1 ESSEX COUNTY COLLEGE Business Division CIS 152 Internet Concepts Course Outline Course Number & Name: CIS 152 Internet Concepts Credit Hours: 3.0 Contact Hours: 3.0 Lecture: 3.0 Lab: N/A Other: N/A Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in any CIS course Co requisites: ENG 096 and RDG 096 Course Outline Revision Date: Fall 2010 Concurrent Courses: None Course Description: This course provides a basic introduction to the world wide computer communications network, the Internet, including the World Wide Web. Students gain an understanding of the history and background as well as the hardware and media that comprise the Internet. This is a research oriented course in which Internet Protocol, net etiquette, e mail, accessing Internet services, File Transfer Protocol, and searching the databases are explored. Students are provided hands on introduction to the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) used to create World Wide web sites in the Internet. Students also create their own web site and begin to use the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to create, edit, and maintain their site. Course Goals: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following: 1. describe the Internet; 2. describe methods of connection to the Internet; 3. use Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to create, edit and maintain a web site; and 4. produce a fully functional multi page web site from scratch Measurable Course Performance Objectives (MPOs): Upon successful completion of this course, students should specifically be able to do the following: 1. Describe the Internet: 1.1 describe the history and background of the Internet and discuss its importance and influence on modern culture; 1.2 describe the Internet and the World Wide Web and associated key terms; and 1.3 describe the Internet, intranets and extranets 2. 2 Measurable Course Performance Objectives (MPOs) (continued): 3. Use Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) to create, edit and maintain a web site: 3.1 define Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and discuss the standards used for web development; 3.2 describe tools for creating HTML documents; 3.3 create web documents using HTML tags, including all major tag types, attributes, and their appearance; and 3.4 describe the phases of the web development life cycle 4. Produce a fully functional multi page web site from scratch: 4.1 produce a 10 page web site with formatted text, images, targets, links, and tables; and 4.2 upload and edit files on a web server Methods of Instruction: The instruction will consist of a combination of lectures with onscreen presentations and hands on computer exercises demonstrating key concepts and features. Outcomes Assessment: Quizzes and exam questions are blueprinted in accordance with course objectives. Assessments and feedback are conducted on an ongoing basis throughout the semester and include the following: In class assignments and homework focusing on the acquisition of specific skills are regularly scrutinized for the presence of course objectives. Quizzes and exams are given at the end of every chapter to test recall of knowledge of the elements of web Development. Every semester/term, data on selected questions are collected to determine student performance. Applications of the elements of web development are evaluated in the multi page web site project, which is graded using a rubric. 3 Methods of Evaluation: Final course grades will be computed as follows: Grading Components % of final course grade Homework Assignments 20% The purpose of hands on computer homework is to demonstrate key concepts and features, which are related to course objectives. Homework is examined to show evidence of the extent to which students meet the course objectives. 1 Project (date specified by the instructor) 25% The multi page web site project is used to show evidence of the extent to which students have synthesized course content and have met course objectives. 3 or more Exams (dates specified by the instructor) 25% Exams are used to show evidence of the extent to which students have met course objectives. Final Exam 30% The comprehensive final exam is used to examine the extent to which students have understood and synthesized all course content and achieved all course objectives. Academic Integrity: Dishonesty disrupts the search for truth that is inherent in the learning process and so devalues the purpose and the mission of the College. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, the following: plagiarism the failure to acknowledge another writer s words or ideas or to give proper credit to sources of information; cheating knowingly obtaining or giving unauthorized information on any test/exam or any other academic assignment; interference any interruption of the academic process that prevents others from the proper engagement in learning or teaching; and fraud any act or instance of willful deceit or trickery. Violations of academic integrity will be dealt with by imposing appropriate sanctions. Sanctions for acts of academic dishonesty could include the resubmission of an assignment, failure of the test/exam, failure in the course, probation, suspension from the College, and even expulsion from the College. Student Code of Conduct: All students are expected to conduct themselves as responsible and considerate adults who respect the rights of others. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. All students are also expected to attend and be on time for all class meetings. No cell phones or similar electronic devices are permitted in class.
