StarOffice 4 Kids Release User's Guide 1 Introduction StarOffice 4 Kids is a product suite for teachers and students. Emerging from a technological research project in collaboration with Sun Microsystems, Inc. and the Heinz-Nixdorf-Institute at the University of Paderborn, kippdata developed StarOffice 4 Kids into an integrated learning environment with highly flexible functionality and user interface. StarOffice 4 Kids is a novelty among presently offered Primary & Secondary Education Software products. Easy customization by the teacher according to and subordinated to the learning goals, is the key enhancement of StarOffice 4 Kids to current learning software. This software is aligned to the needs of the teacher and his teaching material and not vice versa. StarOffice 4 Kids allows the teacher to handle an interactive learning process not only according to the age-specific learning steps of his class but also in regard to the individual learning progress of his class or a selected group of students. Adjusted to the learning speed of his students he can for example easily teach the basic functionality of word processing like designing of texts in different fonts and font sizes or formatting a document. With StarOffice 4 Kids he can produce learning content using pictures and coloring, which is an essential feature for up-to-date pedagogical learning methods especially in elementary schools. StarOffice 4 Kids enables the teacher to produce documents for the exercises in class. He can easily transform usual office documents into task sheets for the class and store them into the subject specific folders. His students will find them in the workspace of the class, work on them and save them in their own workspace, that only contains the personal files and that is protected from the access of other students. StarOffice 4 Kids allows the teacher to adapt the user interface according to the requirements of the learning steps. In minor grades the teacher could for instance start teaching how to use the Text-Writer with documents that have an extremely reduced function tool bar. Once the students have learnt to use the basic functions, it is very easy for the teacher to extent the function tool bar with regard to new learning goals. The students workspace in StarOffice 4 Kids allows an overall easy handling through its learn-oriented design of all user elements. Easy symbols and the restriction to specific lesson-relevant functions make the learning process easier and more efficient. 5 5
StarOffice 4 Kids Release User's Guide 2 StarOffice 4 Kids as a software learning environment StarOffice 4 Kids, as a learning software environment, can be used in several ways in Primary and Elementary schools. The table below lists subjects and learning areas suitable for the use of StarOffice 4 Kids. Subject/learning area Language Arts Mathematics Special Subjects Art Ethics Foreign Languages Sport Music Media Education Environment Education Health Education Traffic Education Social Studies Use possible (+), use conditionally possible (-) The StarOffice 4 Kids CD contains ready-to-use teaching units covering some of these subjects and learning areas. These teaching units can be used as a basis for creating new teaching units. The Teacher's Work Space allows to simply adapt the ready-to-use teaching units according to new, different, specific needs of the teacher. StarOffice 4 Kids is for example particularly suitable for using it in language related classes. The table below shows categories of exercises, which can easliy be done with StarOffice 4 Kids: 6 6

StarOffice 4 Kids Release User's Guide 3 StarOffice 4 Kids and its modules 3.1 First steps the teaching unit Letter T StarOffice 4 Kids provides students and teachers with a software learning environment for use in primary and elementary schools. StarOffice 4 Kids consists of a word processor, the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer, whose scope of functions can be adapted by the teacher to the needs and abilities of the students. Besides that the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer, offers students a simple option to access and work on existing teaching units and to manage their own documents. The use of StarOffice 4 Kids by students in class will be demonstrated below with the example of the teaching unit Letter T for grades 1-2. After the student has launched StarOffice 4 Kids, the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer is displayed. In this example, the student is to work on teaching unit Letter T for English language lessons. The student first opens directory English by double-clicking with the left mouse button. Note: The blue folder is the icon for a directory. If the student wants to leave a directory he can change to the directory above by clicking on the button 8 8
StarOffice 4 Kids Release User's Guide The subject-specific directories are located in directory classdir which is determined during installation. The Installation Guide describes how the directories are set up. The directory English contains among others the teaching unit WS_Letter_T (WS_Letter_T.udu). Note: The sheet of writing paper is the icon that represents a document, for example a teaching unit. Documents or teaching units, that have been created with the Teacher's Work Space described in Section 4 show the file extension.udu. Each teaching unit has its own toolbar which is defined with the Teacher's Work Space. The documents are documents created with StarOffice 6 (.sxw). These documents do not have their own toolbar but use the default toolbar. Teaching unit Letter T is loaded and the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer is displayed. StarOffice 4 Kids features round and square buttons. The round buttons are identical both for the File Viewer and for the Writer. 9 9
StarOffice 4 Kids Release User's Guide Using the button for the File Viewer, the student can switch at any time to the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer. Using the button for the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer, the student can switch to the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer. A list of all buttons can be found in Section 5 Reference for using StarOffice 4 Kids. The File Viewer and the Writer of StarOffice 4 Kids feature different square buttons. They are located in the toolbar. The toolbar of the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer can be adapted with the Teacher's Work Space for the relevant teaching unit. For teaching unit WS_ Letter_T, the toolbar consists only of two buttons. They are: 10 10
StarOffice 4 Kids Release User's Guide By clicking on the right-hand button of the toolbar with the left mouse button a maximized view of the teaching unit is displayed. Using the maximized view, the student can gain an overview of the teaching unit. If he then with the left mouse button clicks on the left-hand button of the toolbar the optimum page width is displayed. The purpose of teaching unit Letter T is to write down the corresponding word beneath each picture. All words should start with a t
StarOffice 4 Kids Release User's Guide When the student has entered all words in the text fields, he can save the teaching unit. By clicking with the left mouse button on the Save button the Save dialog box opens. In the Save dialog box, the student can enter the name under which the teaching unit is to be saved. In this case, the teaching unit is called Tims Letter T
StarOffice 4 Kids Release User's Guide No destination directories are specified in the Save dialog box. The documents and teaching units are always displayed in window Your Files of the File Viewer. The documents and teaching units of the relevant student are displayed in this window. Note: The content of directory homedir is shown in window Your Files. The location of this directory is determined during installation. In Section 4 The Teacher's Work Space, we show, by way of example of teaching unit Letter T, how the toolbar of an existing teaching unit can be edited using the Teacher's Work Space
3.2 Information on using StarOffice 4 Kids When developing StarOffice 4 Kids, it was important to keep operation as simple and clear as possible. There are no superfluous multimedia effects. All program functions are assigned comprehensible and unique buttons so as to simplify orientation in the program. Tests in grades 3-4 have shown that the students generally very quickly and intuitively learn how to use the program and are able to work with it independently. All program functions of StarOffice 4 Kids can be operated with the mouse. The computer keyboard is only required for text input. This way students slowly get familiar with the input medium. When the student moves the mouse cursor on top of an operative button, the button changes its color. The buttons have four different statuses: If the character on the button is clearly recognizable, the button can be used. Operable buttons turn pink when the mouse cursor is on top of the button. If the button is blue, the button is activated. In this case, the words entered via the keyboard will be bold. If the icon on the button is gray, the button can currently not be used. The function is currently unavailable. To ensure easy operation and in order to keep the program as clear as possible, the use of menus was largely reduced. Basically, StarOffice 4 Kids is operated via buttons. StarOffice 4 Kids offers two different types of buttons. Round buttons are used for important functions which are available both in StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer and in StarOffice 4 Kids Writer. These buttons are listed below: This button saves the current document. This button prints out the current document. This button closes the current document. This button opens the StarOffice 4 Kids Help. This is the button for the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer. 14
This is the button for the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer. This the icon which closes StarOffice4Kids. This button quits the program. 3.3 The File Viewer The StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer has two tasks. 1. The student can manage his personal documents and teaching units. 2. Via the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer the teacher makes teaching units and documents available to his class. In order to be able to perform these two tasks, the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer offers two windows: Your Files: The documents and teaching units of the relevant student are displayed in this window. The student has the option of deleting documents and teaching units in this window. He can use the Delete button for this purpose. Only the teacher and the relevant student can access the content of this window. Files of your Class: The content of this window is managed by the teacher. He can create directories and save documents and teaching units in these directories or directly in the window. The teaching units can be produced with the Teacher's Work Space described in Section 5 The Teacher's Work Space. The Files of your Class window is assigned to directory classdir. The location of directory is determined during installation. 15
Working with the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer and the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer is explained in Section 6.1 Questions and Answers. 3.4 The StarOffice 4 Kids Writer With the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer, StarOffice 4 Kids offers a word processor whose scope of functions can be adapted by the teacher to the students needs and abilities. The special feature of the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer is the toolbar. The toolbar can be edited and created with the Teacher's Work Space. A uniform Default Toolbar is used for documents. Teaching units feature an adapted toolbar. Further information on teaching units, documents and the toolbar can be found in Section 5 The Teacher's Work Space. The annex provides an overview of all functions which can be used in the toolbar. Working with the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer and the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer is explained in Section Questions and Answers. 3.5 Help StarOffice 4 Kids features Help for the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer and the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer. The Help texts can be accessed via a table of contents (1), an index (2) and a full-text search (3). The Help covers all functions which can be used in the toolbar of the StarOffice 4 Kids Writer. 16

4 The Teacher's Work Space 4.1 First steps a toolbar for teaching unit Letter T In Section 3 StarOffice 4 Kids and its modules, we already presented, by way of example of teaching unit Letter T, how students can use StarOffice 4 Kids. This section explains how a teacher can change the toolbar of existing teaching units with the aid of the Teacher's Work Space. After the Teacher's Work Space is launched the screen shown above is displayed with the following three areas: 1.Toolbar: The toolbar of the current teaching unit is displayed in this area. 2.Choices: This shows the available functions which can be inserted in the toolbar. 3.StarOffice: The part of the workspace where a conventional StarOffice document is displayed. In addition, the Teacher's Work Space features three menus: File: The functions of this menu are used to edit teaching units. Configuration: The functions of this menu configure the appearance of StarOffice 4 Kids for a whole class. Help: The functions of this menu contain some help texts. Also there are informations about the program and its licence. 18
The Open function of the File menu must be selected in order to open an existing teaching unit. The teaching unit WS_Letter_T (WS_Letter_T.udu) in directory English is chosen. Note: The Teacher's Work Space is configured so that the classdir of StarOffice 4 Kids is the default for all Open and Save functions. Teaching unit Letter T has been loaded. The document of the teaching unit is displayed in area 3 (StarOffice). This is a StarOffice 6 document. Section 4.4 Working with StarOffice documents describes how the document can be edited. 19
The toolbar of the teaching unit is displayed in the Toolbar window. The toolbar is extended with an additional function form the choices frame ( see below). The toolbar of teaching unit Letter T should be extended with function Insert a picture. In order to do this, the Insert a picture function button is selected by clicking on it with the left mouse button. To insert the function button in the toolbar, you click on the Add button in the Change frame with the left mouse button (see arrow 2 above). 20
The Insert a picture function is then displayed in the toolbar frame. New functions are always inserted at the end of the toolbar (button furthest right). Note: Functions that have been added to the toolbar are grayed out in the choices frame. Therefore it is not possible to insert the same function twice in the toolbar. In addition, a spacer should be inserted in order to keep the toolbar manageable. 21
In order to do this, the same action as already done when adding function Insert a picture is required (see picture above): 1.First choose the spacer by clicking on it with the left mouse button. 2.Clicking on the Add button inserts the function in the toolbar. The spacer is now shown at the end of the toolbar. To move it in front of the Insert a picture button continue like this: 1.First choose the spacer by clicking with the left mouse button. 2.Clicking with the left mouse button on the < button or the > button in the Sort area allows you to move the spacer. 22
Clicking on the < button moves the spacer to the required position. After the new toolbar has been created, you can save it to the teaching unit. In order to save the teaching unit under the same name, you must choose the Save function of the File menu (see picture above). After saving, teaching unit Letter T with the new toolbar can be opened again via the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer by StarOffice 4 Kids. Teaching unit Letter T is displayed in the Files of your Class window with its new toolbar. 23
4.2 Creating your own teaching materials WS_Computer6 Section 4.1 First steps a toolbar for teaching unit Letter T showed how the toolbar of an existing teaching unit can be changed. In the section below, we shall create a new toolbar and then assign it to an existing StarOffice document. In this section, we want to create the toolbar shown above. After launching the Teacher's Work Space, the screen shown above is displayed. 24
As described in Section 4.1 First steps a toolbar for teaching unit Letter T, the functions can be inserted in the toolbar. After all functions have been inserted in the toolbar, the new toolbar should be saved. In order to do this menu item Save as... is chosen from the Configuration menu and the Toolbar submenu (see picture above) and t he Save toolbar as... dialog box will open up like this: We want to save the toolbar under the name toolbar_1.ucf in directory teacherdir. In addition, the new toolbar can be defined as the Default Toolbar. In order to this, choose menu item Set as Default Toolbar... in the menu Configuration and the 25
Toolbar submenu as seen below. Note: The Default Toolbar is displayed if a new document is created in StarOffice 4 Kids. In addition, the Default Toolbar for StarOffice documents is used. Teaching units have their own toolbar. In the next step we will create a new teaching unit WS_Computer6 consisting of a StarOffice document which has already been created and the toolbar which was created in the previous steps. Firstly, open the existing StarOffice document. Choose menu item Open in the File menu for this purpose. 26
Therefore first the type of files in the LoadFile... dialog box has to be changed to StarOffice Writer documents (.sxw). Then the document WS_Computer6.swx must be chosen. Note: The Teacher's Work Space can load only documents which have been created with StarOffice 6 or a higher version of StarOffice or OpenOffice. 27
Document WS_Computer6.swx is displayed in the StarOffice window. The document can also be edited in this area. All functions offered by a conventional StarOffice version are available. Only the File menu of StarOffice is not available. The File menu of the Teacher's Work Space is used in place of the StarOffice File menu. The new teaching unit WS_Computer6.udu can now be saved. Choose menu item Save as... in the File menu as seen below, The teaching unit can now be saved under the name WS_Computer6 28
After the teaching unit has been saved in the Teacher's Work Space, you can open it via the StarOffice 4 Kids File Viewer. Note: In the dialog box Save file as... the typeof file can also be changed to StarOffice Writer (.sxw) so that documents can also be saved plain StarOffice Writer documents.
