CSE 131B Compiler Construction II Instructor: "And you thought you wrote a lot of code last quarter..." Agenda 1. Course Administration Details (10 minutes, tops) 2. CSE 131B Course Outline 3. Semantic Checker, Part I Debrief 4. Programming Tips for Large Projects 5. Project 1: Semantic Checker, Part II 6. Software Engineering 1

System Details Please look on our class web page for the syllabus: Please register and look at the CSE131B WebBoard for future announcements. It is the same board as last quarter, so if you're already registered, you don't need to re-register: Please Joseph Chow if there are problems. Please register for a CSE131B class account on ieng9.ucsd.edu if you don't already have an OCE account. People Instructor: (peisert@sdsc.edu) TA: Joseph Chow (chowjm@ucsd.edu) Tutors: Bashir Eghbali Bryan Chiang Ethan Chan Jason Zhao Kenneth Mo 2

Availability: We're available a lot Lecture: Center Hall 119, Tu/Th 2:30-3:50 Discussion: Currently conflicts directly with CSE 141 lectures, so this will move. No discussion section this week. Office Hours in AP&M 3349C: W 3:30-5, F 10-11:30, & by appointment Lab Hours (frequent!) in AP&M B402 WebBoard, ... Cheating Don't cheat. Don't test us. We have the last 5-6 years of CSE131A and CSE131B code to compare your projects to. Read the Integrity Statement located on the class web page. Cheating hurts the other students in the class who are working hard. We (UCSD) also need to make sure that future employers get an accurate description of who you are. 3

Keep Copies of Your Work Keep extensive written design notes or old versions of your code to show how you arrived at the version that you turn in. Using CVS is a good way to do this. Assignments and Exams 45% Exams, 55% Projects Midterm or Quizzes: 15% Final Exam: 30% Semantic Checker (Part II): 25% Code Generator/Optimization: 30% 0.5% Extra Credit for the class for using CVS and turning in your CVS log! (Gets applied after the curve has been set). 4

Grading If you turn in both of your projects, don't cheat, and achieve at least the following scores, you will receive at least the corresponding grade: 90%: A- 80%: B- 70%: C- 60%: D- I may lower these percentages, but I won't raise them. More detail to come. Debugging Output: The Not- Recommended Way void check5() { System.out.println("Inside Check 5");... System.out.println("Yo, dude!");... } 5

Debugging Output: The Right Way void check5() { Debug("check5: begin");... Debug("check5: start of outer loop");... } Debug boolean debug = true; void Debug (String sdebugmsg) { if (debug) System.out.println(sDebugMsg) ; } 6

ErrorCodes DEBUG = 7 (minor) to ERROR = 3 (default) to EMERG = 0 (major) DEBUG (7) = THISROUTINE Start, End, etc... INFO (6) = Starting and stopping the program. NOTICE (5) = Loading and unloading the servlet. WARNING (4) = ERROR that can be recovered from (doesn't stop servlet). ERROR (3) = Anything that stops the servlet. CRIT (2), ALERT (1), EMERG (0) not currently used. Debug const boolean debug = true; int ideferrthreshold = 3; void Debug (String sdebugmsg, int ierrcode) { } if (ierrcode <= ideferrthreshold ) Debug(sDebugMsg); 7

SemCheck Part II Continued implementation of the first semantic checker, with an emphasis on types. Same Compiler Roadmap 8

What does not carry over from SemCheck, Part 1 MODULE construct ELSIF and CASE constructs Forward procedure declarations Nested procedure declarations Built-in functions other than NEW(p), GET, PRINT Multi-dimensional arrays with comma syntax 9
