1 Tutorial API A RP - July version 5.0
2 Content In this tutorial, API A RP Beam Design Checks are reviewed in details. A beam model of a steel frame has been used as a start FEM model. Beam member finder was used to recognize beam member length in 3 directions. The report was generated with the help of report designer.
3 Launch SDC Verifier Open in Ansys Workbench AISC360.wbpz Double Click on or in context menu click Edit 3
4 Predefined project This tutorial uses project with predefined boundary condition, load combinations and load group. The model contains only beam elements of the following types: I-Beam, Circular and Rectangular Tubes 4
5 Explanation of Joints Joint location where different beam members connect. They are used to recognize beam member length by Beam Member Finder Tool. There are 6 types of Joints: D Joint beam members that lie on the curve but with different properties; D Joint beam members connected in one plane; 3D Joint beam members connected in space; Free Joint node which belongs only to one element (free); Beam-Plate Joint beam member connected to plates (perpendicularly); User Defined; 5
6 Joint Recognition Execute Edit from Joints context menu Press Find. When performing the joint recognition there are 3 options for existing joints. Default option: Keep only modified remove all joints except edited by user. Keep all existing options should be used when additional elements were added to the model. 6
7 Joints Plot Select All Joints (Ctrl+A). Press 3 Press OK 3. Modify Joint Type Show Labels: no labels or labels with joint Ids Show D joint axes: draw arrows of beam Y and/or Z direction depended on plot type Plot Joints of selected types: Hide all elements of the structure that do not belong to any joint: 7
8 Beam Member Lengths in directions Beam Member Finder recognizes beam members and (buckling) lengths for different directions (Y, Z and Torsional). z y Length Y 4 Beam Members with L = 5 Length Z Beam Members with L = 5 8
9 Recognize Length Execute Recognition Beam Member Finder Press Search.. 9 Default Break Joint Options for Tabs: Length Y: DY, 3D, Plate DY, Plate 3D Length Z: DZ, 3D, Plate DZ, Plate 3D Length Torsional: DY, DZ, D Und, 3D
10 Beam Member Finder interface Break Options define what joints are used to split beam members Change Length/Factor for selected beam members Cm Type is used in API A, ISO 990 and Norsok N004 standards Colored Plot of members with labels (ID, Length, Factor or Cm Type). Beam Member straight line. If it contains joints it is split on sub members 0
11 Beam Member s Length Plot Select All Beam Members (Ctrl+A) Press to display Length Plot 3 Press OK 3. Also it is possible to display beam members IDs by pressing
12 Cm reduction factors Cmy and Cmz reduction factors are used in combined axial and bending check. API RP A description: By default Cm Type is equal to A = 0.85 for all members. It is possible to modify Cm Type for selected members: In SDC Verifier B = minimum from (b) and (c) Cmy and Cmz factors for ISO 990 can be found in the Table 3.5- and are used in the formula Cmy and Cmz factors for Norsok N004 Rev3 can be found in the Table 6- and are used in the formula 6.7

15 Add API RP A standard Execute Standards => Add => API RP A LRFD ( st, Jul 993).. API A RP standard covers the design checks for circular tubes only. 5
16 Define Material Characteristics Press to set the material yield stress and tensile strength Select All Materials (Ctrl+A) 3 Tensile Strength: 360e6 4 Yield Stress: 40e6 5 6 Press Set Press OK
17 Unit System API RP A Standard is applicable to stiffened and unstiffened cylinders having t >= 6mm, D / t < 300 and Yield Stress < 44 MPa. To validate this condition, all dimensions should be converted to proper units in SDC Verifier. MmKS (Millimeter/Kg/Second) unit system is used. To preview measurement units press In case the standard cannot perform verification of the model the results will display the value =
18 Create default plots/tables Press to select loads for default plots/tables Press LS (4 / 4) to select all load sets 3 Press OK twice

20 Extreme table for overall check Execute from the Overall Check context menu Press to select load 3. 3 Load Type: Load Group. 24 Add ISO 990 standard Execute Standards => Add => ISO 990 ( st, Dec 007). Press OK.. ISO 990 procedure is similar to API A RP. In overall check it is possible to verify if the structure passes all checks : Overall Utilization Factor = worst Uf among all checks <. Add extreme table and criteria plot for..load Group the same as for API standard. API A RP standard covers the design checks for circular tubes only. 4
25 Add Norsok N004 standard Execute Standards => Add => Norsok N004 (rev.3, Feb 03). Press OK.. Norsok N004 procedure is similar to API A RP. In overall check it is possible to verify if the structure passes all checks : Overall Utilization Factor = worst Uf among all checks <. Add extreme table and criteria plot for..load Group the same as for API standard. 5 Norsok N004 standard covers the design checks for circular tubes only.
26 Report Execute Add Report Designer => Results from Report context menu. Exclude all checks except the Overall check in each standard.. There are 4 templates of the reports: Empty only first page and preface items are included; Model Setup description of the model data (materials, properties, components, boundary conditions) is included; Results for each load extreme displacement tables, stress and displacement plots are included. Predefined tables: sum of reaction forces, stresses/displacements summary tables. In addition all standards are included with a set of tables/plots created in the project; Full Model Setup + Results + all tables/plots created in jobs. 6
27 Report. First Page Right click on First Page => Edit. 3 4 Fill in information about project. Select Image From View and pick.isometric. Press OK
