1 Welcome Orientation to online CPS102 Computer Science 2 (Java 2) All online courses use Blackboard system, as soon as you login Blackboard in college s pipeline, please complete Blackboard Learn Student Orientation in Blackboard Learn Help Information area so that you are familiar with how to navigate the course site in Blackboard very well. 2 Introduction Welcome to the Computer Science 2 (Java 2) class. The orientation to this course will begin by a discussion of the goals of this class and the materials that are required to participate in the course. Because all of the course information, teaching materials and assignments are presented at the course site in Blackboard, the structure of this course site will be explained. The orientation will conclude with some tips for a successful online learning experience. Instructor: Dr. Huiwei Guan hguan@northshore.edu

3 Course Description This course develops advanced computer programming skills through the use of the Java programming language. Advanced features of the Java language are studied. Topics include object-oriented programming, polymorphism, inner class, interface and abstract class, various string processing, graphics and design strategies, exception handling, debugging, files and streams, and the serialization of objects. Topics will be reinforced through exercises in writing programs for varied applications.

4 Learning Requirements This course is divided into weekly units. Each week, you will be responsible for reading and reviewing the online lecture notes and related chapters of the textbook, executing and analyzing the example codes for requested chapters (you can download those Java source codes of the examples from the publisher s web site which textbook provided), and completing the required assignments. You also can look VideoNotes (step-by-step video tutorials specially designed to enhance the programming concepts presented in the textbook). Please refer to the detail information on the back of the front cover of the textbook.

5 Required Course Materials This is a programming course. In order to complete the assignments and exams, you will need to install the following software on your computer: Java Standard edition 6.0 and JCreator, you can download both software from "Instructions for Software Installations" folder under Content link at course site in Blackboard. If you use NetBeans 8 in your Java 1 course before, you can keep using NetBeans 8 in this course. The textbook for this course is: JAVA: How to Program. 10 th. Edition. Deitel and Deitel. Prentice Hall, ISBN: If you re using the old 9 th edition textbook in Java 1 course, then you should use my special syllabus for chapters and assignments of 9 th edition book.

6 Assignments & Tests The major course requirements for the semester are two exams and four assignments. Each assignment consists of both short answer questions and programming tasks. You will need to come to the college s test center either at Lynn or Danvers to take the exams with your personal ID. The exams will be available for two days (please refer to the syllabus and course schedule for the designated test time).

7 How This Course is Organized in Blackboard The course syllabus and course schedule are located in Course Information link, please look at them first. Instructions to install Java software are located under Instructions for Software Installations folder in Content link; If you use either Java Standard edition 6.0 and JCreator, or Java Standard edition 8 and NetBeans 8 in your Java 1 course before, you do not need to install any software in this course, you just keep using either JCreator or NetBeans 8 in this course. All my lecture notes for each chapter are located under Lectures folder in Content link; All assignments for each chapter are located in Assignments link. I often post some learning tips in Announcements link, please check them often and it should be very helpful for your online learning.

8 Announcements in Blackboard When you log onto this course in Blackboard, the first screen you will see are the Announcements. Announcements are displayed when you log onto your course. Any new information that you need to be aware of as the course progresses will appear as a new announcement. You should check the announcements often. I'll post the outline of each chapter, requirements, questions/answers, and some important learning tips there. I ll also remind you the due date for each assignment and the designated dates for exams in advance by Announcements.

9 Important links and folders Course information link: You can find the course syllabus folder and course schedule folder. The syllabus contains important information about the course. I urge you to print this so that you have a hard copy to refer to. On the syllabus, you will find course objectives and textbook information as well as grading and course schedule. Content link: You can find Lectures folder to see all my lecture notes (PowerPoint slides) for each chapter; Instructions for software installation; and college s test center locations and phone number. Assignments link: You can find all assignments from there.

10 Submitting Assignments In assignments, for the description questions, you should write and save your answers in a.txt file by using Notepad; for programming questions, you should write and save your java source code in.java files, then use college s pipeline to submit and attach your files to me hguan@northshore.edu before or on due (refer to syllabus and course schedule). It has no credits for overdue. During the summer, IS of the college often maintain and install some network devices and software, college's pipeline and network may be down sometimes. In this situation, if you have trouble to submit your assignment s files by college s pipeline , then you can use your personal/public to submit your files, however you MUST write CPS102 assignment #, your name in Subject field of your so that the college firewall will not block you and I can recognize you. If you me, always cc yourself a copy to make sure your submission is correct and successful.

11 Tips for Success Print syllabus and follow the course schedule to learn. Read the lecture notes and textbook. Analyze the java source codes of the examples and execute them to see why and how the results are obtained. Complete and submit the assignments and exams on time. If you me your answer file and java source code files for assignments or exams, you should cc yourself a copy, then open the copy files to make sure you submit correct files successfully. Don't fall behind.

Read the lecture notes and requested chapters on the textbook. Execute and analyze the example codes for requested chapters. Take enough time to do and complete the assignments before or on due.
