The following safety precautions ensure that the Bookshelf environment is protected and is safe for each individual user s access. Machine Activations Each account is limited to a maximum of two computers and two mobile devices (e.g., iphone, tablet, Kindle Fire, etc.) activated at a given time. However you can access online on any computer. To register a new machine, should you wish to replace one, please complete the following: 1. Sign into your evantage account ( 2. Select the person icon followed by Devices: 3. Within this screen, you will be able to deactivate one of the workstations or mobile devices in order to access on another. Appendix A - Security A-1

37 Bookshelf Restrictions Copy/Print Restrictions Not all ebooks on the Bookshelf have the capability to copy and/or print the content materials. This ability/restriction is determined at company level and all ebooks encompass specific copy and print restrictions; whether it be copying and/or printing a certain number of pages at a time (5,10, all, etc.) or not being able to copy and/or print content at all (feature not available). Expiration ebooks can be created to have an expiration date. This date can either be an absolute date when the ebook is no longer available, or a set number of days after the code has been redeemed. Access through different platforms may be restricted separately. Online access may be prohibited or expire earlier than accessing your materials through the download application. The standard time frames for accessing materials is 2 years online and no expiration for accessing through the download. This is dependent on the Company settings however and may not apply to every title. Appendix A - Security A-2

41 Appendix E FAQ Is Linux supported? There is no standalone app for Linux, but Bookshelf can be accessed via a Web Browser. I should be able to print X pages, but I can only print less than that If your copy restrictions are less than your print restrictions (ex. 5 page copy restriction, 10 page print restriction), Bookshelf Online will enforce the most restrictive setting. The enforcement of this policy is due to the fact that Bookshelf online spools up a print job, which means it is pulling all of the text from the Vital Source Server and opening up a new tab/window, displaying that text for the user to print. Since technically it is acting as a print and copy window, the most restrictive setting is applied. Please note that this does not apply to Bookshelf Desktop. ebook is only showing blank pages (or black or grey) This problem is usually linked to the graphics card. To resolve this please upgrade your video card driver to ensure it supports Direct X 10. More information can be found at: Black-Gray-content-shown-instead-of-text Can Bookshelf be downloaded to Windows RT? Windows RT is not a supported Operating System. Windows RT is only used by Surface RT based tablets (the Surface Pro uses Windows 8). Windows RT has too many limitations to support the native client, and is incompatible with software designed for any other version of Windows. Bookshelf does fully support Bookshelf Online through the Internet Explorer browser that is bundled with Windows RT. Is it possible to view two books at once? Within the Desktop Bookshelf application, you are able to open multiple ebooks and arrange them on your desktop. Viewing multiple documents at once is not supported in the online Bookshelf application. Error message received when trying to print through Bookshelf online 'To keep access to evantage open and fast for all users, we must limit the number of pages you view during a short time period. When you are trying to print as many pages as possible, Bookshelf Online queues up the pages in a new window. If you close that window immediately and start trying to navigate the book again it will trigger the error message, essentially saying that no more than 90 pages can be accessed in 90 seconds. If you wait 90 seconds or more this will not happen. This error message is not stopping you from printing. If you wait approximately 60 seconds you will be able to begin navigating and printing again. Error received when downloading a book using Windows 8 If you are running Bookshelf on Windows 8, you may see the following error message - 'This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms'. To fix this error, you must disable FIPS in your computer's registry: Appendix E FAQ E-1

42 1. Go the following path: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\FIPSAlgorithmPolicy 2. Set Enabled = 0 Firewall blocking Vital Source Online Ensure the following URL's are whitelisted: *.vitalsource.com and *.vitalbook.com Ensure the following ports are open: 80 and 443 Remove User Name from Desktop Bookshelf If you would like to log in to the Desktop Bookshelf with a different User Name ( address), follow these steps: Windows PC Select Account in the menu bar Select Sign out You will then be able to sign in with a different user name Apple Mac Select Account in the menu bar Select Sign out You will then be able to sign in with a different user name ios Device Tap the menu icon in the top left corner Tap on Sign Out and sign back in with the alternative address Android Device Tap the menu icon in the top left corner. Tap on Sign Out and sign back in with the alternative address Unable to see my ebook If you redeemed your license code and you are unable to see your new title in your Desktop library please click on Account followed by Update Book list. If you still experience this issue please follow these instructions: Instructions for Windows 7/8 Go to the My Documents folder and locate the My Books folder. (Computer\Local Disk(C:)\Users\YourUserAccount\My Documents\My Books) Locate and rename My Books to My Books Old. Launch Vitalsource Bookshelf. Enter your evantage credentials and click Sign-In. Instructions for MAC OS X 10.6 or Later Go to the My Documents folder and locate the My Books folder. (Macintosh HD\Users\YourUserAccount\Books) Rename My Books to My Books Old. Now go to your User Accounts Preference folder and delete the com.vitalsource.bookshelf.plist preference file. (MacintoshHD\Users\YourUserAccount\Library\Preferences) Launch Vitalsource Bookshelf. Enter your evantage credentials and click Sign-In. Appendix E FAQ E-3

43 Bookshelf no longer opens There are a few different reasons why your Bookshelf application will not open. One possible reason is that your Desktop application profile is corrupted. Re-installing the application will unfortunately not fix this issue. Please follow these instructions to resolve your issue: Instructions for Windows 7 / 8 Go to the My Documents folder and locate the My Books folder. (Computer\Local Disk(C:)\Users\YourUserAccount\My Documents\My Books) Locate and rename My Books to My Books Old. Launch Vitalsource Bookshelf. Enter your evantage credentials and click Sign-In.
