1 Making a New Shape File and Quick Form in ArcPad 10.2 Culvert Shape File Example with new Quick Form By: Jon Aschenbach August 1, 2013 In this process we will: 1. Select the type of shape file we want to create. 2. Add several a ributes 3. Save the shape file 4. Say yes to making a Quick Form 5. Add controls to to the Quick Form to set minimums, maximums, and make drop down menus. 6. Save the file by tapping OK. Note: This process can be done on a PC or a laptop, or your data collector. I highly recommend the laptop/pc as you have be er control and visibility than with a small data collector screen and keyboard. ArcPad 10.2 with 2012 NAIP imagery of Columbia County, Oregon. 2 Tap on PointZ if you want eleva on data to be stored. Tap on PolylineZ or PolygonZ if you want a line or polygon with eleva- on data stored at the ver ces. If you don t select the Z version, no eleva on data will be stored. Culvert Example: Here we have selected PointZ as the type of shape file. Tap the li le black plus in the box to add your first a ribute. (same as step 5 above) You need to tap it for each a ribute that you want to add. 3 A ributes for our Culvert Shape File example: Length (numeric field 2 numbers long) Diameter (numeric field 3 number long) Material (text field 15 characters long) Condi on (text field 15 characters long) Fish Bearing (true/false check box) Date (date; automa cally entered by data collector) The Default Field name is Field1; just type over the default name. Note: A ribute names are limited to 10 characters, No Spaces are allowed anywhere, No special characters A 3 allows for diameter up to 999 inches. Maximum will be set at 160 inches later on. Allows for length up to 99 feet Note: Abbrevia on needed here due to 10 character limit. Fish refers to Fish Bearing as a true or false statement Copyright 2013 by Resource Supply, LLC Page 3

4 Here is what our a ribute list looks like. You can have lots more a ributes if you want to add more. Make sure that you select whether the a ribute is text (C for character), numeric, True/False, or Date. You cannot change that a er hi ng OK unless you make a brand new form. When everything is OK, tap OK The following screen comes up. Save the shape file wherever you want to have it placed on your PC. It will be copied to your data collector later, so don t lose it! Tap on the Save bu on to save the shape file. You must tap Yes here to create a Quick Form. Copyright 2013 by Resource Supply, LLC Page 4

5 Tap on the Controls tab to start se ng up the Quick Form Values. Note: Don t make any changes to the Layout and Fields tabs; only to the Controls tab. Fill in values as you find them appropriate for your needs. Minimums and maximums keep you from entering bad data such as 244 inches for diameter when you wanted 24. The dropdown lists are entered without spaces a er the comma. Also, tap somewhere off of the list a er typing in list data, and BEFORE you hit OK, to make sure the list saves properly. 6 ArcPad Studio is a separate program which is loaded a er ArcPad is installed. It allows users to set defaults and many other things. Using ArcPad Studio will be addressed in a separate white paper. A er the Quick Form is created, ArcPad goes to the Quick Capture screen. ArcPad picks icons at random. Note the Green square for our culvert example. To change the icon, tap on the file folder icon to bring up the main toolbar. Then... Tap on the Table Of Contents Icon. Copyright 2013 by Resource Supply, LLC Page 6

7 Double tap on the culvert shape file. When the Layer Proper es screen comes up, tap on the Symbology Tab. Tap One me on the symbol. Note: your symbol will definitely be different than mine. ArcPad picks them at random. Copyright 2013 by Resource Supply, LLC Page 7

8 The Styles tab comes up automa cally. You can make symbols bigger or smaller by percent. You can pick from a bunch of predefined shapes. (or) You can also tap on the Point Style tab and create your own style. I selected this one as a pre-defined shape under the Styles tab.. Once you select your symbol, you must tap the floppy disk icon on the next screen to save your selec on. Copyright 2013 by Resource Supply, LLC Page 8

9 Tap on the Quick Capture tool bar and select your culvert icon. When selected, it will have a brown box around it. Tapping inside the map view in ArcPad will bring up this Quick Form. Note pages 1 and 2. Tap OK to save or the Red X to Not Save. Note: When using your data collector, tapping on the culvert icon will automa cally set a point on the screen if the GPS engine is on. Note for Polylines and Polygons: You must close the polyline or polygon by tapping on the big fat green arrow (points to the right) at the bo om of the screen. Then Tap OK. The Quick Form is saved inside the por on of the shape file with the APL extension. Our culvert shape file will have SHP, SHX, DBF, APL, and PRJ extensions. When you copy the shape file to your data collector, copy all extensions of the shape file. Copyright 2013 by Resource Supply, LLC Page 9

10 Here are several culvert points added to ArcPad by tapping on the map screen. If the GPS engine was on, you would have to drive to each point and tap the Culvert icon to store data. Note that the culvert icon is in edit mode with a brown box around it. This is the a ribute data as viewed in Excel. This CSV (Comma Separated Value) file was created using a free program called MobileMapper Office version 4.5 This program also creates Google Earth KML files, and it is available from Jon Aschenbach at no charge.
