1 Using Panopto in Canvas Panopto is a service that allows you to record and store video and audio ( podcasts ) recordings and link them to your Canvas courses. Panopto also supports live streaming of events. Panopto videos are stored in the cloud (online) and are associated with your Canvas course. Both faculty and students have the ability to make and store recordings. About videos and Canvas: Videos and other large files should not be uploaded directly to Canvas. Rather, they should be stored on Google Drive or on Panopto and then linked to pages in Canvas. Recommendations: 1) If practical for your course, it s often best to record shorter videos (10-20 minutes) rather than longer sessions (hour long lectures). This will make it easier for students to find what they need, it will be easier for you to maintain, and files will be smaller and easier to manage. 2) Check your microphone and record a short test video before recording a long session. Download the recorder: Go into your Canvas course and choose Panopto Recordings from the menu on the left*. Then click the Create button and choose Record a new session. Select the Mac or Windows version as appropriate**. Once it downloads, you will need to install it. *If you don t see Panopto Recordings, go to Settings->Navigation and drag Panopto Recordings to the area on the screen to activate it or choose Enable from the gear icon. Scroll down and click Save. **Version numbers are subject to change. On the Mac, look under the Apple menu in the upper left and choose About This Mac, to get the version.

2 Launch the recorder: You can launch the recorder from the Panopto Create button or open the Recorder App directly from your computer (it will be in your Applications folder on your Mac). If you are launching from your computer directly, you will need to click the Sign in button: Enter or select the server name as shown: su.hosted.panopto.com. From the drop-down menu next to Providers, choose Canvas. It will ask you to enter your Canvas login and password. Then click the Login button. Then click the Authorize button: It s a good idea to check the remember me box in case you lose your network connection. Once the app is open, Click Create New Recording and check the settings as shown below. Next to Session, enter the name you want for the video. Hint: It s a really good idea to include the date and course ID as well as the title. This will make it easier to trouble shoot if something goes wrong and for you to manage your recordings. 3 Click the red Record button to begin recording (If you are using Powerpoint, you will want to have your slides open and ready to enter Slide Show mode.) Hints to engage students: When speaking, look into the camera and avoid reading slides. Pause periodically and ask reflective questions. When you are done recording, exit Slide Show mode (esc key) and then use the red Stop button. Important: check to make sure the video has uploaded before quitting the app or logging out of the computer. You needn t wait until it has finished processing. It will process online. If the connection between your computer and Canvas is interrupted before the session is complete, don t worry, you can log in again. Once the video is uploaded, you can close the app. It will take Panopto some time to render the video (it will usually complete within an hour), but you do not need to stay logged in while this process completes. Do login to Canvas later to make sure the file is there and plays successfully. If you click Manage Online Recordings, you can see your video, and the Share button will give you a link you can share with your students or allow you to add them to your folder. 4 To create an Assignment Folder for students to upload their video assignments Login to your Canvas Course and select Panopto Recordings. Then choose the gear icon in the upper right. In the screen that appears, choose Create Assignment Folder: You can then close that window. To upload their work, students will click on Panopto Recordings and then choose the assignment folder and then use the Record a new session or Upload media option under Create as appropriate: To insert a video into a Canvas page: Navigate to the page* where you want to insert the link. 5 Select and insert your video and click Save (you may need to scroll down.) Note that these links will be automatically updated for you when you copy this course into your new course shell in future terms. *Create a new page by choosing Pages from the left hand menu and then choose All Pages and then the +Page button and give it a title. Streaming vs Downloading By default, students can both view the video online (streaming) as well as download it for later viewing. If you want to limit this to streaming only, change the folder settings as shown below to No one : Optional: Subscribing for Automatic Downloads Students can subscribe to get recordings downloaded automatically by subscribing to a RSS (really simple syndication) feed when they are in Panopto: Center for Teaching, Learning, and Technology, Spring
