Creating and Saving a Personal Kidspiration 3 Template I. PART 1 CREATING PERSONAL TEMPLATES! 1. Open Kidspiration. You will see the screen below. Click New Picture View. Or go to Activities open a pre-made template and adjust it to your activity. You may like a template, but it isn t quite right for your grade level, you CAN ADJUST it and save it to meet the needs of YOUR GRADE LEVEL. That is the beauty of creating personalized templates. Before you do anything else, you MUST ENABLE the TEMPLATE CREATOR. 2. Go to the top menu and find Teacher. All of the selections will be gray except, Enable Teacher Menu. Click on that Enable Teacher Menu. 1
3. You will get a password option. Click Please do not show me this message again and then click OK. You can work with the password option, but for those who have difficulty with password options and forget often, it is suggested that you just click the option and then OK. 4. Now when you go back to Teacher you will see the darkened or black options showing up. 2
5. Now create a template from scratch or open a pre created activity and make the adjustments for your activity. See example.. II. PART 2 SAVING TEMPLATES! 1. Now there are two ways you can save your templates. OPTION 1 for Saving Templates! (Easier Way) The first is saving on your desktop and moving it to the server so you can have access to all of you computers. 6. Go to File Save As. 3
7. Now choose your location to save it. If you aren t sure how to do this, it is probably better to Save it on your desktop. To do that, click on Desktop to the left, and name your template. Go to File Name and type in the name of the template. Try not to create names too long. 8. Now exit and look to see if your icon is located on your desk top. The icon will be white with a gold star. If you are not at school, you can it to yourself or put it on a flash drive to put on the server later on. OPTION 2 for Saving Templates! ***** SERVER USE: AT SCHOOL ONLY Templates and User Folders! 9. Now go to My Computer on the desktop or go from the Start Menu and find My Computer. 4
Once open, click on Users on??? (Your school will have a number ). If you don t know your school number, talk to your tech specialist or that person, Jude (jdubois@vrml.k12.la.us or Mike (mdartez@vrml.k12.la.us). After you know your school number, go to Users and then go to your own folder. Look for the folder with your user name. That is YOUR USER FOLDER. Click that open and create a folder named for your project. Example: Frog Life Cycle and place your new template in there. For the younger ones, it is suggested that you go to each computer and place a copy on each desktop (or in a folder). To do that, go to My Computer again and go into your user folder. COPY (NOT CUT) and then paste on each desktop. When the children open the template, have them open it and go to save as and have the child put their initials and an extension for you to know the name of the project. Example Sam Jones is doing a frog template. He would save it as sjfrog. NOW as the teacher you can create templates yourself for each child in the User Folder. Go to Save As, and type sjfrog (for Sam Jones). Go back to Save As and type msfrog for Mary Smith). Go back to Save As and type in jafrog (for Jimmy Allen). Do this for each child to have a template. OPTION 2 for Saving Templates! (A little more complicated and this way it will be saved ONLY on the computer where you create it!!!) 10. Click Save as on the Go back to the Teacher Link on the top menu and click on Save with Activity Wizard. 5
11. You will see the Activity Wizard box pop up.click Next. 12. Then you will see the Symbol Library Selection box pop up. Decide where you want your template. This Frog Activity was a Science Activity, so it would be placed in the Animals and Plants Library. Click Select and decide where it will go. Then click Next. 6
13. The Picture View Defaults box will be next. You can change defaults if you want. For beginners however, it is wise to leave it as is and click Next. 14. Now you will see the Text Defaults. Same as #13. It is wise for now to just leave it as is and click next. (You can go back and change these once you are more confident with the settings. 15. Same as the above Click Next. 7
16. Now Name Your Activity under Activity Name if you want a description, type in the 2 nd box. Click Kidspiration Activities Folder. Then CLICK THE SUBJECT where you want your project to be located. For this activity, the Science box would be clicked. Then click Save Activity. 17. Now you should see a Success window with a message that the activity has been created. Now go to the File menu and click exit. 8
18. Now open Kidspiration again. Click on the subject where you saved your file. (Example Science). 19. The previous file created was Frog Life Cycle in Science. So if Science is clicked, the Frog file will show up under Science. Now the template will be within this Kidspiration file (ONLY ON THIS COMPUTER) from now on. 9
