 6] Online Tests & Exam 20% to test overall knowledge of the course. [LO1 6] (Cisco requirement)
5 Written Exam 40% to test overall knowledge of the course using detailed explanations. [LO1 6] To pass this course, the student must achieve a minimum mark of 50% overall and attempt all assessments.
