1 Mr.Kailley s AP Chem programming Unit Set up instruction sheet for PC s (Mac will be kind of similar: good luck) 1) Go to the following website: Choose your proper version PC or MAC Download and install the easy eclipse program. (Make a note of the folder where the eclipse is being installed) Mr.Kailley s Intro to programming guide 1

2 2) Create a folder on your desktop called javaprograms 3) Now open up eclipse application (you can create a shortcut to it on your desktop). A window will come up: Choose your javaprograms folder Mr.Kailley s Intro to programming guide 2

3 PROGRAMS IN JAVA ARE CALLED APPLETS. LET S MAKE YOUR FIRST PROGRAM. This is just a functional test to make sure the Eclipse java program is working properly. I will be teaching you what programming actually is, during our class lessons. For now, just follow the instructions 1) Make sure eclipse is open, and on the file menu, select the following options. 5 3)Then give the project a name, avoid symbols and don t start with a number. Remember the spelling EXACTLY, including the capitals. Then click finish. Mr.Kailley s Intro to programming guide 5

7 5)Now the actual programming windows open up. Project list and project files list. You can close these side windows if you want. Error window. If you type anything wrong in your code it will show up here. Mr.Kailley s Intro to programming guide 7

8 6)We need to create a file, to type in the instructions that will tell the program what to do. The file that contains the program instruction is called a class file File>>new>>class Mr.Kailley s Intro to programming guide 8

9 7)Now we have to give the class file a name. GIVE IT THE EXACT SAME NAME AS THE PROJECT NAME. (SPELLING AND CAPITALIZATION MATTER.JAVA is not a loosy-goosy (spelling?) language like javascript and python. JAVA is strongly typed language like C++ and C#) Leave all the other checkboxes as they are. You type name here. Mr.Kailley s Intro to programming guide 9

10 8)Now make sure the Helloworld.java file is selected, and in the programming instruction window, replace what is there, with what I have typed. I have a copy of the instructions on my AP programming website. THIS IS WHERE YOU LEARN HOW TO PROGRAM. YOU NEED TO LEARN WHAT INSTRUCTIONS TO TYPE IN(SPECIAL WORDS), AND THE LOGIC OF THE INSTRUCTIONS MATTER. THE COMPUTER IS ONLY AS SMART AS THE PROGRAMMER so be careful when you say that the computer is not smart because your program doesn t work what you are saying is that YOU are not really. 1)Select the.java file If you want to see line numbers, right click in the margin and select show line numbers. 2)Type in the instructions. 13 11) Select to save the resource before running. Click checkbox and press OK. 12) MAY NOT RUN BECAUSE YOU TYPED SOMETHING WRONG. FIX IT CALLED DEBUGGING NOW, IF YOU TYPED SOMETHING WRONG, A MESSAGE WILL SHOW UP IN THE ERROR WINDOW WITH SOME HINT IT MAY BE HARD TO DECIPHER BECAUSE SO MANY THINGS MIGH BE WRITTEN. BUT LOOK CAREFULLY AND THERE WILL BE A LINE NUMBER USUALLY SOMEWHERE WITH SOME ERROR HINT. ANY ERRORS WILL BE LISTED HERE Mr.Kailley s Intro to programming guide 13

14 13)After attempting to fix errors, start at step 9 again. Hopefully the errors are gone! (More complicated programs take hours, days to debug!!! 14)If you have no errors, the program will RUN!!!! It will run in a little window called the applet viewer. Your first running program You can close the program by closing the windows or by going to the file menu and selecting the close all function. Now you are ready to start learning the instruction to coding. See you in the first programming class..
