And now you re probably starting to ask questions about customizing, personalizing, changing settings, or adding your own content. Well, good news! The answers to those questions are right here in this quick and easy guide. In this guide, you ll learn how to use Programming Mode to: Create new personalized phrases and images Edit, move, and hide buttons Personalize the Tango with your own information Customize the Tango to meet the specific cognitive and motoric needs of an individual As you explore the Tango s Programming Mode, you ll quickly start feeling comfortable with our simple and intuitive interface. So don t be afraid to try things on your own. If there s something you don t understand, consult the Tango Reference Guide or call our support group at 877-BLINK-11. Now, let s start customizing!

Chapter Heading Chapter 1 Programming Principles Before you start learning the specifics about customizing your Tango, here are some general principles and tips that are important to know no matter what you re doing. Programming Principles Entering Programming Mode Enter Programming Mode by pressing POPTALK and SPELLING together, then releasing. There s no need to hold these buttons down. Check the Tango Reference Guide to find other ways to enter Programming Mode. On Location Editing When we begin editing specific buttons on the Tango, you will first navigate to the screen that contains the button you wish to edit. Then enter Programming Mode. 5 Mind Your P s and Cues. When you enter Programming Mode, the Home Button turns red. Notice that the letter P appears in the upper left-hand corner of the Message Strip. And remember to keep an eye on the Message Strip; it provides basic steps for any programming task. Navigation Navigation in Programming Mode works just like it does everywhere else on the Tango. Remember to keep an eye on the Navigation Dots in the upper right-hand area of the Message Strip. They indicate how many screens you have and which one you re on. Undo Press Undo to reverse the very last change you made. This will work as long as you do not exit Programming Mode. You can find the Undo button on the first Programming Mode screen. Screen One >

6 7 Programming Principles Types of Programming When you enter Programming Mode, you work in one of two separate programming areas: Editing Buttons: you ll find tools you need to Create, Edit, and Move buttons. Customizing Settings: (press Left or Right Arrow) you ll find user settings, utilities, and preferences. Touching vs. Holding Buttons While in Programming Mode, there are two different methods of pressing buttons: touch and press and hold. Touch: The way you normally press a button on the Tango to speak or spell. Use this to navigate through the Tango, or to select a button when you have only one screen of options. Press and Hold: A longer press lets the Tango differentiate between navigating to a button and selecting a button. A press and hold is recognized in Programming Mode and tells the Tango that you want to choose that specific button, not use it to navigate to another. Screen Two > Edit Existing Non-editable buttons The Tango is designed to be very flexible. But in order to preserve its well-thought-out organization, some buttons aren t editable and some screens can t be rearranged. Programming functions that you can t use in a specific area appear grayed out. Program Faster With Your Keyboard The Tango s six-button interface is a terrific way for individuals with complex motor patterns to increase access. But when someone with full motor access is programming, it will be faster to attach a USB keyboard to the Tango and type traditionally. When you do this, keyboard presses appear directly in the Tango s Message Strip. You can use any USB keyboard with the Tango. Simply attach the enclosed USB adapter onto the end of your keyboard s USB plug so that it can interface with our USB2GO port. Then, plug that coupled cable into the center hole under the Tango s left port cover. Spelling: With a USB keyboard attached, you can type any character on the keyboard and it will appear in the Tango. Navigation: The arrows on your keyboard work just like arrows on the Tango. When you re ready, plug in a keyboard and try it. Function Buttons: You can also use Function buttons to select buttons on the Tango. When you press F1 through F6, it s the same as pressing screen buttons one through six on the Tango.

Chapter Heading Chapter 2 How to Edit Content One of the Tango s best features is that virtually any button can be customized. Change the image for sweater by taking a photo of your own sweater. Rename the button for snack to reflect a favorite snack. It only takes a moment and the next few pages will show you exactly where to start. Is that a Phrase or a Word? Phrase buttons use real, digitized speech and you ll find them in Talk Topics and EZ Sets. Word buttons use synthesized speech. You ll find these in Lists, Core Words, and when you re using the Spelling feature. Don t want to Mom Create a Phrase Button Using a Photo Dressing Create New Take Photo The Tango has more than 2,000 phrases. And while we love their personality and motivation, they re just a starting point. Here s how to add thousands of your own. 1. Press TALK TOPICS 1. Press DRESSING. Press THINGS. 2. Enter Programming Mode. Let s add I want my favorite shoes. 3. Press CREATE NEW. You can only have 12 Phrases per Phrase Bank, so let s replace Shoes. 4. Find and select SHOES. 5. Point the camera at your shoes. (The camera is located on the front of the Tango.) Press TAKE PHOTO. 6. Then press USE THIS PHOTO. 7. Create the Audio Phrase. Press SYNTHESIZE and type I want my favorite shoes using the keyboard. For punctuation and spaces, press Edit/Lists/Save. 8. When done, press EDIT/LISTS/SAVE. Press SAVE TEXT. 9. Press NEXT STEP. Now, create your Text Readout (appears in the Message Strip when the Phrase is selected). 10. Press EDIT/LISTS/NEXT, then NEXT STEP. 11. Create a Text Label (appears on the button). Type in Favorite Shoes. 12. When done, press EDIT/LISTS/NEXT, then NEXT STEP. 13. Take Photo Exit Programming Mode. And there s your new button. 9 The Ultimate Personalization Use the camera to take photos of your own things. It s the perfect way to personalize the Tango and own your communication experience.

10 11 Create a Phrase Button Using a Symbol Bedtime Create New Supermarket As you program the Tango, you ll discover there s more than one way to do things. For example, here s a way to create a Phrase using an image that already exists on the Tango. 1. Starting from the Home Screen, press TALK TOPICS Press BEDTIME. Press THINGS. 3. To add, I want ice cream, enter Programming Mode. 4. Press CREATE NEW. 5. You can only have 12 phrases per Phrase Bank, so the Tango will ask you to choose a button to replace. For this activity, press SNACK. 6. Let s replace this button with the picture symbol for ice cream. 7. Press GET EXISTING IMAGE, then press TALK TOPICS Press RIGHT ARROW until your find Supermarket. 9. Press SUPERMARKET. 10. Press RIGHT ARROW to Supermarket Words. 11. Then press DAIRY & BREAD. Create New Voice Morph 15. If you want, choose an appropriate Voice Morph. 16. When you re done, press the NEXT STEP button and we ll create the Text Readout you ll see in the Message Strip. For punctuation and spaces, press Edit/Lists/Next. 17. When done, press EDIT/LISTS/NEXT. Then NEXT STEP. 18. Now, label your button. For this button, how about I-C-E C-R-E-A-M? 19. When done, press EDIT/LISTS/NEXT. Then NEXT STEP. 20. Your button is created! Press EXIT. The Tango has thousands of phrases you can edit to make your own. Or you can create new ones. Speaking entire phrases is great for natural conversation, but it s even better when they reflect exactly who you are. Instead of asking for a snack, ask for ice cream. Instead of asking for a blanket ask for your favorite quilt. Ice Cream Record 12. Press and hold ICE CREAM. 13. Now, create an Audio Phrase by recording your voice or using synthesized speech. 14. Let s record, I want some ice cream. Press RECORD and speak 3 to 4 inches from the built-in microphone (two small holes near the ABC PopUp button). When you re done, press STOP. A Cool Typing Tip Whenever there s a lot of typing to be done, consider plugging a USB keyboard into the Tango.

Create a Word Button by Taking a Photo Edit a Word Button There are thousands of words in the Tango. You ll find them in Talk Topics, Word Banks, and Lists. But you can add thousands more, like your own family members, movies, video games anything at all! Editing buttons makes the Tango s content more personal and, often, more motivating. (This is your first time in this list, so you ll only see empty buttons.) 6. Get out a few of your favorite DVDs. (This may be a good time to plug in a keyboard since you may be doing a lot of typing!) Arts and Crafts Edit Existing 3. Press ARTS AND CRAFTS, then press RIGHT ARROW choose the ART SUPPLIES List. 4. Press RIGHT ARROW until you see the word Pen. 5. Enter Programming Mode. 6. Press EDIT EXISTING. 7. Select PEN. 8. Press CHANGE IMAGE. Create New 7. Enter Programming Mode. 8. Press CREATE NEW. 9. You can press the RIGHT ARROW to change the word type from a noun to a verb, adjective, or other. But leave it as a noun Since it s a word in a List, you re prompted to choose the word type. Select NOUN. Instead of exiting Programming Mode, create a few more buttons for more DVDs to start your collection. When you re done, press EXIT. 12. Select SAVE ALL. Dress Up Your Sets It s often fun to fully customize a set to truly make it your own. For example, go to Dressing and take photos of all your own clothes! Don t forget to put favorites under Favorite Words.

Move a Button Hide a Button Hiding and moving buttons are great ways to tailor the Tango to your needs or preferences. Let s move a button in the Mealtime Talk Topic to make a favorite food easier to access. Press HAMBURGER. Now, your button is moved and fish sticks becomes your second button, pushing all the other buttons back one space. 11. Exit Programming Mode and you re done! Hide and Seek For individuals who are just learning the Tango, it can be helpful to hide 3 of the 6 screen buttons on every screen. There s less to look at and more directed support. Then, as the individual s ability increases, start unhiding buttons one at a time. Always make sure you keep your favorites! Also, check out the Home Screen Layouts option in Programming Mode s User Preferences

Copy a Complete Talk Topic Copy a Phrase Button You can also copy a complete Talk Topic. Let s copy the Mealtime Talk Topic into Talk Topics 4 (My Topics), and customize it for your favorite restaurant. You can also copy a Phrase button from one set to another. Or copy an image from Lists to use on any Phrase button. As with any edit, start where you want to make the change. In this case, you are copying to Talk Topics 4. So let s start there. Press COPY MENU. 6. Press COPY TO HERE. Since you can only have up to 12 phrases, the Tango will ask you which Morning Phrase to overwrite. 7. Let s choose THAT ONE. The Tango now takes you back to the Home Screen. 8. Now, we ll find the button we want to copy to here. Press TALK TOPICS 1, then MEALTIME, then THUMBS UP. 9. Press and hold STARVING. In a moment, the button is copied to Morning. Even Faster Customization Check out Tango Lab, our amazingly intuitive software for creating and editing content in seconds. 10 18 Chapter Heading Customize Settings and Preferences 19 Chapter 3 Customize Settings and Preferences Tango settings and preferences are relatively self-explanatory, but understanding their power can mean the difference between an okay experience and a great one. User Preferences User Preferences These settings help you set up the Tango s basic operations to meet the cognitive and physical abilities for a broad range of individuals. Try each one and see how they work for you, or the person you re working with. Size of Home Screen This determines how many Home Screen functions you will have access to. Choosing a more limited setting can help focus an individual by narrowing their choices and preventing errors. For more advanced users, try all three screens. (This is the default setting.) To find all these preferences and settings, enter Programming Mode and press Right Arrow. If you re not sure what a setting does, it s easy to find out: just check out the Message Strip and you ll see a short description. All settings are not covered here. For additional information, refer to the Tango Reference Guide. My Tango is customized just for me. My Tango is exactly the way I like it. Home Screen Layouts This setting arranges the Home Screen functions for an individual s anticipated needs. For example: Beginning places simpler, more straightforward buttons (like EZ Sets 1) on the first Home Screen. Independent places more advanced options that require multiple hits (like Tango Link) on the first Home Screen. Up/Down Transition Speed Choose how fast the Tango scrolls up and down, from Really Slow to Really Fast. Or choose No Transition. Length of Hold Options Change the duration for which a button must be held down before it is activated, confirming its selection. Changing the length of hold can greatly reduce accidental presses. Additional Button Function determines the hold time for a button s secondary option. (See Press and Hold on page 6)

20 21 Customize Settings and Preferences Button Lights and Functions The Tango s buttons give visual cues as to which navigation options are available but sometimes these can be distracting and are better if switched off. Button Lights On/Off allows you to turn off lights for the Tango s Arrow Buttons, PopTalk PopUp, Spelling PopUp, Voice PopUp, and Home Button. PopUp Buttons and Arrow Buttons Active: Let s you choose which of the PopUp and Arrow Buttons you want to disable. Simply press the option (for example: PopTalk Active) and the box will uncheck, making it unavailable. Alternate Synthesized Voice Here you can change the speed and pitch of the Tango s synthesized voice. Make it fast and high, low and slow, or other combinations. Note: In order for these changes to take affect you will need to restart your Tango. To do this, hold down the power button for five seconds. Here, you can choose to turn this off. Doing so allows individuals to spend more time in specific areas and is great for exploring the Tango s deep language structure. Auto-Close PopTalk When you speak a phrase in PopTalk, it closes automatically. This is similar to the Scroll Back function, except PopTalk closes completely. If you don t want PopTalk to close, choose to turn off the Auto-Close. This can be helpful if PopTalk is used frequently. Message Bar Speaks When Hit Choose whether or not pressing the Message Strip speaks its contents. So, when you press the Message Strip, the Tango speaks the words in it, but they aren t cleared. This is a great support for learning and literacy. Choice of Phrase Bank Symbol Here, you can choose to make the symbols in Phrase Banks more visually distinct. Choose Option B for larger and more obvious choices. Toggle Preferences Toggle Preferences These On/Off settings allow individuals to optimize settings for their particular needs. Sound Options For some, the Tango s sound effects can be fantastic auditory cues for others, they can be distracting. In this section, there are a few different sound options that you can tailor to fit the needs of whoever is using the Tango. Sound Effects are the clicks and tones you hear when you re navigating the Tango. Scroll Backs Scrolling back happens after you speak a phrase on the Tango. After a phrase is spoken, the Tango scrolls you back to the previous screen. Stop Audio Playback provides options for stopping the phrase being spoken.

22 23 Customize Settings and Preferences Core and Keyboards Core and Keyboards The settings in this area allow you to change Core Word and Keyboard options, including how many Core Words you re working with, what they will look like, and the keyboard layout. Core Word Options The Tango offers a variety of options for its Core Words. When you change the Core Word options, make sure to exit Programming Mode and press the Home button. Re-enter Core Words to see your changes. Standard Core uses 90 words and is the default setting for Tango for Kids and Teens. It s used mostly for those individuals who are just learning literacy skills. Here you can modify many of the visual cues used (such as images, text, and color cues). Power Core uses 720 words and is the default setting for Tango for Adults. Power Core is especially helpful for those individuals who already have a literacy foundation and can handle multiple words at once. Power Core Phrase First: This gives you a up to six popular phrase combinations associated with the selected Core Word. For example, if you choose the word have you ll get combinations like, I have the, and Do you have. Keyboard Options In many cases the person using the Tango will be different from the one Programming it. Here, you can choose a different keyboard layout for the User Keyboard and the Program Keyboard. There are layouts optimized for all kinds of users: from direct selectors to scanners to folks who just prefer a standard QWERTY keyboard. Word Prediction Word Prediction is a powerful tool to minimize typing time. For some users, it may be a distraction. Here you can turn Word Prediction Off. Word Morphing Word Morphs allow you to conjugate verbs, create noun plurals, and do adjective comparisons simply by holding down a button for an extended time. This setting lets you turn the Tango s Word Morph function On or Off. Speak Words When Sentence Building The Tango s individual words can be combined to form unique sentences. But some users may prefer to speak individual words and not create sentences. This setting lets you choose whether or not you want single words to stay in the Message Strip. Words Speak: After each word is selected, the Tango speaks the word and removes it from the Message Strip. Words Build Sentences: After chosen, a word stays in the Message Strip until you choose to speak it. Words Speak and Build: The Tango speaks each word as it s chosen AND it stays in the Message Strip in order to build a sentence.

24 25 Customize Settings and Preferences Scanning Preferences Scanning Preferences The Tango knows what you want. If a single switch is plugged in, the Tango starts One Switch scanning. If you plug in a second switch, it begins Two Switch scanning. It s just that simple. The Tango has a variety of powerful scanning patterns, switch modes, speeds, delay times and other options, including auditory scanning. For more control, you can set exact preferences for all of these scanning variables. In this section, we just cover a few of options. Check the Tango Reference Guide for more details on scanning options. Pattern Options Scanning Pattern: This lets you determine which buttons are scanned. You may want to limit early communicators to only scan the six Screen Buttons. Or, to only scan the Outer Buttons. Of course, you can also choose your own custom Scanning Pattern. Scanning Speed: Tells the Tango how quickly to scan. Beginning users or users with complex motor patterns might need quite a few seconds. While some people can scan very quickly. Highlight Options: Here, you have six different color options for highlighting the buttons when they re scanned, allowing for better visual access. One Switch Mode Options User Start: Scanning starts when the user presses the attached switch. Step and Delay: Each time you press the switch, the Tango will step (move the highlight). When you land on the desired button and do not press the switch, the Tango will activate that button. Step, Hold with Delay: This is the same as above, except a user may also hold down the switch to continue stepping. Two Switch Mode Options Step: Each time you press switch one, the Tango will step (move the highlight) to the next button in your selected pattern. Switch two will activate whichever button is highlighted. Step and Hold: This is similar to above, except a user may also hold down switch one to continue stepping. Audio Scanning This is where you ll find all the auditory scanning options. You re able to adjust the audio prompts and decide on an option for buttons that are unavailable. Number of Cycles: Choose how many times the Tango will cycle through the selected scanning pattern. The default setting is three. Delay Time: This setting determines the length of delay in Step and Delay and Step, Hold, and Delay.
