1 Installing and Using Xcode 1. Installing Xcode Xcode is a professional C++ IDE for the Mac. This is Apple s IDE for Mac and ios software. Note that while the IDE itself is free, it may require the latest version of Mac OS X, so you may be forced to upgrade ($20?) if you want to use Xcode. To obtain a copy of Xcode, see part 1: Getting Started with the xcode Programming Environment The following steps outline how to properly create a C++ project on a Macintosh computer using Xcode. These instructions are written for the computers in our lab 2263 SELE. First, open Xcode: Go menu, Applications, scroll to xcode. Double-click to start When you see the Welcome to Xcode window, click on Create a new Xcode project. A new dialog window will open to collect the information that xcode needs to create a project. THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP, so read carefully. First, here s what you should see Along the left, under OS X, click Application as shown. Then, in the upper-right, click the icon for Command Line Tool. Xcode is now ready to save your new project, and needs to know where to save it if you aren t careful, you may not be able to find your program when you are done! For consistency, we ll save all work in your Documents folder. Select Documents from the Favorites list on the left, and if necessary, un-check the option to create a local GIT repository: Prof. Joe Hummel Page 2 of 6

4 Ignore the int argc, char *argv[] you see as part of the main( ) function definition. While you re here, go ahead and add the missing using statement: using namespace std; Go ahead and save your changes: File menu, Save. To run the program, go to the Product menu, and select Run if you are asked about Developer Mode, select Disable. After your program runs, you ll see this very exciting output: Xcode does not open a separate Console window, but instead handles all console input and output via the Output window pane in the bottom-right corner. part 2: Programming in Xcode Let s write a simple program in C++ Modify the main() function to input 2 real numbers from the keyboard, compute their average, and output the result. Go ahead and write the code Use the Product menu to run the program, then click in the Output window to select it so you can then enter two numbers. The program should then output the average. Excellent! Save your work and File >> Quit out of Xcode. part 3: Files created by Xcode At this point Xcode should be closed. Open your Documents folder: the quickest way is via the Go menu. 5 Open the Testing123 folder to see what Xcode created, which is a project file (.xcodeproj) and a sub-folder: Open up that sub-folder, and you ll finally see the important stuff: Your C++ program is in the file main.cpp this is the MOST IMPORTANT FILE, and represents your Prof. Joe Hummel Page 5 of 6

6 intellectual work. If you need to submit your program for grading, submit this file main.cpp file. If you want to take your work with you when you leave the lab, either (a) copy the entire Testing123 folder, or (b) copy the main.cpp file. For example, you can attach main.cpp in an to yourself, or copy the folder / file to a USB drive. The other important file is the Xcode project file, the one you saw with the.xcodeproj extension. When you want to open Xcode and start working on your program, this.xcodeproj file is the one you need to open simply double-click on this file, and the Mac will startup Xcode and re-open your project for you. Go ahead and double-click your project file, and after a few seconds, you should be back where you were when you exited Xcode: You re ready to start programming again. Prof. Joe Hummel Page 6 of 6
